Last month the hospital I have been employed by for almost 13 years laid off our entire department with less than 3 weeks notice. This after promising only some would be let go and those people would receive a severance package. Many people in the department had been with the hospital close to and even over 20 years. Even our direct management was told only seconds before the staff meeting in which this was announced.

For several years now, I have wanted to quit, but was married to the paycheck. We were transcriptionists and paid mainly for production and the better you were of course, the more you were paid. Yours truly wasn't about to quit, especially in these economic times. There is the saying about being careful what you wish for, right? On one hand, I'm glad to no longer be working for either my department management or the hospital. Yet, finding a job in the town I live is proving to be nearly impossible and the companies to whom I've sent resumes for transcription work have replied that they have no positions available in my specialty.

In the weeks that have followed the layoffs, I have experienced the full gamut of emotions ranging from crying bouts to sheer joy. Terrified that I won't find work but at the same time, absolutely thrilled to be free for the pursuit of my own goals. Often, I have to make myself stop and think that at least there is no outstanding debt, I'm healthy, and my husband not only has a decent job, but is also supportive of me pursuing my dreams.

Even though crying often times gives me a headache, and probably you too, it is natural in stressful times (and happy times for that matter). It is an internal cleanser - so long as you don't cry all the time. There is nothing wrong with it. Go ahead and cry, get it out of your system. After the crying, begin focusing on what is important to you. If you have a spouse who can financially carry the household, go after something you have always dreamed of doing, whether it is a completely different career, home based business, schooling, or more time with your family. Think of this as an opportunity many people don't have. Focus and make something of your new circumstance. Make a routine, a schedule, whatever structure it is that gets you moving. Just don't sit around in your pajamas all day watching television and eating bonbons. You will only make yourself ill and sink into a depression. At the very least, get outside and take a walk or a bike ride, something physical - you would be surprised at what can inspire and lift you up.

Three weeks have passed since my layoff and though I still have my down moments, I have my goals. Every day I go outside and putter in the garden. Every day brings me closer to my dreams.
