Another great place to shop for Mel Brooks products is Amazon. They have more than just books! Here are some more information for Mel Brooks: Sometimes, a man needs to hang out with his buddies, drink a few beers, talk about women or sports (or both), and watch a couple of movies. In the latter case, there are certain films made to cater specifically to the male demographic, and women would either find them stupid or offensive in the extreme. These are only movies for guys, cinematic works devoted to upping your testosterone level while simultaneously killing off a few brain cells. The next time you and your buddies head to the video store, give one of these machismo-laden gems a look. Slap Shot (1977) - Paul Newman is Reggie Dunlop, the player-coach of the fictional Charlestown Chiefs minor league hockey franchise. With the town falling down around them and the team scheduled to be dismantled at the end of the season, Reggie decides to take a different strategy and resort to the most violent tactics possible. This proves to be a big hit with the fans, especially when the childlike-yet-brutal Hanson Brothers take the ice. An oddball movie filled with fighting, drinking, and gratuitous nudity. In other words, one of the ultimate guy movies. The Wild Bunch (1969) - When it came to on-screen violence, director Sam Peckinpah didn't fool around. This Western about a gang of aging outlaws heading into Mexico is a perfect example. Whether they're tossing dynamite at one another, gunning down unfaithful ex-girlfriends, or killing half of Mexico with a Gatling gun, The Wild Bunch is bound to have you pounding on your chest like an alpha male. Starring William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Warren Oates, and Ben Johnson. The Longest Yard (1974) - Burt Reynolds stars as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, a former NFL great who was kicked out of the league for shaving points. Sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing his girlfriend's car, he's forced into assembling a team of convicts to play against the guards. Hilarity ensues, with broken bones, footballs to the groin, and some of the most oddball players to ever set foot on the gridiron. Eddie Albert is great as the football-obsessed prison warder, and other familiar faces include Bernadette Peters, James Hampton, Richard Kiel, and NFL great Ray Nitschke. This is Spinal Tap (1984) - Rob Reiner directed this groundbreaking comedy that first popularized the concept of the "mockumentary." The film follows the misadventures of the rock group Spinal Tap (Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer) as they hit the road to promote their new album, Smell the Glove. Along the way, they'll have to deal with one hilarious problem after another, including a manipulative groupie, drummers who constantly die, and a less-than-impressive model of Stonehenge. Blazing Saddles (1974) - Mel Brooks spoofs the Western genre in this tale about a newly-appointed black sheriff (Cleavon Little) who must protect the citizens of Rock Ridge from the schemes of the comically slimy Hedley Lamarr (Harvey Korman). Pitted against bushwhackers, a German seductress-for-hire (Madeline Kahn), and the generally racist attitude of the townsfolk, the sheriff appears to be in over his head. Luckily, he befriends a drunken gunslinger by the name of The Waco Kid (Gene Wilder), and the two concoct an elaborate scheme to save the town and put one over on the villain. Also starring Mel Brooks, Slim Pickens, and Dom DeLuise. Robocop (1987) - Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is an honest cop patrolling the mean streets of a dystopian Detroit. When he's murdered by a gang of criminals (led by Kurtwood Smith in a breakout role), his body is retrieved and turned into a cyborg officer by the unethical executives at Omni Consumer Products. Haunted by memories of his past life, RoboCop goes about cleaning up the city, and he gets plenty of help from his former partner (Nancy Allen) and a really big pistol. Directed by Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Starship Troopers). While this list of only movies for guys features some of my personal favorites, there are plenty of other selections available. Sports movies are especially popular, and don't forget about action films from the 1980s starring men like Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Sometimes, it's great to be a guy. One of the biggest news items to hit the theater scene in recent years is the fact that Young Frankenstein tickets are soon going to be available for one of the most highly-anticipated on-stage productions in many years. This classic cult film was loyally followed by its legions of fans, and the forthcoming Broadway production is sure to attract the same level of interest. Below is a synopsis of the plot that will be on display soon. The History of the Story Young Frankenstein was a film that was originally released in 1974, and the original screenplay was written by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder. Wilder joined the likes of Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, and Gene Hackman in the all-star cast, and the film has constantly been ranked by different entities as one of the funniest ever produced. The film still enjoys a wide following more than 30 years later, and as a result of this continued interest, Brooks decided in early 2006 to begin to adapt the story into an on-stage production. Brooks has said several times that Young Frankenstein was his greatest work, and he collaborated with Thomas Meehan, with whom he partnered on The Producers, to formulate the new script. After completing this process, it was announced that Young Frankenstein tickets will be available for shows to begin in late 2007. The Plot Summarized The story is basically a respectful parody of the horror film genre, particularly to the style and substance of horror films produced in the 1930's. The main character is Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, and he is a renowned lecturer at a medical school. Dr. Frankenstein is very sensitive in regards to his family history, as his grandfather was widely known as a "mad scientist." After one of Dr. Frankenstein's lectures, a solicitor approaches the doctor and tells him that he's just inherited a large sum of money, and convinces Dr. Frankenstein to travel to Transylvania to assess whether a project the solicitor has in mind is worth the time and effort. We'd tell you how the story turns out, but there are two reasons why we won't. First, the story is a timeless classic, and millions of people have already enjoyed this story in many forms. Secondly, you'd be much better served to grab some Young Frankenstein tickets for yourself in order to see the next great Broadway phenomenon.
