Inspired by the popular 1980s Nintendo game, The Legend of Zelda: The Complete Animated Series contains 13 enjoyable, self-deprecating adventures featuring haughty Princess Zelda and her frustrated, would-be suitor and courageous ally, Link. Guardians of the Triforce of Wisdom, a powerful object that sits, curiously unguarded, in Zelda's castle, the stuck-up princess and grousing Link are forever fending off assaults by the evil Ganon, a sort of underworld demon. Ganon wants the Triforce of Wisdom because he possesses a similar Triforce--together, the magical items would make him all-powerful. While there's a lot of sword-and-sorcery action, the tone of Legend of Zelda's short pieces is unmistakably comic, driven by a constant and unrelieved romantic tension between the two leads. Link is constantly saving Zelda's hide, ever-hopeful of a kiss, while Zelda keeps him on tenterhooks, leading him right to the brink of satisfaction and then…well, maybe next time. Among the best episodes is "The White Knight," in which Zelda's infatuation with a vain, preening demon-slayer sends an irritated Link packing—until the interloper refuses to rescue Zelda because he might get his clothes dirty. Originally broadcast as part of the "Super Mario Bros. Super Show," this action-packed animated adaptation of the wildly popular Nintendo game follows the adventures of Link and Princess Zelda, who fight to save everyone in the town of Hyrule from the wicked Ganon, who wants to obtain control of the Triforce of Wisdom. All 13 episodes from the series--including "The Ringer," "The White Knight," "That Sinking Feeling," "Stinging a Stinger," and "The Moblins Are Revolting"--are featured in a three-disc set. 3 1/2 hrs. total. One of the most anticipated animated DVD releases of 2007, the four-disc set of Captain N The Game Master compiles the majority of the animated action-adventure series (which ran from 1989-1991) that was inspired by the popular Nintendo game system. The premise of the show concerns average California teen and Nintendo fan Kevin Keene and his faithful dog Lucky, who are both pulled into their game system to Videoland, an animated world populated by heroes and villains from various Nintendo games. There, Kevin must assist the N Team--a group formed by Princess Lana, Icarus (from "Kid Icarus"), Simon Belmont (from "Castlevania") and Mega Man (from the game of the same name)--in defeating Mother Brain (from "Metroid") and her henchmen from conquering Videoland. The 26 episodes contained here pit Kevin and the team against the dragons from "Dragon's Den" ("Three Men and a Dragon"), a troublesome Gameboy ("Gameboy), and countless other nefarious types, including Dr. Wily ("Mega Man"), King Hippo ("Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!"), and Donkey Kong himself, whose allegiances shift from episode to episode. Animation is as spotty as most late '80s-early '90s TV cartoons tend to be, but the nostalgia factor for viewers of a certain age who recall their Nintendo systems with fondness should help to overcome this minor setback. The history of Captain N is a convoluted one, despite its brief network run; while earning respectable ratings, the show was partnered with an animated Super Mario Brothers cartoon (which aired as Captain N and The Adventures of Super Mario Brothers 3) before being edited down to a supporting role in its own series and finally giving up the ghost in 1991. Due to its varying lengths and formats, the episodes contained here are only from the first and second season (and for the latter, the Super Mario Brothers portions have been removed). Nothing from the truncated, seven-episode Season 3 is included, which may be a stumbling block for dedicated fans. Extras are somewhat limited as well; thumbnail bios for each of the main characters are spread across the four discs, but little is given about their creation and development in the series. Similarly, the "Exploring Videoland" interactive featurette is a simple gallery of images from the various locations within Videoland. More interesting to the hardcore devotee will be the original cartoon from Nintendo Power magazine that provided the inspiration for the series, which rounds out the supplemental features. -- Paul Gaita

Kevin Keene a teenager from Northridge California is brought to another universe known as Videoland along with his dog Duke to defeat the evil villainess Mother Brain. Mother Brain is trying to conquer Videoland. Kevin has been brought to defeat her as foretold in an Ancient Prophecy. Kevin is given the title "Captain N: The Game Master". He and Duke join the N Team which consists of Princess Lana (the Ruler of Videoland) Simon Belmont (the hero from Castlevania) Mega Man Kid Icarus and Gameboy (a giant supercomputer). The N Team goes up against the evil Mother Brain (the villain from Metroid) and her minions King Hippo (Punch-Out) the Eggplant Wizard (Kid Icarus) and Dr. Wily (Mega Man).
