There's a fine line between being funny and being a joke. Thankfully, the debut album from Dethklok, the band at the core of Adult Swim's hit animated series Metalocalypse lands squarely in the former category. Performed by series co-creator Brendon Small (Tommy Blacha is Small's creative partner)--with a lot of help from metal drum legend Gene Hoglan (Death Angel, Strapping Young Lad)--songs such as "Birthday Dethday," "Face Fisted," and "Awaken" tap into the unapologetic musical brutality of death metal, while highlighting the often confusing ambiguity of the genre's lyrics. Progressive taxes ("Detharmonic"), the disappointment and seemingly endless cycle of higher education ("Go Forth and Die"), and the obligatory kiss-off to moist-palmed computer geeks who spew vitriol from the safety of Internet chat rooms ("Fansong"), provide the fodder for Small's hilarious, subtle, intelligent and highly quotable lyrics. Make no mistake: The Dethalbum isn't going to supplant your favorite At the Gates or Slayer recordings, but it will provide hours of amusement and joy--perhaps the very enemy of death metal itself, perhaps the very thing that makes Metalocalypse one of the funniest shows on cartoon TV these days and Dethklok the truest rock band since Spinal Tap. --Jedd Beaudoin

Dethklok is both a virtual death metal band featured in the animated program Metalocalpse, created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, and the virtual band created to perform the band'smusic in live shows. The band is sometimes cited as an example of "comedy rock" on par with bands such as GWAR andSpinal Tap. Metalocalypse centers on the exploits of the biggest, most metal-est band in the world, Dethklok. As the band goes about their daily affairs, the evil (well, more evil) Tribunal tries in vain to stopDethklok from expanding their empire. Each episode features a new song from the band - and now the best of those tracks have beenexpanded, re-recorded and put together with all new songs to make the Dethklok album fans havebeen clamoring for.

Mighty Dethklok returns this fall with The Dethalbum, the full length record Metalocalypse fans have been begging for. Premiering last year on Adult Swim, Metalocalypse centers around the exploits of the biggest, most metalest band in the world, Dethklok. As the band goes about their daily affairs, the evil (well, more evil) Tribunal tries in vain to stop Dethklok from expanding their empire. Each episode features a new song from the band and now the best of those tracks have been expanded, re-recorded and put together with all new songs to make the Dethklok album fans have been clamoring for. Prepare for an onslaught of bone-crunching Nordic riffs that will force you to your knees. The Metalocalypse has begun.

Metalocalypse: Season Three Metalocalypse: Season Three
List Price: $29.98
Sale Price: $20.92

The third season of Metalocalypse, the animated comedy-music series about the world's most popular death metal band, proves the old axiom that bigger is better by doubling the running time of each episode while retaining its signature blend of gonzo humor and rock culture parody. Expanding the show's length might have caused Metalocalypse's juggling act, which tackles music biz clichés, gross-out gags, conspiracy plot lines, and absurdist scenarios (often in the same episode), to fall flat, but instead, the third season allows for more involved and outlandish stories, as well as more insight into the characters. Not that Nathan Explosion, Pickles the drummer, William Murderface, and the rest of Dethklok are the deepest of fellows, but the longer running time gives audiences a chance to explore their more sensitive sides, such as guitarist Toki Wartooth's attempt to find a meaningful relationship ("Fertilityklok") or axeman Skwisgaar Swigelf's search for his Swedish roots ("Fatherklok"). Meanwhile, Murderface pursues his own Christmas special ("Dethmas"), Dr. Rockso continues his downward spiral into oblivion ("Dethzazz"), and there's the matter of manager Charles Foster Offdensen, who returns from an apparent death at the end of the second season to put Dethklok into the path of World War III in the season finale, "Doublebookedklok." In short, it's the usual Metalocalypse lunacy, but more of it. Extras on the two-disc season-three set are unfortunately limited to 50 minutes of deleted scenes that, while fitfully amusing, don't make up for the lack of more substantive material. Easter eggs abound throughout the set, including a clip of the infamous recording of Nathan Explosion reading Shakespeare. --Paul Gaita

Black metal fans, fear not--the men of Dethklok have returned to make your world a little darker (and funnier) with Season 2 of the animated series Metalocalypse. Though the show is as densely plotted--often to absurd levels--as any Adult Swim program, and riddled with inside references to the metal scene (from which spring many of the guest vocal talents, including members of Metallica, Dimmu Borgir and Arch Enemy), one doesn't have to be a fan of either to enjoy the show. It does help, however, to have an appreciation for dark humor, as the season opener, "Dethecution" illustrates; having survived the near-fatal attack by their nemeses, a military cabal called the Tribunal, Dethklok decides to return to public life by giving a concert that doubles as a mass execution for 200 death-row inmates. Dramatic changes like this--and the mayhem that follows them--are the crux of Metalocalypse's second season, and include guitarist Toki taking lessons from an ancient master to up his value to the band ("Dethlessons"), an ill-advised trip to the Amazon in search of hallucinogenic drugs (a terrific Herzog spoof titled--what else?-- "Dethcarraldo"), drummer Pickles' disastrous reunion with his former flash metal band (the two-part "Snakes 'N Barrels), and the cliffhanger conclusion, which finds Dethklok releasing its latest album at the same time the former fans-turned-terrorists known as the Revengencers launch an all-out assault on them ("Dethrelease"). Burning questions in regard to the origins of the buffoonish Dr. Rockso and Nathan's love life are also addressed, and fans get a deeper glimpse into the band's lunatic lives, most notably in the hilarious "Dethwedding," which introduces Pickles' deadbeat brother Seth. Again, enjoyment of the show is entirely dependent on one's tolerance for absurd and often crude humor, but its lampooning of rock excess remains as sharply focused as ever. As with the first season set, the extras are strewn about the two-disc set in the form of Easter Eggs, though they're not particularly hard to find on the main and episode selection menus. Once located, fans will find everything from extended scenes and videos for "Mermaider" and "Bloodrocuted" to clips of the band reading excerpts from Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus" or simply listing other metal outfits they like. Each are clever in their own way, and do much to underscore Metalocalypse's party-till-you-explode aesthetic. --Paul Gaita

Metalocalypse Dethklok

Born In Dallas, Texas on August 31, 1967, Gene Holgan is known for his creative drum arrangements. He bought his first drum kit at the age of 14 and actually taught himself without any outside help whatsoever. Kiss and Rush were his favorite bands to jam with while he was first learning the drums, it actually helped him become the drummer he is today. He got his first experience on the road with the band Slayer, he was a lights engineer, basically a roadie. He played drums during the sound-checks before each concert. At this same point in time, he was a part of a smalltime band known as War God.

After his experience with Slayer, he was invited to join Dark Angel as their drummer. This was not where his fame came from though. In the 1990s he ended up playing with Death at the same time as Chuck Schuldiner was redirecting the band to a more progressive style of music. He played with them for a few years, giving him enough experience and fame to move on to a series of other big projects. He played drums for Testament in the recording of one of their albums, which is when he met up with Devin Townsend, forging a long lasting friendship. He recorded many albums with Townsend, including those by Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend himself.

In 2004 Holgan filled in for Opeth's drummer Martin Lopez during the band's Lamentations tour. He only played one show with them in Vancouver, British Columbia, but it was said to be a fantastic show. A year later, he filled in for Lopez once again. Lopez had a history with panic attacks, being the reason that he needed fill-ins on both occasions. At this point Holgan played two shows in a night, one with Opeth and then later that night with Strapping Young Lad, a busy day indeed. Opeth also asked Holgan to record a music video with them, which he did. He appears in the music video "The Grand Conjuration."

Among other bands that he has worked with as a session drummer, Old Man's Child and Daemon were some of his best works in the black metal genre. He has done additional production work for bands as well. While he has accepted many jobs, he has also turned down anyone who did not fit his own style of music.

Currently, Holgan is working with Dethklok, or more specifically, Brenden Small. Brenden literally composes all of the music for the animated TV show Metalocalypse. Holgan plays the drums for all of Dethklok's recordings, so obviously he is featured in the debut album entitled "The Dethalbum". This was released back in 2007, then shortly after he actually toured in support of the album with other musicians taking the roles of the made up band members. He also recorded the second album for Dethklok which was subsequently entitled "Dethalbum II."

Gene Holgan is typically a metal drummer, one of the best in the business. Even in Strapping Young Lad he demonstrates his love for metal drumming. He is definitely one of the best metal drummers of all time.

Popular Adult Cartoons

Adults love their cartoons as much as kids do. The allure lies in the witty repartee, absurd situations and social relevance that many of these shows offer to its audience.

Adults love their cartoons as much as kids do. The allure lies in the witty repartee, absurd situations and social relevance that many of these shows offer to its audience.

The following are just a few of the many popular for-adult cartoons shown on television.

The Simpsons
Probably the most iconic cartoons depicting the American suburban experience, The Simpsons is shown on the Fox Broadcasting Network since 1989 to date.  Its main characters are Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie with supporting characters from the fictional Springfield City including Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders and Chief Wiggam, to name few.

If there is one cartoon show that explores, parodies and satirizes the working-class American lifestyle and the families who live them like no other before it and probably after it, then The Simpsons is that show.

  • It makes fun of everything that the American people holds dear without ruffling too many feathers from the culture to the clothes as well as aspects of the human condition in general.  And, yes, Homer likes to ruin a good thing more than he probably loves his wife.

South Park
Just around the block for a decade now, South Park is wildly popular across many demographics.

  • Nobody is immune from its satirical, surreal and crude humor from the US President himself to Hollywood celebrities to Jane Does.
  • At present, the deliverers of such fun are four children, namely, Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick.  It is Cartman, however, with his nasty plans who rules the roost.

King of the Hill
"That kid ain't right" This line just about sums up the relationship between Hank Hill and his son, Bob.  Where Hank is emotionally repressed save for his affection with his aging bloodhound, Bob is expressive about his passions even if these are seen as traditional feminine roles - cooking, dolls and high fashion.

  • Aside from parent-child relationships, other themes explored are loyalty, friendship, and justice as set in a typical American town.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force
With an unlikely cult following, Aqua Teen Hunger Force is as popular as four anthropomorphic fast food items can probably ever get on television.

  • The show's creators have abandoned the structure, scripts and continuity of storylines in favor of improvised dialogues that are neither here nor there, absurd visual gags placing the main characters in bizarre scenarios, and stories involving aliens and monsters not relevant to the situation in the first place.
  • Despite all these unorthodox approach, the show continues to gain a following.

The Family Guy
If there is one cartoon character that can beat Homer Simpson at the game of being fat, dumb, lazy and crude, then it is Peter MacFarlane.

  • His family consists of wife Lois, their children Meg, Chris, and Stewie and the requisite anthropomorphic dog Brian, all of whom lives in Quahog, Rhode Island.
  • It also parodies American society, culture and many aspects of the human condition as a whole with a diabolical, intellectual and diaper-clad baby added to the dysfunctional mix.

Metalocalypse
As a depiction of a commercially successful American-Scandinavian death metal band known as Dethklok, Metalocalypse is both a parody and a celebration of the subculture.

  • Its contents are truly for-adults only with themes like violence and death as well as the stereotypical drugs, sex and rock n' roll aspect of being in a band.
