They say patience is a virtue. But if you're married it's basically the life blood of your relationship. If you don't learn to accept change when your spouse changes you are in for a bumpy ride. The fact that patience plays a big role in these mini-changes in our lives is an understatement. Through the years the way that we deal with each other will have to adapt to your spouse who is developing and growing right before your eyes.

When I had my first son everyone told me that I was going to gain a level of patience due to the fact they will try your patience. And yes it was great advice because I constantly have to remind myself to be patient, which in itself is the patience they were talking about. How can I keep my marriage? When everyone was giving advice on how to make it through marriage, why wasn't the same advice of having patience given?

Just like a child we all go through life constantly learning. Over the years I've come to realize I will go through life learning new ways to keep my marriage healthy. Maya Angelou said when you know better you do better. With that said then naturally once we learn anything new we change just that little bit. But this little bit of change can cause such a significant difference in the way your spouse perceives how you behave now or how you may react to a situation differently.

Change is good. It is definite evidence that we are learning in this life of ours instead of taking up space accomplishing nothing in this life. Change can also be threatening to a loved one who shares intimate life with us. It makes them consider if they are on the same level or at the same rate of change in life that you are. If they don't think they are, they can react in a way that seems strange to you. Yes, this is the person you care for. But when resentment enters a picture then a person can revert back to the child who is angry or upset that they aren't keeping up.

The human ego can be fragile if not stroked. One of the ways that can leave an ego bruised is one of the partners finishing an accomplishment in their life like graduating from school. If they witnessed this milestone in your life from start to finish it can have your spouse questioning if you are outgrowing them. It also could cause them to feel pressure to come up to a certain level in their life that they feel you are at in yours.

They are saying to themselves I want to keep my marriage because it's all human ego thinking and has no bases in the reality of the situation. Maybe this is why they haven't talked about these feelings with you. It's hard for a mature adult to admit to themselves that they feel that you think you're better than them. So as a mature adult we choose not to say anything and try to work through this nonsense in our head. If we aren't successful with that than our true feelings will ooze out in possibly disruptive, life changing ways.

Benjamin Banneker: Benjamin Banneker is an African American astronomer, mathematician, surveyor, almanac author and farmer. Banneker's life is inspirational. Despite the popular prejudices of his times, the man was quite unwilling to let his race or his age hinder in any way his thirst for intellectual development.

Dr. George Washington Carver: one of the great scientist, botanist, educator and inventor transforming southern agriculture. He discovered hundreds of uses for the peanut, the sweet potato, and the soybean and thus stimulated the culture of these crops. He devised many products from cotton waste and extracted blue, purple, and red pigments from local clay.

W.E.B. DuBois: An African American educator, author, historian, sociologist, philosopher, poet, and leader. Besides being one of the founders of the NAACP, he was the very first African American to receive a doctoral degree from Harvard University.

Marian Anderson: First African American Opera singer was well known for her extraordinary contralto voice. . She was the first African American to be named a permanent member of the Metropolitan Opera Company, as well as the first to perform at the White House

Maya Angelou: A world famous poet, author, historian singer and civil rights activist. This Grammy and Horatio Alger award winner was raised in segregated rural Arkansas.

Jesse Owens: He was a track and field athlete who won four gold medals in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Influenced by principles and practices of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. he took the role of Defense.

B.B King: The guitarist B.B. King has been called the undisputed King of the Blues.

Les McCann: The legendary godfather of contemporary soul-jazz is known for his smooth and funky spontaneity.

Toni Morrison : Famous author of such works as "Beloved", "The Bluest Eye", "Song of Solomon", "Tar baby", and many other great works. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993.
