The winner of 1934's Best Picture Oscar proves that the Academy hasn't changed its tune much in 50-plus years. Though films of that year, such as King Kong, still remain in the public psyche, Cavalcade, which is rarely seen now, fits the Academy's bill as an "important" film, one worthy of the Best Picture title. It chronicles the life of two British families, from the eve of the 20th century to 1933. One family is upstairs, the other downstairs, but it's less a view of the class struggle than a remembrance of things past. People honeymoon on the Titanic, they fight in the War to End All Wars, and they seem to entirely avoid the 1920s. Based upon Noel Coward's play, young couples banter using frightfully high-tea terms--everyone's "dreadful," "horrid," or "pathetic." A final montage tirade about the decrepit state of the times (hey, they did it back then, too!) almost knocks the legs out from under the whole proceedings, but it holds on. Stiff upper lip and all that. --Keith Simanton

This Mike Todd production was a star-studded, multi-million dollar extravaganza when first released in 1956. It remains enjoyable family fare, but time has somewhat dulled its shine. Still, it compares favorably to the overly long, TV mini-series starring Pierce Brosnan and Eric Idle. Elegant David Niven plays the neurotically punctual Phileas Fogg, a British gent who is spurned on by a wager to prove he can travel around the world in 80 days. He is accompanied by his valet, played with persnickety humor by Cantinflas. Nominated for several Academy Awards, this was written by John Farrow (Mia's dad) and S.J. Perelman, based on Jules Verne's 1873 classic. The fun part is the razzle-dazzle. Todd knew what he was doing with all those exotic locales and over 40 cameo appearances, including Charles Boyer, Ronald Colman, Marlene Dietrich, José Greco, Peter Lorre, Buster Keaton, Frank Sinatra, and Red Skelton. A very young Shirley MacLaine was painted and dyed to play a lively Indian Princess. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Stylish heist yarn, which spawned a loose 2003 remake, stars Michael Caine as the leader of a group of thieves who disguise themselves as football fans to rip off a cache of gold in Turin, Italy. Featuring Noel Coward as the plot's imprisoned mastermind, Raf Vallone, and Benny Hill, the film is filled with outrageous Mini Cooper car chases, wild stunts, and one of the oddest endings in movie history. 99 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; deleted scene; "making of" documentaries; theatrical trailers.
This little-known cult caper is about as depraved as they come. Michael Caine, ever the enterprising swinger and swindler, has an ingenious plan to steal a huge cache of Chinese gold to be shipped to Turin as collateral for a new Fiat plant. Since the Italy-Great Britain soccer match is being played at the same time, Caine wants to create a diversion in the form of a monumental traffic jam. For financing, he turns to Noel Coward, who directs British criminal enterprises from his jail cell. A motley crew is assembled, including Benny Hill as a computer expert with a fetish for large-breasted women. It's all a nasty and fun parody, with the most memorable robbery-chase sequence in the history of the caper genre. --Bill Desowitz

Very Good Condition - Tracking Number - Ships from Ohio
A lighthearted adaptation of a Noel Coward play set in the late 1920s, Easy Virtue stars Jessica Biel as Larita, an adventurous American who marries John, the naive, British heir (Ben Barnes) to a crumbling family estate. Whisked into the less-than-receptive bosom of John's kin, Larita soon finds herself drawing the scorn of her mother-in-law (Kristin Scott Thomas), who would have preferred John marry a longtime sweetheart from his own genteel community rather than a brash Yankee. Eager to move to London, Larita knows the longer a post-honeymoon John visits his family the harder it will be for the newlyweds to live on their own terms, and she's right. Giving up on any notion of fitting in, Larita suffers a few embarrassments before fighting back. But nothing can help her once a past scandal encroaches on her dream of happiness. Co-writer and director Stephan Elliott (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) keeps everything breezy and fun, though the clashes between Larita and her malicious mother-in-law are keenly felt. Elliott's period sensibility is very strong, not least of all his appreciation of John's father (Colin Firth), a restless intellectual and member of the so-called Lost Generation of World War I veterans. Firth's performance as a man distanced from his family's preoccupations and material woes is a real highlight of Easy Virtue. When he dances a tango, late in the story, one can see years of repressed desire erupt in him. --Tom Keogh Stills from Easy Virtue (Click for larger image)

Four of director David Lean's adaptations of writer Noel Coward's plays are collected in this set. First, Lean's debut solo directorial effort, "This Happy Breed" (1944) is a fine, understated drama that looks at a typical, working-class British household and how it's affected by the events of the years between World Wars I and II. Robert Newton, Celia Johnson, John Mills, and Kay Walsh star. Then, Coward adapted his own witty stage farce for this (literally) spirited screen version of "Blithe Spirit" (1945). Rex Harrison is a writer whose research into the occult leads him to muddled medium Margaret Rutherford, who accidentally conjures up the ghost of Harrison's first wife. Kay Hammond co-stars as the trouble-making spectre. Four-disc set also includes the Criterion Collection versions of "In Which We Serve" and "Brief Encounter" (1945). 6 3/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English PCM mono; "making of" featurettes; audio commentary; interviews; bonus TV episode; documentary "David Lean: A Self Portrait" (1971); theatrical trailers; booklet.

What Did One Really Mean - On The Dating Scene?
The little girl had the makings of a poet in her when, being told to be sure of her meaning before she spoke, said: “How can I know what I think till I see what I say?” Graham Wallas - The Art of Thought
We all know the meanings to common remarks:
Correct me if I’m wrong - Don’t argue with me.
I don’t mind criticism but - Mind your own business.
This has been a team effort-You bludgers all know I did it myself.
I’d be grateful if - Do it or else.
I know it’s none of my business but - I am making it my business.
There are many remarks that are unique within the environment of the singles scene. I am sure readers could contribute some of their own. One day there will have enough to fill a book. Here are a few from the list we have compiled at Entre Nous Introductiom Agency so far:
I don’t want to interfere but - I am going to interfere and relish the thought.
Who’s going? - If the company is interesting I may put in an appearance.
Pressure of business - I found something more interesting.
Got held up - Delayed arriving in case it was boring.
I’ll be there on the dot - You may as well start without me as I’m always late.
Back in an hour - Back about the same time I usually return from a good lunch.
Don’t ask me - I’m not to blame.
I won’t be drinking tonight - At least for the first hour.
We waited for you - We forgot you were coming it’s lucky you didn’t turn up.
Trust me - I wouldn’t trust me but you might be foolish enough to.
You have my word - Thank goodness I have a short memory.
You’ve got so much going for you - You’re a loser.
You’re highly intelligent – You’re a dumb jerk
Did I do something wrong? – I really stuffed that one up.
If I were you – There’s only one way and that’s mine.
I’d like to think it over – No!
I am not really looking for a relationship – I am, but not with you
We had lots in common but there were no sparks – She couldn’t stand the sight of me
We agreed to be just friends – He couldn’t stand the sight of me
I have to work back and my mother’s arriving home from overseas – I’ve had a better offer
I’ll let you know – No thanks
I’ll confirm it on the day – If nothing better crops up
It’s that time of the month – No!
You’re a lovely man but – I don’t think you’re lovely at all
My old boyfriend has Come Back into my life – Don’t bother me anymore
(No wonder PG Wodehouse wrote: “There are men who fear repartee in a women more keenly than a sword”)
What are we going to do about the bill? – You’re not worth paying for
I’m not hungry, I’ll just have a bowl of pasta, you order what you like – If you dared to order more than a bowl of pasta you are a gold digger.
I’m just having the main course – I’m paying the bill so I decide what we eat.
What would you prefer to drink, red or white? - I prefer red.
No, I won’t have a dessert, I’ll share yours – I didn’t really want to pay for desserts.
She has a well balanced personality – She has a chip on each shoulder.
Although some of these sayings may seem witty, it was Noel Coward who said: “wit ought to be a glorious treat, like caviar never spread it around like marmalade”.
Rosalind Baker is the principal of ENTRE NOUS (Introduction Service) and author of Dial A Woman, Dial a Man and Dial A personality: www.singles.net.au
About the Author
Rosalind Baker's professional commitment to 'match making' is well into its second decade, although she has always possessed that innate ability to pair people off. She even introduced her ex-husband to his next wife!
Having established Entre Nous: Relationship Consultants & Educators in 1991 she has now lost count of the number of relationships the organisation has helped to establish.
While there have been many 'fly-by-night' introduction agencies over the past two decades in Melbourne, Entre Nous has stood the test of time. This is due, in no small part, to the professionalism and passion of Rosalind Baker.
She has written three best sellers. The first, 'Dial A Woman' offers advice to Australian men on how to choose the right partner and then maintain a successful relationship.
The obvious sequel, 'Dial A Man' advised women on how to recognise and attract the man of their dreams. While writing her third book, 'Dial a Personality', she realised she had discovered the successful formula for matching couples.
As a journalist Rosalind has written extensively on social affairs and women's issues and is a well-known social commentator on courtship.
Rosalind has been the delegate representing Australian and New Zealand at the International Institute of Introduction Services.
She is a keen follower of the Arts and supports Opportunity International.
She had four children and with her new husband, Tom Baker, they now have 11 grandchildren between them.
who has influenced you as a gay person in history?
There have been many gay people in history like Tchaikovsky, Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward. Which gay historical figure has influenced you and why?
who do you admire in history who has aspired you to be a better peson whether they are gay or straight in history.
I admire tchiakovsky and Noel Coward because lived in a time when Gay was not allowed and Noel Coward was sent to prison becuase homosexuality was against the law it nearly broke him. Homosexuality almost drove tchiakovsky insane it caused him to marry the wrong woman again she nearly made him go insane. whenever you listen to tchiakovsky's music you can hear the pain and the passion for the music.
Darn I just realised I made a mistake it was not Noel Coward who to jail it was Oscar Wilde who went to jail.
Tennessee Williams. Although there are many works of his that were banned and discarded that were more openly "gay" He continued in this vein and lived his passion every day of his life. He was never truly quiet about who he was, and lived his life to the fullest. I believe that his artistry in his works go to show the definition of what true human emotion is. For that I admire him greatly, and as long as I am alive I will continue to pass down his works to those who may not know.. He has influenced me in that though it may be hard to remain true to who you are at all times, never give up and never let anyone tell you differently.
Intimate theater suits quick-witted 'Blithe Spirit'
The Steel Beam Theatre in St. Charles is an intimate venue with room for only 80 people. This makes it an interesting prospect for actors, according to Terry Domschke of Elgin, director for "Blithe Spirit," a romantic comedy by Noel Coward opening this weekend.
Thanks for visiting!
