"Sister Morphine," the heart of guitarist Mick Taylor's first full studio album with the Stones, doesn't get the airplay of "Brown Sugar" or "Wild Horses." But it's one of the most vivid, horrifying songs about drug abuse ever recorded--as Mick Jagger sings "from my hospital bed," the ringing guitars of Taylor and Keith Richards build to full catharsis behind him. On that and lighter songs like the countryish "Dead Flowers" and the rocker "Bitch," Charlie Watts establishes himself as rock's prototypical drummer. He's creative and propulsive and knows how to swing, but he never overwhelms the song or the other Stones. --Steve Knopper
Only a peak-of-their-powers Stones could manage to overshadow one of their very greatest albums by surrounding it in their studio chronology with Let It Bleed and Exile on Main St.. Sticky Fingers, however, is anything but an also-ran. Offering some of the band's most inspired twists on their basic approach--"Sway," the midtempo rocker that would sound orchestral even without Paul Buckmaster's climactic string arrangement; the gorgeous closer "Moonlight Mile"--this also rocks like the demon they had lived to face another day after Altamont. And, as if to prove their minds were still as dirty as their music, its keynote is "Brown Sugar." --Rickey Wright
The Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers
Digitally remastered edition of the Rock 'N' Roll veterans' 1971 album, originally the first album for their own Rolling Stones Records imprint. Though the album was pieced together from various sessions, it remains one of their most iconic albums. 10 tracks including 'Brown Sugar', 'Bitch' and 'Wild Horses'.

Human After All

You'd never guess from Human After All that these are the same guys who came up with the opulent dance grooves of 2001's Discovery. On Human After All it sounds like Daft Punk's robotic alter egos have finally gotten the upper hand and made an album that is defiantly free of emotion and personality. Instead, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo amp up the irony and deliver a set of songs that are maddeningly repetitive, raucous and bound to test the most devoted fan's patience. But even as the French duo short-circuits it manages to captivate--the spoken-word "Technologic" and the digitized "The Prime Of Your Life" are just bananas enough to make its euphoric hit "One More Time" sound positively last century. --Aidin Vaziri

Spiceworld

"Spice up your life," the Spice Girls advise on the first single from Spiceworld, their second album, which was made quickly to capitalize on the movie of the same name. If that sounds more like an advertising slogan than a call for variety, solidarity, and fun, it's not the only time the disc echoes the language of a carefully planned campaign: The chorus of "Move Over" is built around the phrase "Generation Next," the rallying cry of the Brits' Pepsi spot. And if, in turn, you come to the conclusion that this record isn't nearly as much fun as its predecessor, you're right. Any question about the creative input of Scary, Posh, Baby, Ginger, and Sporty into their own music is moot; like "Candle in the Wind 1997," Spiceworld was made to be bought, not listened to. Sure, they trade vocals this time, leaning less on the Bananarama-style gang approach of their debut, and yeah, the Motown-lite confection "Stop" doesn't exactly hurt the ear, but this disc is ultimately a bigger insult than anything a bunch of diehard anarchists such as Chumbawamba could imagine--without the kick of "Tubthumping." It also ends on a note so jarring as to settle the group firmly in the avant-garde with the fake-lounge "Lady Is a Vamp," which unfortunately praises Jackie O and Marilyn Monroe in the same verse, then ups the ante with a shout-out to Sandy Denny(!) as a Spicy role model. All together now: Uh huh. --Rickey Wright

There should be a law that requires every child to sit on Grandpa's knee as he chants "Trot, trot, to Boston; trot, trot, to Lynn." Grownups who still giggle at the thought of Little Jack Horner pulling a plum out of his Christmas pie, or who make a wish on a star, murmuring "Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight" know the secret. They're the ones who will be handing down those same nursery rhymes to their own children, preserving an age-old tradition. But no child should be left behind. In world folklore authority Iona Opie's collection, these invaluable and ancient nuggets of childhood verse are bursting with new life. Quirky and sly, sweet, gentle, rollicking, silly... the range of rhymes is breathtaking. Winner of over a dozen prestigious awards, including a Parents' Choice Award and an ALA Notable Children's Book award, this wonderful book is charmingly illustrated by Rosemary Wells, best known for her Max books (Max's Bath, Max's Bedtime, Max's Ride). A solid repertoire of nursery rhymes should be de rigueur for any aunt, uncle, grandparent, or parent worth his or her salt. This book is a must, as is its companion volume, Here Comes Mother Goose. (Click to see a sample spread from My Very First Mother Goose. Illustrations & copy; 1996 by Rosemary Wells. Permission from Candlewick Press.) (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter
To a small child, words are magical. And the most magical of all are the beloved, venerable words of Mother Goose. Now folklorist Iona Opie has gathered more than sixty treasured rhymes in their most perfect, honest form. From "Hey Diddle, Diddle" and "Pat-a-Cake" to "Little Jack Horner" and "Pussycat, Pussycat," these are familiar verses that have been passed from parent to child for generations; these are the rhymes that are every child's birthright. With watercolors by Rosemary Wells that may prove equally enduring, MY VERY FIRST MOTHER GOOSE captures the simple joy and the sly humor that are the essence of Mother Goose. Parents and children will find themselves exploring this volume together, savoring delightful details and funny surprises on every page. This is a book that promises hours of quiet smiles and merry grins for readers of all ages.

The Random House Book of Poetry for Children
List Price: $22.99
Sale Price: $11.60
|
|
|
The Random House Book of Poetry for Children was recognized upon its publication in 1983 as an invaluable collection--a modern classic--and it has not since been surpassed. Five hundred poems, selected by poet and anthologist Jack Prelutsky, are divided into broad subject areas such as nature, seasons, living things, children, and home. The poems of Emily Dickinson, Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, and Gwendolyn Brooks populate the book's pages, while Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Ogden Nash, and Shel Silverstein ensure that the collection delights even the most reluctant readers of rhyme. Playground chants, anonymous rhymes, scary poems, silly verse, and even some sad strains are carefully indexed by title, author, first line, and subject. With illustrations of cheerful, round-faced children and animals on every page, Arnold Lobel (a Caldecott medalist and creator of the Frog and Toad series) unifies the diverse poems to form a satisfying whole; Lobel can draw anything and make it funny--or poignant, if he chooses. This collection, one of the most varied and complete around, will carry any budding poetry lover through childhood and beyond. (Ages 5 to 11.)
"A generous collection with a distinctly upbeat tone, this gives a taste of the best poets writing for children over the last several decades. Lobel's drawings imbue the whole with action and graphic images as inventive as the verse. Successfully geared to meet home, school, and library needs."--(starred) Booklist.

The 20th Century Children's Poetry Treasury (Treasured Gifts for the Holidays)

"I objurgate the centipede,/ A bug we do not really need," writes Ogden Nash. Carl Sandburg hums and strums, while pages later, William Jay Smith compares a toaster to a silver-scaled dragon. And of course A.A. Milne must add his two cents' worth, "tiddely pom, tiddely pom." What a labor of love! Children's poet and anthologist Jack Prelutsky has collected 211 of his favorite poems by 137 poets, representing the best of verse from each decade of the 20th century. "Until this century, most children's poetry was either syrupy sweet or overblown and didactic, and tended to talk down to its readers," Prelutsky writes in his introduction. "Contemporary children's poets have thrown all that condescension and moralizing out the window, and write with today's real child in mind." What's in this anthology for today's child? Food fights, outer space, animals, noses, monsters, sports, and sibling rivalry. Each of award-winning illustrator Meilo So's spectacular watercolor-splashed spreads reflects a theme: one buggy watercolor romp is surrounded by Deborah Chandra's "Cricket," Walter R. Brooks's "Ants, Although Admirable, Are Awfully Aggravating," and Robert Frost's "Blue-Butterfly Day." Five nocturnal poems nestle into a moonlit cityscape. Four music-related poems, from Bruce Lansky's "My Violin" to X.J. Kennedy's "The Girl Who Makes the Cymbals Bang," burst from So's cacophonous paintings. This excellent collection, a companion to The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury, belongs on every poetry lover's bookshelf. Prelutsky, creator of The New Kid on the Block, The Dragons Are Singing Tonight, and more than 30 other poetry books, has perfect pitch. (Click to see a sample spread. Illustrations copyright 1999 by Meilo So. Permission of Alfred A. Knopf.) (All ages) --Karin Snelson

Canine Distemper
Canine distemper is a contagious, incurable, often fatal, multi-systemic viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems. It is caused by the canine distemper virus (CDV - a paramyxovirus similar to that which causes human measles.) The canine distemper virus is transmitted through the air, when infected animals cough, as well through bodily fluids such as urine. Puppies/dogs diagnosed with or suspected of having canine distemper should be quarantined immediately. While dogs of any age can be affected by CDV, most are puppies, between 3-6 months old. The key to preventing CDV is early vaccination, so talk to your veterinarian when you take your puppy for his/her first check-up.
The distemper virus can affect many systems of the body and common signs include:
- nasal and eye discharge;
- coughing;
- diarrhea/vomiting;
- fever that may come and go;
- seizures
Often, mildly-affected dogs may only cough, thus being misdiagnosed as having "kennel cough." Others may develop pneumonia. Puppies that recover experience severe tooth enamel damage. Also, the nose and foot pads of a young dog may become thickened (also known as "hardpad disease.")
CDV is deadly serious, and can spread rapidly through a kennel, especially if unvaccinated animals are present. Although not all infected dogs die, a significant number may. While dogs of any age are susceptible, the very young and old have the highest death rate. Dogs that recover from distemper may suffer permanent damage to vision as well as the nervous system.
As your veterinarian can explain to you, there are several methods he/she can use to diagnose distemper in dogs/puppies, including:
- Polymerase chain reaction test (lab test) can be performed on samples of urine, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, blood, and post mortem tissues;
- Skin biopsies (including dog’s pads), can be examined for the presence of the canine distemper virus;
- Depending upon the severity and time of infection, blood examined microscopically may show characteristic changes called "canine distemper inclusion bodies";
With some diagnostic tests (i.e. antibody tests), it is difficult to distinguish between infection and the changes normally seen with the canine distemper vaccination.
While there is currently no specific treatment for canine distemper, intravenous fluids are administered to prevent dehydration, and anti-seizure medications can be used if neurologic signs develop.
The good news is that excellent vaccines, with minimal side effects, have been developed and used for years, making significant strides in reducing the frequency of CDV. These vaccinations should be boostered for the life of the dog.

I want to visit my old high school,they wont let me.What are some actions I can take if they kick me out?
I' am a sophomore and transferred out of my high school and now I have a day off and I want to visit the school. I called down there and they said that I couldn't. Well I'm going--fuck the administrators. I want solid reasons of why they cant kick me out and some "proof"--anything will help! CDV's or something,please help meeeeeee
Let me rephrase--I cant stand the school administrators.I want to go,even if they say I cant.If they try to kick me out I want something to Come Back with,I left the school to attend a better school,not cause I got kicked out.I just want to come back with something that will let me stay at the school for the day.I want solid reasons THEY CANT kick me out.
You don't go to school there, they have rules against unauthorized people coming to the school, you are unauthorized.
If they find you there, they can and should have you arrested for trespassing, especially if you are going to make a scene.
The law is on their side, not yours.
