The Monkees - Greatest Hits The Monkees - Greatest Hits
List Price: $13.98
Sale Price: $7.32

Unless you're a snob, a good Monkees collection belongs on your shelves, not too far from discs by the Turtles, the Lovin' Spoonful, and other avatars of clean, occasionally rocking '60s Top 40 pop. Greatest Hits is a more than generous stack, bringing together not only the obvious megahits ("I'm a Believer," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," the incredibly propulsive "Valleri") but also a number of tunes that had the bad luck to fall on the wrong side of the act's swift rise and fall. Foremost among these is "Porpoise Song," a lyrically incomprehensible Goffin/King stab at psychedelia that's at once a crass cash-in and one of the loveliest, most fragile sounds to emerge from the American hippie dream. --Rickey Wright

The Tick Vs. Season One The Tick Vs. Season One
List Price: $23.99
Sale Price: $16.98

Even with one episode missing, The Tick vs. Season One offers a dozen good reasons to enjoy one of the wackiest superheroes of all time. From his humble beginnings as an in-house comic book character created by 17-year-old Ben Edlund for a Boston comic shop, the Tick (with his muscular physique, twitching antennae, and form-fitting "blue tights of justice") has proven remarkably popular and versatile as a multimedia juggernaut, attracting a global fan base in comics, then this animated series beginning in 1994, and finally as a live-action comedy series starring Patrick Warburton as "the big blue bug of justice." All three of the Tick's incarnations are wildly entertaining, but the animated series comes closest to capturing the unbridled giddiness of Edlund's comics, albeit somewhat sanitized for a Saturday-morning audience of kids and Tick-loving teens and grown-ups. And while episode #11, "The Tick vs. The Mole Men" (widely considered to be one of the first season's weakest episodes) is missing here for legal reasons (but may be included in a future DVD release), the 12 episodes included are remarkably consistent in their well-written hilarity of character and plotting. "The Tick vs. Chairface Chippendale" is just one example of the series' rogue's gallery of oddball monstrosities (the villain's head is a wooden chair, after all!) and the show's clever writers are always finding inventive ways to incorporate in-jokes, show-biz homage (such as the villainous "Uncommon Cold," who sounds suspiciously like James Mason!), and choice bits of throwaway dialogue that will cause older viewers to burst out laughing. It's regrettable that Buena Vista (i.e., Disney) didn't include any bonus features with this two-disc set (at the very least, the Tick's comic book origins should be acknowledged), and the color and clarity of these episodes varies a bit, from crisp and clean to just a little it fuzzy. But let's face it, the animation (as good as it is) isn't exactly state-of-the-art, and most of The Tick's quality is derived from the outrageous cast of characters (including patriotic superheroine American Maid and the Tick's moth-costumed sidekick, Arthur), all of whom reside in a kind of alternate world of hyper-imagination. Perhaps that's why The Tick has proven so enduring as a pop-cultural touchstone of the late 20th century: Whether he's in a comic book, an animated cartoon, or a live-action sitcom, the Tick is just a goofy, lovable, well-meaning reflection of our better selves, eager (as the saying goes) to swat evil on the snout with the rolled-up newspaper of goodness. Make way for seasons 2 and 3! --Jeff Shannon

Twelve first-season episodes--including "The Tick vs. Chairface Chippendale," "The Tick vs. the Proto-Clown," "The Tick vs. Arthur's Bank Account," "The Tick vs. the Idea Men," and "The Tick vs. Brainchild"--are featured in a two-disc set. 4 1/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital stereo Surround, French Dolby Digital stereo Surround; Subtitles: English (SDH). **12 episodes on 2 discs. 4 1/4 hrs.**

The Monkees - Our Favorite Episodes The Monkees - Our Favorite Episodes
List Price: $14.95
Sale Price: $29.99

Whether you're indulging nostalgia or experiencing the Monkees for the first time, Our Favorite Episodes--chosen by Davey Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith--is a curious time capsule. Even for veteran Monkeephiles, it's obvious that the TV series, totaling 58 episodes from 1966 to 1968, hasn't aged very gracefully. It's fun as a pop-cultural artifact, and original fans will fondly recall the eagerness with which each week's episode was anticipated. Looking back, however, the shows are marginally amusing, and their improvisational, low-budget strategy tends to limit their lasting appeal. For die-hard fans it won't matter a bit; any chance to own and archive the Monkee phenomenon (with brief latter-day interviews included) is going to be welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed. Because Jones's favorite episode was actually the Emmy-winning "Royal Flush," the inclusion of "Hitting the High Seas" is a conspicuous blunder, but it's compensated by Peter's "Monkee vs. Machine." Directed by series producer (and then-budding filmmaker) Bob Rafelson, and featuring comedian Stan Freberg as a stodgy toy-company executive, this early episode was a first-season highlight. Mickey selected (and directed) the series finale, "Mijacogeo (The Frodis Caper)," which is noteworthy for a filmed performance of Tim Buckley singing a rare acoustic version of "Siren Song" (further proof that the Monkees were hipper than their TV personas). Mike's favorite "Fairy Tale" is a wild romp indeed, with Nesmith in drag (as a fairy princess), sounding shockingly like Cher from her later TV variety show. They're semi-inspired at best, but these vintage episodes still capture the lunacy that accompanied the meteoric success of the "Pre-Fab Four." --Jeff Shannon

IN NEW INTERVIEWS, EACH MEMBER OF THE GROUP DISCUSS THEIR FAVORITE EPISODE FROM THE MONKEES CLASSIC TV SERIES, WHICH THEN FOLLOWS. DAVY: HITTING THE HIGH SEAS. PETER: MONKEES VS.MACHINE. MICKY: THE FRODIS CAPER. MIKE: FAIRY TALE.

Monkees red youth T-shirt 'Monkey Around' tee Monkees red youth T-shirt 'Monkey Around' tee

The Monkees t-shirt printed with Davy, Peter, Mike & Mickey doing what they do best - 'monkeying around'. Davy Jones swings on a trapeze, Mike Nesmith & Peter Tork play guitar, with Mickey Dolenz on drums. Blue-toned image is splashed against a yellow background on a red t-shirt. The Monkees guitar logo is printed above in white. Your little Monkee fan (not Monkey, please!) will love it. What began as a group of actors/musicians portraying a musical group for a TV series, eventually became a bonafide musical sensation. The Monkees television show was an instant success. Some of the best songwriters of the day wrote music for the series, including Carole King & Neil Diamond. The singles 'Last Train to Clarksville, 'Daydream Believer,' & "Pleasant Valley Sunday" were huge hits. An episode of The Brady Bunch featured Davy singing 'Girl' for a star-struck Marcia Brady. Jimi Hendrix was the opening act for their 1967 summer tour! The TV show used techniques rarely seen before - abrupt inserts and jump cuts; fantasy sequences, and talking directly into the camera, or to off-camera staff ("breaking the fourth wall" ). Each episode featured a musical vignette which inspired the M-TV format years later. At the peak of their popularity in 1967, The Monkees sold more albums than the Beatles. MonkeeMania was on a par with Beatlemania. But instead of the 'Fab Four', the Monkees were dubbed the 'PRE-FAB four' to connote their "fabricated" beginnings on TV. As the group grew more popular, they insisted on writing their own music and playing their own instruments. Their music is as popular today as ever, and the group continued to tour with Davy, Mickey and Peter until 2002. 'I'm A Believer' was covered by the group Smashmouth for the Shrek film, bringing the Monkees music to a new generation. Pay tribute to lead singer, Davy Jones, and a musical group that was a symbol of 60's psychedelic rock and all that is wacky and wild.

The ABCs of Office Inventions: From Staplers to Safety Tools

We use them all the time, but most of us don't know the history of those useful objects that cover our desks. Did you know that the mother of ex-Monkee Mickey Dolenz was the inventor of Liquid Paper? Read on to learn more about the fascinating history of some of your other favorite office supplies.

The Stapler
The earliest known stapler was developed in eighteenth-century France, at the request of King Louis XV. The name of the genius who fabricated this helpful device for making paper stick together hasn't been recorded, but we do know that each staple was handmade (from gold, according to some sources) and imprinted with royal insignia.

The stapler is one of those humble but useful inventions that most of us take for granted. It gained renewed respect when, in 2001, a now-classic episode of "The Office" featured - yes - spoilsport assistant manager Gareth Keenan's stapler trapped in a gelatin dish. As of 2007, "Jell-O Stapler" yielded 1310 Google hits.

The Paper Clip
This handy - if sometimes easy-to-spill - device was invented by Samuel B. Fay, a US citizen, in 1867. However, the wire paper clip, still in wide use today, was patented around 1890 by the British Gem Manufacturing. In a classic example of the - genericized trademark, - the word "Gem" is now used in Swedish to denote "any paper clip."

A rival story claims that Herbert Spencer, the Victorian polymath who coined the term "survival of the fittest," strongly influenced Darwin, and almost got to be novelist George Eliot's husband (he turned her down), also has the invention of the paper clip to his credit. However, there is little evidence to support this story.

The Office
Based on the Latin word "officium," which meant not only duty (an important concept for those bureaucratic, no-fun Romans) but also a formal position such as a magistrature.

The invention of the modern cubicle, meanwhile, is one of those ironic stories with which the history of technology is rife. (Television was originally intended as an educational device, for example.) Colorado designer Robert Propst, working for Herman Miller, Inc, developed the cubicle as part of a 1965 "Action Office" prototype. It seems Propst was trying to liven up workplace design.

The Mouse
Stanford designer Douglas Engelbart developed the first mouse in 1963. Engelbart's mouse was not the streamlined plastic device we know today; it used two large gear-wheels, which could be turned (slowly) to move up or down. Today's ball mouse came a few years later - in 1972, when Engelbart's colleague Bill English chucked out those two gear-wheels and replaced them with a single ball, able to move in any direction (not just straight up and down).

The Filing Cabinet
African-American inventor Henry Brown patented a fire-safe forged-metal "receptacle for storing and preserving papers" "the ancestor of today's filing cabinet" in November 1886. The - vertical file - we all know and love had to wait twelve years, until Edwin Seibels, an insurance-office worker, hit on the space-saving idea of hanging files. (Before that, important business papers were often folded into envelopes and stored in pigeon holes.)

The Utility Knife
The original X-Acto knife - one ancestor of today's box cutter - was invented by Polish immigrant Sundel Doniger, but we'd never have known it if his brother-in-law, one Daniel Gl'ck - the father of US Poet Laureate Louise Gluck - hadn't suggested that hobbyists might find the thin metal knife useful. (Doniger had hoped to market it to surgeons!)

Why did Micky Dolenz go through the trouble of growing his hair out and changing his name to Susan Boyle?

I am positive that there are easier ways to revitalize ones career.

Susan Boyle is an exceptionally talented lady who’s been subjected to considerable criticism in the media. IMHO she deserves every bit of success that she is having.
