Blood and Belief: The Circulation of a Symbol between Jews and Christians (S. Mark Taper Foundation Imprint in Jewish Studies)
List Price: $39.95

Blood contains extraordinary symbolic power in both Judaism and Christianity--as the blood of sacrifice, of Jesus, of the Jewish martyrs, of menstruation, and more. Yet, though they share the same literary, cultural, and religious origins, on the question of blood the two religions have followed quite different trajectories. For instance, while Judaism rejects the eating or drinking of blood, Christianity mandates its symbolic consumption as a central sacrament. How did these two traditions, both originating in the Hebrew Bible's cult of blood sacrifices, veer off in such different directions? With his characteristic wit and erudition, David Biale traces the continuing, changing, and often clashing roles of blood as both symbol and substance through the entire sweep of Jewish and Christian history from Biblical times to the present.

Who Are the Jews of India?
List Price: $60.00
Sale Price: $59.97

Of all the Diaspora communities, the Jews of India are among the least known and most interesting. This readable study, full of vivid details of everyday life, looks in depth at the religious life of the Jewish community in Cochin, the Bene Israel from the remote Konkan coast near Bombay, and the Baghdadi Jews, who migrated to Indian port cities and flourished under the British Raj. Who Are the Jews of India? is the first integrated, comprehensive work available on all three of India's Jewish communities. Using an interdisciplinary approach, Nathan Katz brings together methods and insights from religious studies, ritual studies, anthropology, history, linguistics, and folklore, as he discusses the strategies each community developed to maintain its Jewish identity. Based on extensive fieldwork throughout India, as well as close reading of historical documents, this study provides a striking new understanding of the Jewish Diaspora and of Hindu civilization as a whole.

Sliding to the Right: The Contest for the Future of American Jewish Orthodoxy (S. Mark Taper Foundation Book in Jewish Studies)
List Price: $28.95
Sale Price: $23.35

|
|
Written by one of this country's leading experts on American Judaism, this book offers a snapshot of Orthodoxy Jewry in the United States, asking how the community has evolved in the years since World War II and where it is headed in the future. Incorporating rich details of everyday life, fine-grained observations of cultural practices, descriptions of educational institutions, and more, Samuel Heilman delineates the varieties of Jewish Orthodox groups, focusing in particular on the contest between the proudly parochial, contra-acculturative haredi Orthodoxy and the accomodationist modern Orthodoxy over the future of this religious community. What emerges overall is a picture of an Orthodox Jewry that has gained both in numbers and intensity and that has moved farther to the religious right as it struggles to define itself and to maintain age-old traditions in the midst of modernity, secularization, technological advances, and the pervasiveness of contemporary American culture.

Created in a blend of fashion and class, this Stuhrling timepiece exhibits a bold style that adds flare to your collection.
The Targa Florio is an open road endurance automobile race held near Palermo, Sicily. Always one of the toughest competitions in Europe and considered to be one of the most grueling challenges for driver and car, the first Targa Florio held in 1906 covered 277 miles through multiple hairpin curves on treacherous mountain roads at heights where severe changes in climate frequently occurred. By the mid-1920s, the Targa Florio had become one of Europe's most important races as neither the 24 Hours of Le Mans nor the Mille Miglia had been established yet. Since the inception of the automobile, there has been a fascination amongst their creators and devotees with pitting them against each other in a race. And over the years, many a watchmaker has dedicated their timepieces to the romance of this pastime. In honor of the Centennial Celebration of one of the first known organized auto races, Stührling Original has entered the race with its Targa Series! On the heels of the success created by the initial models in the series comes the newest editions for 2008, the Targa 24 and Targa 24 Pro. Targa means “shield” and these eye-opening Stührling Original timepieces are large enough to be a shield! At a whopping 47 millimeters round and 53mm east to west including the crown, the Targa’s own the largest case in Stührling Original’s history. In keeping with the extraordinary demands of the race by the same name, every aspect of the Targa has been given consideration for durability, toughness and precision of engineering. Beginning with its engine, the Targa 24’s are fitted with the one of the most reliable chronograph movements available in watch-making: the Citizen-Miyota OS20. One of the most reliable quartz movements, this engine features a center-stop seconds hand, 60-minute sub-dial (at the nine o’clock position), a twenty-four hour indicator (sub-dial at three o’clock position), and a quick-set date complication (at the six o’clock position)! Just like the motor cars that compete in the race, the Targa 24’s engine is well protected. This extraordinary timepiece is safeguarded with a casing that is milled from solid 316L surgical grade stainless steel and a massive domed Krysterna™ crystal. With origins in the eyewear industry, Krysterna™ makes for the most shatterproof material available for use as “crystals” in the timepiece industry today; and in keeping with its motif of reliability and durability, only the best for this contrivance will do! Of course to be a true Stührling Original, there must also be noticeable attention given to detail and styling, and the Targa 24’s clearly pass that test! Beginning with its magnificent face which looks like something right out of an instrument panel from a race-car, the dial of the Targa 24’s have been hydraulically pressed more than twenty times to create multiple levels, a concentric circle design on the sub-dials and around the circumference of the inner dial (to create a subliminal look of instrumentation). The baton hour markers are all individually applied with two pegs each going through the dial and being sealed on the backside. Those batons have been treated with a mirror, high-polish finish to refract any light that it catches for that extra spark that can be seen at a glance. The minute markers as well as all of the indices on the sub-dials have been printed with a special lapping technique to ensure their permanence, and the same technique has been employed for the tachymeter on the flange. Talk about your styling, probably the first thing that anyone will notice at first glance is the intricate bezel-work. Framing this enormous machine is the striking “kris” cut mill-work on the bezel! Complementing the overall look of instrumentation are the ideal conical-shaped pushers on the right side of the case which flank (top and bottom) the guard rails for the knurled edge crown. On the flipside, the Targa 24’s are handsomely completed with a decorated screwed-in case-back. Featuring a dodecagonal step-design and the Stührling Original signature logo, the case-back is also made from 316L surgical grade stainless steel. The Targa 24 is mounted on an amply padded 24-millimeter wide genuine leather strap with a water repellant lining; while the final touch for the Targa 24 Pro is the boss stainless steel (316L) link bracelet. Fully integrated to the case, the five row parallelogram links form a bracelet that is 24 millimeters wide at the point of integration and tapers down to 20mm at the clasp. The precision of the engineering is unmistakably present on the custom bracelet as the links are all individually molded and held together with pins. And while the links are a significant 3.7mm thick, they sport all rounded edges and corners, and in their assembled state make a for a surprisingly fluid wrist adornment. To your mark, get set….GO…for the Targa!

Radio Golf Broadway Show is not Just an Entertainer
An ambitious lawyer and the inheritor of real estate property, Harmond Wilks, has the dream of redeveloping African American Hill District in Pittsburgh. He wants to convert the neighborhood that’s in shambles into a sophisticated area with a high rise building and a chain of stores. He teams up with his friend Roosevelt Hicks, who has recently been appointed as the vice president of Mellon Bank. Both plan a redevelopment project.
During this time, Wilks decides to stand as a candidate for the post of the Mayor of Pittsburgh. But, when some dark secrets are revealed from an old mansion at Wylie, Harmond’s dreams of redevelopment and becoming a Mayor get hit badly. Will he be able to become the first black mayor of Pittsburgh? Will he be able to transform his neighborhood? Or will his black past shatter his dreams and haunt him forever?
“Radio Golf” is all about community development. It’s a story that reminds you about the responsibility of each citizen towards his community. August Wilson, in his play, wants to tell his audience that transformation of neighborhood can be achieved only when someone cares enough to take the initiative to do something about it. Once someone starts, others will follow.
“Radio Golf” is the last sequence of Wilson’s 10-play cycle, which he wrote after every decade. August Wilson has won the Pulitzer Prize and has a deep insight into African American lifestyle.
“Radio Golf” is produced by Margo Lion, Jujamcyn Theaters, Jeffrey Richards/Jerry Frankel, Fran Kirmser, Tamara Tunie, Lauren Doll, Bunting Management Group, Wonder City, Georgia Fontiere/Open Pictures, Inc. /Townsend League, Gordon Davidson, and Jack Viertel.
David Gallo, Tony Award winner, has created the sets; Susan Hiferty, who is also a Tony Award winner, has designed the costumes; Donald Holder, again a Tony Award winner, has done the lighting arrangements; and Dan Moses Schreier has given the sound effects for the play.
“Radio Golf” has humor; it has thrill and suspense; it shows the ambition of a person and how one’s past can create a conflict in one’s present life.
It is not just any other Broadway show, but a part of Wilson’s research in the African American culture. It gives a reflection of the 20th century and also tells about how fleets of ship loaded with African slaves used to dock at Virginia.
“Radio Golf” was premiered at Yale Repertory Theater in 2005. Thereafter, it was shown at the West Coast in Los Angeles, California by Mark Taper Forum. The show was produced in October 2006 by the Huntington Theater Company situated in Boston. It was again produced in 2007 by McCarter Theater. On May 8, 2007, “Radio Golf” was presented as a Broadway show in New York’s Cort Theater.
The show is a must-see, as it not only entertains, but also sends a message across the people that community will always remain at the top of the development agenda.
So, book your tickets now itself, either online, or on phone, or at the box office and have a taste of African American culture.
