Released in Europe in 2001, La Revancha Del Tango's sexy combination of chillout programming and authentic tango music became a lounge favorite and led to massive sales. Lightning struck twice when it was released two years later in the States--the domestic debut attracted the attention of electronic music hipsters, tango freaks, and world music geeks. And rightfully so. The Gotan trio of Philippe Cohen Solal, Christoph H. Müller, and Eduardo Makaroff write the album's strongest material themselves, but their imaginative incorporation of Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge," Gato Barbieri's theme from the movie Last Tango In Paris and, not surprisingly, Astor Piazzolla's "Vuelvo Al Sur" into the Gotan world shows just how broad and inclusive their tastes really are. Naysayers may complain that this album can be heard in every hip restaurant and clothing boutique from Paris to Los Angeles, but sometimes the cream does rise to the top and gain mass acceptance, as it has here. Is there a more perfect musical metaphor for Nip/Tuck's themes of deeper-than-skin neuroses and narcissistic surgical reinvention than the chic chimera of a club remix? Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden, the dub savants behind contemporary club successes that include Andain's "Beautiful Things", Motorcycle's "As the Rush Comes" and Sarah McLachlan's "Fallen," conjur up a nigh-seamless soundscape of haunting textures and percolating beats here, forcefully pushing the envelope of what a smart song-score can be in the bargain. G&D infuse that consistently entrancing sensibility to material as diverse as the cool-jazz of "Angels" by Wax Poetic/Norah Jones, Daniel Ash's stripped-down reinvention of the standard "Fever" and the retro-disco of Client's "Price of Love." Fans seem of two minds in regard to the Emmy-winning medical drama Nip/Tuck's fourth season, which arrives on DVD in a five-disc set. On one hand, much of the negative press seems to center around the 2006 season's more outlandish storylines, which seem to hew closer to the controversial "Carver" arc than the first season's blend of shock and substance; the curious highlights include an episode set some decades in the future ("Conor McNamara, 2026"), Jacqueline Bisset's madame-turned-organ thief, and Catherine Deneuve as a wealthy Miami mistress who wants her affair's ashes inserted into her silicone breasts ("Diana Lubey"). But on the other, the arrival of Julia (Joely Richardson) and Sean's (Dylan Walsh) baby Conor, and the trauma that surrounds it, the violent conclusion of the Escobar Gallardo storyline, and the addition (and return) of such memorable guests as Peter Dinklage, Larry Hagman, Brooke Shields, and Rosie O'Donnell, help to keep the show's fascinating trademark blend of sudsy shenanigans and keen psychological drama intact. Whether one loves or hates the four season of Nip/Tuck, there's no denying that there's still more offbeat, disturbing and engrossing action at the offices of McNamara-Troy than most other television series. The Fourth Season DVD set includes all fifteen episodes from the season, as well as deleted scenes from several episodes, a gag reel centered around Julian McMahon, and short but intriguing featurettes devoted to the real surgical procedures shown on the program and the exceptional guest cast. All are light on information (save the surgery extra) and strong on flash and talking heads, but fans should find them an agreeable chaser after watching the full season. -- Paul Gaita

Nip/Tuck fans, season 5 delivers exactly what you've come to expect from the over-the-top series about plastic surgeons and their love lives, foibles, off-kilter clients, and whirling inner demons. The eight episodes follow what has been one of Nip/Tuck's most engaging--and outrageous--seasons overall, and are absolutely delicious savored individually and as ongoing pieces of the story line. Both Dr. Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) and Dr. Christian Troy (the delectably vile Julian McMahon) are battling their own health and physical issues--Sean, who is using a wheelchair in the aftermath of the truly shocking knife attack by Colleen (Sharon Gless), and Christian, who discovers he's suffering from cancer--a type that he and viewers may find ironic, given his choice of occupation. But the diagnosis forces Christian, finally, to look inside--and not to like what he sees. The arc of the story line over these episodes is striking for its ability to show Christian as multilayered and complex--maybe even in possession of a conscience, and a soul. Julia (Joely Richardson) manages to be divinely glowing even while deathly ill, and up-and-comer protégé Raj (the hilarious Adhir Kalyan, formerly of Aliens in America) makes a great impression as the longtime doc duo's new straight man, but also eagerly partakes in the sexual depravity that seems to follow that plastic surgery practice all over the country. And love can spring up in the most unlikely places--suffice to say that Christian may want to settle down for real--and that Dr. Liz Cruz (the rock-solid Roma Maffia) has touched his heart in a way that few apparently ever have. Another unlikely place--and this is Nip/Tuck, after all--is the designer sofa in Christian's office to which a visiting doctor forms, shall we say, an attachment. (If the viewer doesn't say "Oh, no, they're not going to do that!" it's not Nip/Tuck.) The boxed set also comes with the hefty feature The Science of Beauty, in which plastic surgeons, mathematicians, and other scientists explain that the ideal of attractiveness truly can be broken down into planes and proportions.
