The relationship of the two vixens was further damaged by the fact that Blair's boyfriend, Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) has feelings for Serena. In the course of the story, it appears that Serena slept with Nate which became the reason for her sudden exodus from the elite community.

Being trapped in his relationship with Blair, being constantly manipulated by his family, and not being able to be with the woman he loves, Nate grew up with much angst against the society he lives in. Nate's hatred is to be compounded by his childhood friend's, Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), influence. Chuck is a manipulative and morally corrupt spoiled rich kid who would not bat an eyelash about abusing others to satisfy his own needs. Despite his nature, he has a soft spot for his best friend, Nate, and Blair. Later in the season, Chuck would realize that he has feelings for Blair.

When Serena comes back from her self-imposed exile, she finds herself an outcast in the privileged society she used to rule. Instead of welcoming arms from friends, she received dagger looks of betrayal from people who were once her allies. In the midst of teenage rivalry, she soon finds a friend in Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), son of a former rock star turned gallery owner, Rufus Humphrey (Matthew Settle). Dan and his younger sister Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) face an enormous challenge to fit in to their new elite environment. To make matters more complicated in the Upper East Side of New York, Rufus once had an affair with Serena's mother, socialite Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford), who was once a groupie.

Gossip Girl is a fun drama TV series based on the novel series of the same name written by Cecily von Ziegesar and published by Little, Brown and Company, a subsidiary of the Hachette Group.

The first novel, Gossip Girl, was released in April 2002; the eleventh and final novel of the series was released in May 2007, with a prequel novel following in October 2007.

The original novel became the inspiration for the Gossip Girl teen drama television series, created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, which premiered on The CW on September 19, 2007.

In the show, Blake Lively plays Serena, Leighton Meester plays Blair, Chace Crawford plays Nate, Penn Badgley plays Dan, Ed Westwick plays Chuck, Taylor Momsen plays Jenny and Jessica Szohr plays Vanessa. The show is based on the books but does not follow the same story line. However, there are some key characters, such as Aaron Rose or the Lord, that are introduced into the show, as in the books, but with a different storyline.

The series revolves around the lives of privileged teenagers attending an elite private school in New York City's Upper East Side.  They may live privileged lives, but someone amongst their group is always busy blogging about their dirty little secrets - the problem is they don't know who has been betraying them.

Every episode begins with the blog page of the Gossip Girl's blog with Serena's picture from the pilot episode. Afterwards a recap of events relevant to the upcoming narrative is shown, which ends again with the blog page, only this time with a picture from other character(s) with a text about a recent event connected with the picture.

The narrator is always the Gossip Girl, voiced by Kristen Bell. She begins the recap with the sentence: "Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite.", and usually ends the episode with "X.o.X.o Gossip Girl". The pilot episode is designed as the whole storyline is guided by Gossip Girl. The scenes are switched fast and Gossip Girl adds comments all the time.

However in the later episodes, often Gossip Girl tells literary quotes and doesn't involve in the conversations of the characters with dirty and juicy comments. Also, excluding the movement of the storyline in the pilot and the first couple of episodes the rest of the episodes follow the regular movement. For example in the first episodes Gossip Girl used to say: I wonder what she is doing or let's see what he is doing and the scenes would fast move to the mentioned character.

Gossip Girl initially received mixed reviews. Due to the show's pedigree as an adaptation of the New York Times bestselling novel series, the show was considered to be one of the more anticipated new shows of the 2007-2008 television seasons.  The Parents Television Council has had many problems with Gossip Girl over the years.  In Season 1, for the underage drinking, drugs, and sex. Although it was milder in Season 2, the ads and the campaign to promote season 2 sparked much controversy. The campaign involved pictures of four of the main characters in controversial poses. The PTC's response to season 3 was stronger than ever. The ninth episode of the season included a sexual threesome that lasted through the 10th episode via a series of flashbacks. The PTC said this was, "irresponsible and reckless"
