Another great place to shop for Olympia Dukakis products is Amazon. They have more than just books! Tully High School seniors Richie, Joey and Perry run with a gang called the Wanderers in the Bronx. The time is fall 1963 but their experiences are universal: falling in love, surviving in school and defending turf against rivals like the Fordham Baldies, the Del Bombers and the Ducky Boys. A strong cast, impressive production values, and astute direction distinguish this generally successful dramatization of the tumultuous life of the 15th-century French heroine whose military victories were eclipsed by her martyrdom. At the heart of the story is the conflict between the teenager's simple but fierce faith and the more complex political and theological issues that influence her downfall, a theme fleshed out through the portrayals of the young warrior's liege, the Dauphin (later King) Charles, and the Bishop Cauchon. The 140-minute feature follows Joan D'Arc's odyssey from peasant obscurity to notoriety as the "Maid of Orleans," spiritual fulcrum for the beleaguered French forces struggling to halt English invaders. As played by Leelee Sobieski (Eyes Wide Shut), her evolution from naive farm girl to seasoned soldier is convincing, as is her gradual awakening to the underlying agendas of church and state. Most critically, Sobieski radiates the young girl's fervent spiritual devotion. Framing Sobieski's focal performance are two equally fine turns from Neil Patrick Harris, who erases his legacy as TV's Doogie Howser, M.D. with a neatly shaded, steely Charles, and Peter O'Toole, who balances his signature reserve and present physical frailty to make Cauchon a moral compass for the story. Having opposed Joan as a threat to orthodoxy, the Bishop recognizes her purity too late; O'Toole turns this moment into a dreadful epiphany that resonates through the story's inevitable, fiery denouement. Fine supporting performances from Peter Strauss, Shirley MacLaine, and Maximillian Schell, plus evocative medieval locations in the Czech Republic, further buttress the story. French-Canadian director Christian Duguay handles the large-scale battle sequences with fluid blocking and smart camera work. --Sam Sutherland The writer-producer-director team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride) can't lift this sugary ode to Howard Hawks's His Girl Friday to a believable--let alone enjoyable--plateau. Neither, unfortunately, can its two great and perfectly cast leads, Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts. As competing newspaper reporters after the same story, there should be enough sparks and brilliantly barbed dialogue flying between them to resurrect the screwball comedy genre of classic Hollywood. But the material isn't there, the charisma isn't there, and the direction (by Shyer) certainly isn't there. At more than two hours, the film begins to dismantle itself, and the cute factor becomes a pain. --Tom Keogh A young Brooklyn widow goes to meet her fiance's brother to invite him to her wedding, but falls in love with him instead.Genre: Feature Film-ComedyRating: PGRelease Date: 13-NOV-2001Media Type: DVD Remember the outfit Cher wore to the Oscars when she won an Academy Award for her performance in this 1987 film? Ay-yi-yi. The actress' more retiring character in this infectious comedy leaps several psychological hurdles just giving her hair a permanent. But then the original screenplay by John Patrick Shanley (Joe Versus the Volcano) is a wonderful, gently satirical tale of an Italian-American family dealing with repression and dissatisfaction against a backdrop of cultural expectations. Cher is focused and funny as a widow who feels she should marry an older fellow (Danny Aiello), but then falls for his black-sheep brother (Nicolas Cage). Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia are perfect as her parents, and John Mahoney (of TV's Frasier) has a memorable, small role as a middle-aged man on the make who gets a lecture from Dukakis's character. Shanley's dialogue is comically stylized in a way that makes one appreciate how much words can inform an actor's performance. Taking its cues from him and director Norman Jewison (And Justice for All), the cast immerse themselves in a pool of hilariously operatic emotion. --Tom Keogh MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS - DVD Movie An earnest and at times overblown story of a music teacher's impact on those around him, Mr. Holland's Opus is at times a genuinely touching drama in the vein of It's a Wonderful Life. Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) plays an aspiring composer and musician who takes a job teaching music at a local high school to save money while he composes his music. But when his wife (Glenne Headley) becomes pregnant, Glenn Holland must put aside his dreams and address the everyday realities of his life, from the melancholy and sometimes tragic fates of his students to the discovery that the son he cherishes is deaf. Building to a highly emotional climax in which the teacher sees the impact he's had on the world around him, Mr. Holland's Opus is a showcase for a fine Oscar-nominated performance by Dreyfuss and an engaging, heartwarming story. --Robert Lane Based on Robert Harling's play, this comedy-drama directed by Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) follows several years in the lives of women who regularly see one another at a beauty shop in their small Louisiana town. The story deepens as Julia Roberts, playing a serious diabetic and the daughter of Sally Field, goes downhill in her health. But as an ensemble piece, this is one of those enjoyably lumpy tearjerkers with many years' worth of stored truths suddenly being shared between the characters, lots of grievances aired, that sort of thing. Daryl Hannah and Shirley MacLaine assume the most eccentric roles, Dolly Parton the most fun, and Olympia Dukakis the most dignified, while Sally Field essentially provides the moral and emotional center of the movie. --Tom Keogh In the South, a diabetic girl decides to risk having a baby and is supported by her mother and four loyal friends.Genre: Feature Film-DramaRating: PGRelease Date: 3-JAN-2006Media Type: DVD Signed 8x10 B&W by Ethan Hawke and Olympia Dukakis comes with powers collectibles coa and matching holograms This item comes with a certificate of authenticity from Hollywood Collectibles. Mother Courage and Her Children is a classic in the repertory of Western theater. Way More Than the Grand Canyon
Everybody knows that when you visit the southwest, you are supposed to visit the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is the quintessential family vacation destination—no matter where in America you live. Of course, there is a lot more to do in Arizona than ride donkeys down to the Colorado River!
Look, we aren't knocking the Grand Canyon—it certainly is grand and it is something that everyone should see at least once. But Arizona has so much more to do and see.
Today the Arizona Micro Blog is going to be talking about Sedona. Sedona is, arguably, one of the most beautiful desert oases in the world. Smack dab in the Arizona desert, Sedona offers a cooler climate, lush greenery and all of the painted desert scenery a person could want.
Most people know Sedona as "one of those hippie artsy towns" and, to be sure, there are quite a few artist studios and metaphysical tourist shops here. If you wanted to find a place to get balanced, learn how to heal yourself with crystals and get in touch with your inner spirit guide, Sedona Arizona is certainly the place to do all of that. But there is a lot more to Sedona than the hippie artsy stuff. Here are a few of the other things Sedona Arizona has to offer:
Slide Rock State Park
This one of Arizona's most famous state parks. The park features a natural rock slide that has become one of the world's most beloved natural water slides. This park is so popular that nature conservationists worry about it being loved right out of existence by too much foot traffic. To be sure, the US Forest Service and the Arizona State Parks Department work tirelessly to make sure that the park stays clean and "user friendly."
The Sedona International Film Festival
In 2009 the Sedona International Film Festival will last for six days, from Tuesday February 24, to March 1. The Sedona International Film Festival is when film buffs from all over the globe flock to Arizona to teach and share their art with others. This is no "up and coming" festival either—big names like Olympia Dukakis, Robert Osborne, and Helen Hunt have attended this festival!
Out of Africa Wildlife Park
The most popular attraction at this famous Arizona wildlife park is Tiger Splash, a show in which full grown tigers play in a pool with their handlers—they pounce on balls, play with toys and play in and out of the water. Make no mistake these tigers have all of their claws and teeth, but because they are treated well by their handlers and have a close relationship with them, there aren't many accidents. You don't have to worry about having a repeat of Siegfried and Roy here! This show is very popular with young kids who often spend the rest of the day re-enacting the show!
Arizona is certainly famous for its national parks and stark desert landscape, but the state is home to hidden gems (like Sedona as well). There's plenty to do off the beaten path, you just have to take some time to explore!
