This videotaped dance musical comes off as Nutcracker Suite meets Riverdance, with some costuming from Cats thrown in. Wordless, except for occasional narration and the lyrics of a few ballads, the story of a toy maker and his adult son betrayed by an evil apprentice is told through the dance scored by Michael Demus. The masterpiece of the title is the ultimate toy soldier--a living doll. But the apprentice, wearing demonic KISS-style makeup, steals the plans and learns how to control all the toys, forcing the toy maker and son out of their world by "a barrier of pride and hate." Eventually, the son becomes a baby doll to regain entry into the toy world with the hope of growing up again and bringing back his father. The dance is energetic and special-effects laden (fire, steam, slow motion), but not plot driven. Many of the events seem unconnected and characters mysteriously disappear, only to reappear when convenient. Violent imagery, including the hanging of a toy pirate and the crucifixion-like death of the toy maker's son, make this inappropriate for young or impressionable children. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Matlock - The First Season

A running joke on The Simpsons is the idolization of Andy Griffith's Ben Matlock by the aged residents of the Springfield Retirement Home. Watching Matlock's inaugural season, it's no wonder that viewers "of a certain age" would take comfort in watching Atlanta defense attorney Matlock defend the falsely accused and, to quote The Simpsons, "put young people behind bars where they belong." Matlock was something of a departure for TV icon Griffith. While he's got his southern drawl goin' on, he left Andy Taylor back in Mayberry. Folksiness only goes so far in the big city. Matlock's fee is $100,000. And even if Opie or Aunt Bea were menaced, one can't imagine sheriff Andy threatening to feed the perpetrator to the D.A. "piece by piece." Matlock hews closely to the Perry Mason playbook. Most episodes incriminate a suspect, only to have the tenacious Matlock ("Next to injustice, I hate losing," he states) exonerate him or her with some flashy, last-minute courtroom theatrics that threaten to turn the courtroom into a "sideshow." One notable exception is the episode, "The Judge," featuring guest star Dick Van Dyke as a judge and old friend of Matlock who murders his mistress, and then presides over the trial of the man arrested for the crime. Other notable guest stars are Jose Ferrer as a terminally ill crime kingpin arrested for murder in the two-parter, "The Don," and Pat Hingle as a surly and disliked man likewise accused of murder in "Santa Claus." Season One is an auspicious beginning for the series that would run for six years on NBC and then three more on ABC. Casting tweaks and the addition of new characters would improve the proceedings. Bland Lori Lethin, who appears in the pilot episode as Matlock's daughter, a neophyte lawyer, was replaced in the series by the more experienced Linda Purl. The episode, "The People vs. Matlock" introduces Julie Sommars as feisty assistant district attorney Julie March, a foil and friend to Matlock. Nancy Stafford, who appears "The Seduction," would join the cast next season as Matlock's assistant, Michelle Thomas. Matlock even inspired a spinoff; the episode "The Don" pits Matlock against his "bitter enemy," William Conrad's James McShane, a cop-turned-district attorney who would later be transformed into Jason McCabe, aka "Fatman" in Jake and the Fatman (his future costar, Joe Penny, costars in the episode as one of the Don's highly suspect sons). In a prime time loaded with grisly police procedurals, the old school Matlock is a not-at-all-guilty pleasure. --Donald Liebenson
All 24 first-season episodes--including the two-part "Diary of a Perfect Murder," "The Stripper," "The Cop," "The Rat Pack," "The People vs. Matlock," and "The Doctors"--are featured in a seven-disc set. 20 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo Surround. **24 episodes on 7 discs. 20 hrs.**

Here are some more information for Michelle Stafford:

As was noted in the previous article, age requirement for beginning mathematics with your child will be depended upon a few things: 1) your readiness to come up with creative ways to teach and command attention and; 2) your willingness to exercise patience and a loving attitude. Early childhood learning, whether its mathematics or reading, works best when abilities are allowed to unfold naturally and isn't hampered by the pressure of expectations one way or the other.
Below are practical tips for preparing your child's mind for basic mathematics. These exercises can work well with preschoolers as early as three. However, a child a little younger can also be instructed if the child demonstrates proficiency with the 1 - 10 counting sequence and exhibits an eagerness as well as a quickness for learning. It is essential to utilize good teaching practices particularly for children this age for optimal success.
Institute a routine to impress upon the child that these sessions will indeed become a part of his/her day. All in all, let your intention be to make this an exciting time to begin your child on a productive journey of learning experiences.
Tips for early preparation conducive for creating junior mathematicians:
o Build upon toddler activities of counting using fingers 1-10 by purchasing computer programs, DVDs, workbooks for toddlers - ages 2.5 through 4.
o Using other objects in your environment to count: apples, oranges, toys, etc. During car trips, count the number of a particular color of cars. Count the number of seconds between green and red lights. Do this throughout the day so that it becomes a habit! If the child is not receptive, (ill or temperamental) do not attempt to engage him/her. Remember to associate learning with the good feelings of fun and enthusiasm.
o After they have mastered counting 1 - 10 and are able to do it with ease, make a first attempt at teaching basic addition.
o Introduce basic addition as a new game! Grab a total of 4 oranges (or apples, etc.). Initially keep the sums to numbers under 5.
o Start with one orange. Place it in front of the child and ask him/her how many oranges he/she sees. Confirm pleasantly that it is ONE orange.
o Now grab another orange and state clearly that you will now add another orange. Place it a little apart from the first orange and then ask how many oranges are there? If the answer is TWO oranges - state that he/she is correct and reward with praise. Be sure to give hugs and kisses.
o Here is the important part of the exercise. Slowly enunciate how 1 orange PLUS 1 more orange equals 2 oranges! Get them to comprehend the concept - slowly, calmly and patiently. Never add a negative tone. If you do, the exercise becomes heavy and undesirable; possibly sabotaging a constructive attitude needed for future proficiency in math.
o Add additional oranges (or other fun objects) as learning capacity expands, gradually moving up to sums equal to five.
When complete mastery of basic addition has occurred now would be a good time to introduce workbooks (and other instructional tools) featuring basic addition. Once the child gives cues that he/she is ready to move on, subtraction beginning with differences under 5, could be a next step.
Just a few more suggestions, if the child has a hard time understanding the concept behind the word PLUS use a substitute like "add ___ more" and so on. The bottom line is to ensure that a basic understanding of addition takes place. Again, keep it fresh and fun by "adding" all kinds of things around the house. Ensure that it becomes a habit by doing it daily! Stop before the child tires of the "game" simply because it creates eagerness.
Research a good kindergarten curriculum to determine which concept to tackle next and don't hinder with superficial (i.e. age-appropriate curriculums) limits, especially if he/she is content and capable of learning it.
Bear in mind that with early childhood education, especially mathematics - consistency and progression is key!

Good News-Financial Aid To Accomplish A Degree Is Available From The Government
Attending college and continuing studies is the desire of many, but the main obstacle blocking their path is the college costs. Acquiring a degree pave ways to many benefits but lack of funds hinders their activities. However, financial aid available from the government is good news for many individuals desiring to become a degree holder.
The good news is that there are many resources to assist in meeting the college costs, but individuals in need have to read and learn more about it so that they understand the process to accomplish a degree for free. However, it is very important to know the college cost and the amount an individual will receive as aid. The amount given as aid is determined on the basis of income, investments and savings.
The federal government offers loans as well as grants to parents and students so that they pay for college costs. They are given this assistance so that their children do not suffer from lack of education. The Pell Grant is the main grant available to majority American students and they offer up to $4700 every year for your studies. This is a very beneficial grant as it need not be repaid, and is appropriate for families earning below $50,000 annually.
Perkins Loans are identical to the Pell Grants and are customized to suit students coming from families with low income. People qualifying for Perkins Loan receive up to $20,000 loan with a 5% fixed interest rate.
FAFSA is the pioneer treasure of state and federal financial assistance that is offering federal student aid. Students in need should apply for this financial package aid and acquire the benefit of education.
Majority students find it inevitable to continue their education without taking loans and Stafford Loans are found to be suitable as these loans are federally backed. They sanction up to $57,000 as loan for the entire college career and is worthy as they charge low interest rates being federally backed. The subsidized loans are available on meeting their eligibility requirements. Find out more on the internet for many more features of grants and loans.
