Tales of the Gold Monkey: The Complete Series
List Price: $49.97
Sale Price: $24.48
|
|
|
This fondly remembered adventure series was set in 1938 on the fictional South Pacific island of Boragora, where freelance American pilot Jake Cutter (Stephen Collins) got in and out of one dangerous scrape after another with the help of his one-eyed dog Jack and a beat-up Grumman Goose seaplane. With Caitlin O'Heaney as espionage agent Sarah Stickney White, Jeff MacKay as boozy mechanic Corky, and Roddy McDowall as local bar owner Bon Chance Louie. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; "making of" documentary; audio commentary; photo gallery; biographies; more. 20 episodes plus the feature-length pilot on 6 discs. 16 3/4 hrs.
Stephen Collins heroically tries to keep up with the (Indiana) Joneses as rakishly charming soldier of misfortune Jake Cutter, who works as a pilot for hire on the South Pacific island of Boragora in 1938. Comparisons with Raiders of the Lost Ark are inevitable, but according to the series retrospective included as a bonus feature on this six-disc set, producer Don Bellisario (Quantum Leap, Magnum P.I., and NCIS) pitched this to the networks before Indy ever cracked his whip. It was only after Raiders became such a colossal hit that ABC saw gold in Monkey. Alas, this series never really took off, but nearly 30 years later, it's a grandly entertaining bit of escapist fare that packs old Hollywood Saturday matinee thrills and adventure into every episode. The colorful characters include Corky (Jeff Mackay), Jake's trusty (when he's not drunk) mechanic and sidekick; Bon Chance Louie (the peerless Roddy McDowall), the ethically questionable French liaison and governor, and owner of the disreputable hangout the Monkey Bar; and Sarah Stickney White (Caitlin O'Hearney), chanteuse and spy. Stealing nearly every scene he's in is Jack, Jake's one-eyed dog, always good for a comical cutaway. You can't beat the Nazis for villainy (check out John Hillerman's outrageous accent in the feature-length pilot episode), but Monkey steps over the PC line with deadly dragon lady Koji (Marta Du Bois) and her samurai henchman. These Tales are told mostly tongue-in-cheek. Expensive for its day, the series nevertheless has a B-movie look, which enhances its hokey charms. In addition to the newly filmed interviews with cast and creators, the bonus features include five immersive audio commentaries, as well as detailed character bios and a series "fact file." Virtually unseen since its original broadcast, Tales of the Gold Monkey is of more than nostalgic interest. Stephen Collins fans will surely be in--wait for it--7th Heaven. --Donald Liebenson

Gilligan's Island: The Complete First Season
List Price: $39.98
Sale Price: $16.76
|
|
|
Despite critical barbs as sharp as a Maroobi spear, Gilligan's Island has proven unsinkable. Its first season was 1964's top-rated show. The expository theme song is one of television's most quoted, and its characters--the Skipper (Alan Hale Jr.), first mate Gilligan (Bob Denver), the millionaire (Jim Backus) and his wife (Natalie Schaefer), a movie star (Tina Louise), "and the rest" (Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells, as the Professor and Mary Ann, wouldn't get their opening credit props until season two)--are pop culture icons. Revisiting the first season's 36 episodes is a not-guilty-at-all pleasure. Some sure and surprising hands piloted these inaugural episodes, including Ida Lupino, Jack Arnold (The Creature from the Black Lagoon), Christian Nyby (The Thing), and Richard Donner (who went on to direct Superman and Lethal Weapon). The "seven stranded castaways" from the ill-fated S.S. Minnow (slyly named for former Federal Communications Commission head Newton "vast wasteland" Minow) received memorable visits from the likes of Hans Conreid as errant pilot Wrong Way Feldman, a young Kurt Russell as Jungle Boy, and Larry Storch as a Cagney-esque bank robber. But these were mere diversions from the heart of the series; the no-man-is-an-island social microcosm that creator Sherwood Schwartz conceived as an anti-war parable (this courtesy of his optional commentary during the fabled unaired series pilot). In the Christmas episode "Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk," Santa Claus himself drops in to lift the disheartened castaways' spirits. "You could have been enemies," he tells them, "instead of a family group who all learned to get along." This is they key to this series' enduring popularity. That, and the unending debate: Ginger or Mary Ann? --Donald Liebenson
All 36 episodes from season one--including "Two on a Raft," "Good Night, Sweet Skipper," "Wrongway Feldman," "Gilligan Meets Jungle Boy," and "Voodoo Something to Me," as well as the original unaired pilot--are featured in a three-disc set. 15 1/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, Spanish, French; audio commentary on pilot; trivia; more. **36 episodes on 3 discs. 15 1/4 hrs.**

Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N.
List Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $5.94
|
|
|
Shortly after Dick Van Dyke played Bert in Mary Poppins, he starred as Lt. Robin Crusoe in this lesser known 1966 comedy, splendidly showcasing his myriad comedic talents in a South seas setting. Families who remember Van Dyke's riotous romp as Navy-pilot-turned-island-native will appreciate this digital release of the original film. The laughs begin from the moment Crusoe is marooned at sea on a military-issue rubber raft and fights off a shark while reading a step-by-step survival guide. By the time he washes ashore on the island, discovers the wonders of bamboo, and stumbles upon a poker-playing astro-Chimp, audiences are given over to the gigglefest. Nancy Kwan, as Wednesday, adds to the merriment as the island's other castaway who plays a humorous game of charades with Crusoe before revealing her status as an exile, having escaped her overprotective father. With the battle cry, "Women have rights too," Crusoe and Wednesday prepare for the inevitable patriarchal showdown, a madcap misadventure. While special features are sorely lacking--such as an interview with Van Dyke--this decent family flick remains a rich Disney relic. (Ages 4 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Here are some more information for Monkey Island:

The 100th Monkey of 2012?
The hundredth-monkey effect is a supposed phenomenon in which a learned behavior spreads instantaneously from one group of monkeys to all related monkeys once a critical number is reached. Since homo sapien sapiens came from monkeys (so they say) then this principle should rightly relate to us. Right? Right or wrong, someone will be the 100th monkey that will open the 2012 floodgates (metaphorically speaking of course).
By generalization, the 100th monkey concept means the instantaneous, paranormal spreading of an idea or ability to the remainder of a population once a certain portion of that population has heard of the new idea or learned the new ability.
Scientists were studying and watching a group of macaques monkeys on the Japanese island of Koshima in 1952 when they purportedly observed that some of these monkeys learned to wash sweet potatoes, and gradually this new behavior spread through the younger generation of monkeys—in the usual fashion, through observation and repetition. Other researchers observed that once a critical number of monkeys was reached—the so-called hundredth monkey—this previously learned behavior instantly spread across the water to monkeys on nearby islands.
Bingo! We all wash our sweet potatoes!
Is it thus so improbable that we could have a MAJOR shift in consciousness over the next 2-4 years? Have we been so blinded by evolutionism and the slow drift of time that we've forgotten that the fossil records show LEAPS, axial age style changes in short periods of time, and other non-logical events? As Gregg Braden wrote, "We have been culturally taught to look for familiar patterns of information. we seek something that makes sense in terms of previous experience."
What if something we've not seen that doesn't make sense occurs? What then?
Could it be that we have been conditioned (acculturation at its best) to not seeing what is actually present because it's not locked in to our societal beliefs? Sociologists call this "consensus reality". What we are looking for is what we are looking with. It's a convoluted circular reasoning, otherwise known as a RUT, that is hard to step out of; however, from time to time supernatural interventions awaken us from our dream matrix and take us into new worlds.
Forget the fat lady singing! Let's usher on stage the 100th monkey!
