Anything Goes Anything Goes
List Price: $12.98
Sale Price: $30.95

This is the second film titled Anything Goes to star Bing Crosby (the first was a 1936 film). Both films change a lot of the original Cole Porter stage musical, but at least the later version keeps a few more Porter songs. Still, there is something odd about a Cole Porter film filled with "additional songs" by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen (perhaps Porter's work was not warm and cuddly enough for 1956 America, although it seemed to work well at MGM with High Society, released the same year). Crosby plays a Broadway star teamed up with young TV hotshot Donald O'Connor. Vacationing separately in Europe and needing a leading lady for their upcoming show, each signs a prospect--Crosby snaps up Mitzi Gaynor (at her perkiest) and O'Connor finds Jeanmaire, a French dancer. The show can only have one female star, so when the quartet crosses paths on the ocean liner back to the U.S., sparks will fly. Or not--this Paramount musical lacks any definable zip, from the sleepy dialogue to the listless camera. The capable Nick Castle staged the musical sequences, although Jeanmaire's numbers were choreographed by Roland Petit (also her husband). The Porter songs are half-heartedly rendered, although O'Connor and Gaynor get some oomph into "It's De-Lovely." Der Bingle was born to burble "Blow, Gabriel, Blow," but it's too little, too late. --Robert Horton

TWO BROADWAY LUMINARIES ARE ABOARD AN OCEAN LINER LOOKING FOR A TALENTED LEADING LADY TO STAR IN THEIR NEW SHOW. WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN TWO LOVELY LADIES SHOW UP FOR ONE PROMISED PART?

Bloodhounds of Broadway Bloodhounds of Broadway
List Price: $19.98
Sale Price: $9.97

Mitzi Gaynor plays a charming fish-out-of-the-Hudson country bumpkin with a heart of gold, plopped into the guys-and-molls world of Damon Runyon's Bloodhounds of Broadway. The film showcases the splendid talents, often underrated, of Gaynor as actress, singer, and, most importantly, dancer--high-stepping, tapping, and even contra-dancing her way across the screen with a winsome smile. The script is pure Runyon, following some numbers-runners on the lam (one is even named "Numbers"), who end up in rural Georgia bewitched by the sweet innocence of Gaynor's character, Emily Ann Stackerlee, bedecked in Dorothy Gale calico and curly pigtails. The dialogue around her is whizzing with Runyon-isms that pass blissfully over her naive head ("Madison Square Garden!" she exclaims, being told by the hustlers of the joys of Manhattan. "Do they grow beautiful things there?" "Yeah," deadpans Numbers' sidekick, "cauliflowers."). A great throwaway line early in the film has a sweating con worrying about being "subpeeniya'd." The appeal of the film is part wise-guy Runyon, and part captivating Gaynor, who doesn't really belong in the underbelly world she's drawn into, but shines nonetheless. Several song-and-dance bits will appeal to musicals fans, including the old-timey "Cindy," and "Eighty Miles Outside of Atlanta." Extras are well worth the price of the DVD. There's an informative documentary on Runyon, his newspaper career, and his self-invention as the chronicler of the side-of-the-mouth mutts of Times Square. And a latter-day interview with Gaynor is radiant; clearly having spent her life as a dancer has left its mark on her in her golden years, absolutely lovely and charming with great anecdotes and self-effacing yarns. There are also miniature versions of the original lobby cards. All are guaranteed to put you in a New York state of mind. --A.T. Hurley

Peppy musical comedy stars Mitzi Gaynor as a simple Southern girl with a talent for song and dance who meets a New York bookie (Scott Brady) who's travelling through Georgia while fleeing criminal charges. Charmed by Gaynor's goodness, Brady decides to face the music, taking her with him to Manhattan where she hits the big time performing at an upscale nightclub. With Mitzi Green, Marguerite Chapman; look quickly for a young Charles Bronson in an uncredited role as a waiter. 90 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, Spanish, French; featurettes; interview; photo gallery; theatrical trailer.

Anyone who thinks everyone in the 1950s held marriage sacred hasn't seen We're Not Married, one of the more gleefully cynical snipes ever aimed at that fundamental institution. Five couples discover that their marriages aren't legal--Ginger Rogers and Fred Allen as a bickering pair of beloved radio personalities; Marilyn Monroe as a beauty contestant with her oppressed house-husband, David Wayne; Eve Arden and Paul Douglas as a chatty pair who've run out of conversation; Louis Calhern as a kindly tycoon married to gold-digging Zsa Zsa Gabor; and Eddie Bracken as a soldier who's just learned his not-quite-wife Mitzi Gaynor is pregnant. Into their lives comes a letter from the government revealing the truth about their unions, and suddenly everyone considers what their lives might be, if only... We're Not Married spins five variations on a theme, with smart, sly, and sardonic results. --Bret Fetzer

The dazzling Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, brought to lush life by the director of the original stage version, Joshua Logan. Set on a remote island during the Second World War, South Pacific tracks two parallel romances: one between a Navy nurse (Mitzi Gaynor) "as corny as Kansas in August" and a wealthy French plantation owner (Rossano Brazzi), the other between a young American officer (John Kerr) and a native girl (France Nuyen). The theme of interracial love was still daring in 1958, and so was director Logan's decision to overlay emotional moments with tinted filters--a technique that misfires as often as it hits. The comic relief tends to fall flat, and an overly spunky Mitzi Gaynor is a poor substitute for the stage original's Mary Martin. But the location scenery on the Hawaiian island of Kauai is gorgeous, and the songs are among the finest in the American musical catalog: "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger than Springtime," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," "This Nearly Was Mine." That's Juanita Hall as the sly native trader Bloody Mary, singing the haunting tune that launched a thousand tiki bars, "Bali H'ai." Based on stories from James Michener's book Tales from the South Pacific. --Robert Horton

RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN BOX SET COLLECT - DVD Movie

The Rodgers & Hammerstein Collection contains film versions of the five major works by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who helped define the American musical landscape and rewrite the direction of musical theater. After enjoying extremely successful careers working with others, Rodgers and Hammerstein first teamed up in 1943 for the prairie tale Oklahoma!, with songs including "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "People Will Say We're in Love." The subsequent 1955 film starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, who teamed up again for 1956's Carousel. While that film's dark nature made it less popular than its predecessor, the score ("If I Loved You," "You'll Never Walk Alone") was Rodgers's favorite. The King and I (also 1956) featured stage star Yul Brynner as the King of Siam and Deborah Kerr as schoolteacher Anna Leonowens, who must learn Asian customs even as she tries to instill some of her Western ones. The somewhat bloated version of South Pacific (1958) follows two couples during World War II and features standards such as "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair" and "Some Enchanted Evening" from stars Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi. The last film, The Sound of Music (1965), proved to be the most popular, with Julie Andrews winning the hearts of seven children and their father with her blissful songs. And if the perhaps saccharine music and plot may test the patience of some, there's no doubt that songs such as "My Favorite Things" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" have charmed audiences around the world for decades. Accompanying the Big 5 in this set is the relatively minor State Fair from 1945 (though it does have "It Might as Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing"). Some may expect and prefer other entries in the R&H canon such as Flower Drum Song or the television production Cinderella, but those were produced by different studios. This 12-disc set from 2006 includes the two-disc special editions of each film, remastered and anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs (except State Fair, which was shot in traditional 1.33:1 aspect ratio). Bonus features include the Todd-AO version of Oklahoma! (which should look better than the CinemaScope version but doesn't); 40th-anniversary bonus material for The Sound of Music, including a commentary track by Julie Andrews; Lilliom, the 1934 film based on the same story as Carousel; and the 1962 version of State Fair starring Pat Boone and Ann-Margaret. --David Horiuchi
