As peopled by John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, director Peter Chelsom's romantic fable mines a familiar vein: What if a pair of attractive protagonists engaged to others suddenly found themselves madly in love? If the premise is as vintage Hollywood as popcorn and sticky theater floors, its soundtrack is smartly contemporary, a collection of new songs (by Evan & Jaron, Shawn Colvin, Wood, Heather Nova, John Mayer, and Chantal Kreviazuk) and well-selected album cuts (by Annie Lennox, Nick Drake, Bap Kennedy, David Gray) filled out with a loopy slice of vintage Louis Armstrong ("Cool Yule") and jazzy solo piano score excerpt by film composer Alan Silvestri. The tone shifts warmly amid jangly alterna-pop, folk-tinged, and quieter, more jazz/blues flavored cuts. It's tasteful, sensual stuff--and largely devoid of the cloying bathos of similar Hollywood romantic fare. -Jerry McCulley

Never Been Kissed: Music From The Motion Picture
List Price: $11.98
Sale Price: $6.98

This odds 'n' ends mix of '60s, '70s, and '90s pop clashes like an all-plaid tuxedo, so those with a stereo pre-programming function--or better yet, a remote--would be wise to rearrange this album's songs in a less jarring manner. Unlike many teen flick soundtracks, Never Been Kissed tries hard to follow the film script's championing of the underdog: There are no Everclears, no Alanises, just primarily a warm, risk-free blend of mostly lesser-known pop acts (Semisonic, Remy Zero, Sonichrome) who sound vaguely reminiscent of other, bigger-name pop acts. The rub is that the string of modern bubblegum numbers segues into a sprinkling of old faves like John and Yoko's "Watching the Wheels" and the Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby," both of which are hideously out of place next to the ethnic rap stylings of Ozomatli and no-brainer jubilance of teen idol Jeremy Jordan. The final insult is the inclusion of The Smiths' tender "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want," a ballad that strongly identified the mood of '80s high-school movies (it originally appeared on the Pretty in Pink soundtrack) but has no meaning in this cootchy-coo context. --Kristy Ojala

Although at first glance it looks like a movie dreamed up by a marketing committee (and in some respects it probably was), Space Jam actually defies the odds against it to become a dazzling display of family entertainment. There's a kind of demented genius to the idea of casting NBA superstar Michael Jordan in a live-action and animated movie costarring the beloved characters from Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes cartoons. They play off each other like seasoned veterans of vaudeville, and Jordan never falls into the kind of awkward, amateurish showmanship that you might expect from a sports idol. He's comfortable in the cartoon land of his costars, who include Bugs Bunny and sexy newcomer Lola Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester & Tweety, Speedy Gonzalez, the Tazmanian Devil, Foghorn Leghorn, and Yosemite Sam. They've all been hijacked to an outer-space amusement park run by the Nerdlucks, who strike a Faustian bargain with the Looney heroes: if Bugs and Co. can defeat the Nerdluck "Monstars" in a basketball game, they'll win back their freedom; if they lose, they'll be doomed to stay there forever as enslaved entertainers. So they kidnap Jordan as their coach and "secret weapon" while the nefarious Nerdlucks suck out the basketball skills from such stellar victims as Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing. It all leads to reckless abandon on the basketball court, and Bill Murray pops in for some hilarious support. Combining traditional animation and computer-generated Nerdlucks with its live-action cast, Space Jam was made in the anarchic spirit of the Looney Tunes cartoons, where anything goes as long as it's funny and off-the-wall (or the ceiling, or the door, or the floor...). Technically astounding, it's also witty enough to entertain adults and kids alike. --Jeff Shannon

1996 - Touchstone Pictures - VHS Tape - Kazaam - Stars: Shaquille O'Neal, Ally Walker - Director: Paul M. Glaser - Color - 94 Minutes - New - Out of Production - Collectible - Mint - Rated PG
This junk-candy movie stars Shaquille O'Neal as a genie who not only becomes a little boy's protector but also a problem in his oversized ubiquity. Kids will enjoy the concept and the ongoing visual joke of juxtaposing a small child with O'Neal, but the film (directed by Paul Michael Glaser) isn't always particularly wholesome. It also has that messy, semiliterate storytelling look where editing logic goes out the window in favor of a more impulsive style of throwing out one busy image after another. --Tom Keogh

Seinfeld: Season Four

It's hard to believe, but for the first three seasons nobody really knew that Seinfeld was about, well, you know. It wasn't until season 4--unleashed here in a four-disc set that's equal in scope, quality, and quantity of bonus material to its predecessors--that the show really became something. In a series which can claim every installment as classic, the two-parter on disc 1 titled "The Pitch/The Ticket" truly stands out as a defining episode and, in retrospect, marked Seinfeld 4 as the breakthrough season. It's the one where (fake) NBC executives express their interest in working with Jerry Seinfeld on a TV show, then moves to the who's-on-first shtick of George successfully pitching Jerry on creating "a show about nothing." Scattered throughout the discs in commentaries by cast and creators and in numerous "Inside Look" documentaries, nearly everyone expresses some anxiety about the season having a story "arc" depicting Jerry and his "real" life becoming a sitcom. The show had been only marginally successful up to that point anyway, and with the edict, "no hugging, no learning," still in place, maybe messing with nothing was a bad idea. What makes the arc so arch is the self-reflexive way it details the reality of Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David coming up with the concept and pitching it to (real) NBC executives as a show that really was about, well, you know. In one of the many informally informative interview segments, Jerry remembers hitting a stride during this time when a lot of crazy ideas started to make sense. "Everything was just a wild guess," he says, "and it takes a while to get confident that you're guessing pretty good. I think sometime in season 4 we realized we were guessing pretty good." Oh, that we could all be so good at nothing. Season 4 also gave us the episodes "The Bubble Boy" ("He lives in a bubble!"), "The Pick" ("There was no pick!"), and, perhaps most memorably, "The Contest." Recalling how nervous he thought NBC might be about a show based on how long a person can remain--ahem--master of his domain, Larry David says that he kept the idea hidden for a long time. He may have had NBC sweating, but the episode goes by without anyone uttering the word that it's really about. The curmudgeonly David also observes that another famous season 4 episode, "The Outing," only made it on the air due to a network "note" about making sure it wouldn't be offensive to homosexuals. Hence we have the addition of another standard to the Seinfeld lexicon of American pop culture: "Not that there's anything wrong with that!" Not only wasn't there anything wrong with it, the episode won a GLAAD Media Award. Season 4 also brought Seinfeldits first Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Stay tuned for season 5 (and a move to the coveted Thursday-at-9 slot) when the volcano we now know was always brewing really blew its comedic top. --Ted Fry

A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh

The bright, glossy world of Doris Day and Rock Hudson sex comedies gets a self-aware brush-up in Down with Love. Pillow-lipped Renée Zellweger (Chicago) plays Barbara Novak, the author of a bestselling book called Down with Love that advises women to focus on their careers and have sex à la carte--just like a man would. Determined to prove that Novak is just as vulnerable to love as any woman, dashingly chauvinist magazine writer Catcher Block (ever-charming Ewan McGregor, Moulin Rouge) pretends to be a courtly astronaut who wouldn't dream of putting his hand on a woman's knee. This piffle of a story seems like nothing more than an excuse for ironic double-entendres and dazzling production design, until a sneaky plot twist suddenly raises the stakes for the movie's end. As he always does, the brilliant David Hyde Pierce (Frasier) scores the most comic points as Block's fussy editor. --Bret Fetzer
In the tradition of the Doris Day-Rock Hudson comedies of the 1960s comes this effervescent period romantic romp featuring Renee Zellweger as a best-selling writer who preaches equal rights for women in the bedroom and the boardroom. Chauvinistic magazine writer Ewan McGregor wants to make mincemeat out of Zellweger and her beliefs, so he plots to woo her, then write about his conquest. David Hyde Pierce, Sarah P aulson and Tony Randall also star. 102 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English, Spanish; audio commentary; deleted scenes; featurettes; music video; more.

Seinfeld (Season 4) DVD Review
One of the best sitcoms not just of its time, but of all time, Seinfeld redefined the sitcom genre. No longer was it necessary to have contrived plot, a lesson to be learned, or some other ridiculous cookie-cutter approach. With Seinfeld, an episode could be about nothing and everything all at the same time. The show follows the lives of four friends living in New York City, stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld, his childhood friend George Costanza (Jason Alexander), his eccentric next-door neighbor Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards), and his ex-girlfriend Elaine Benese (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Together, they form one of the most unforgettable comedy teams in television history.
The Seinfeld (Season 4) DVD offers a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere in which Jerry asks George to accompany him on a trip to Los Angeles where he'll be appearing on The Tonight Show. While in Hollywood, the two attempt to track down Kramer who recently moved there to become a star. But the trip goes awry when hotel maid Lupe can't grasp the concept of George's preferred bed tuck, Jerry loses his Tonight Show material, and Kramer is fingered by local police as the prime suspect in the "smog strangler" killings... Other notable episodes from Season 4 include "The Bubble Boy" in which George incurs the wrath of an entire township following his argument over a Trivial Pursuit question with a local handicapped icon who (for medical reasons) lives in a bubble, and "The Contest" (based on a real life Larry David experience) in which Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine place a wager on who can practice self-denial the longest... "The Junior Mint" and "The Handicap Spot" round out a year that is arguably the best season in Seinfeld's hilarious nine-year run...
