John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.") Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

A Raisin in the Sun (Modern Library)

"Never before, the entire history of the American theater, has so much of the truth of black people's lives been seen on the stage," observed James Baldwin shortly before A Raisin in the Sun opened on Broadway in 1959.Indeed Lorraine Hansberry's award-winning drama about the hopes and aspirations of a struggling, working-class family living on the South Side of Chicago connected profoundly with the psyche of black America--and changed American theater forever. The play's title comes from a line in Langston Hughes's poem "Harlem," which warns that a dream deferred might "dry up/like a raisin in the sun.""The events of every passing year add resonance to A Raisin in the Sun," said The New York Times. "It is as if history is conspiring to make the play a classic." This Modern Library edition presents the fully restored, uncut version of Hansberry's landmark work with an introduction by Robert Nemiroff.

Brik-A-Blok: Build Forts, Playhouses and Castles Using Your Imagination!
Have you heard about the new modular mazes that turn into playhouses called Brik-A-Blok? If not, you will soon be hearing about from every kid you know because the holidays are approaching!
Brik-A-Blok is a new, North American toy that is causing a stir among children and adults alike. This system is a set of modular, easy to put together polymer panels that allow children to safely build forts, playhouses, castles and mazes.
It is an educational toy system that is built for kids ages 6 to 12 years old. The pieces are brightly colored and easy to assemble. You can purchase 26 panel or 46 panel sets.
As many parents know, there are plenty of flimsy tents and playhouses that you can fold up and put away. There are also many already assembled playhouses that are a pain to take down.
Brik-A-Blok allows children to easily snap together the pieces and create whatever their imagination desires. It helps them to develop social, interactive and imaginative skills.
This system was created over a span of two years and has been carefully designed to give children a fun, educational and safe place to play. Safety was the primary focus when creating this product.
In fact, this product has the Safety Certified seal on the packaging approved by NSF International. The assembly joints have also been designed to prevent any accidents.
Brik-A-Blok also comes with a reusable storage bag that fits into a closet or trunk easily. As children grow, their imaginations can build any number of things. It is only limited by their imagination!
If your kids have imagination, you owe it to them to check out this brand new toy! To see a picture of it, take a look right here: Brik-A-Blok. Your kids will spend all day playing in their newly created imaginary world instead of watching TV or playing video games!

What is a good Broadway song for an alto / mezzo soprano to sing?
I have auditions for Paper-mill Playhouse on February 9th and the song requirement is that it must be from Broadway. I want a fun song but I would also like to have a pretty song that would showcase my voice. I'm thinking When I Look At You from The Pimpernel. Any Other Ideas??
There is a fabulous song from The Music Man, sung by Marian against the backdrop of the barbershop quartet. The quartet is Lida Rose, and Marian sings Dream of Now over it. If you pick up a copy of the broadway song book from Music Man you will see that Lida Rose is included, but Dream of Now is not. Nor is it a part of the accompaniment. Singing one song over another is rather fun, and can be impressive, too!
Behind the scenes: 'Lost in Yonkers'
The Paper Mill Playhouse has been showing one of Neil Simon's best works, "Lost in Yonkers," for the past two weeks. But on Feb. 19, the theater offered a look behind the stage when Associate Artistic Director Patrick Parker, led a tour to share the secrets that made this script come to life.
