Barbra Streisand: Guilty
List Price: $18.98
Sale Price: $13.71

Guilty may well be Barbra Streisand's best pop album. At the peak of her late-'70s popularity, she hooked up with the Bee Gees' Barry Gibb, who himself was basking in his Saturday Night Fever glow. Gibb wrote and produced most of the material on 1980's Guilty, and he supplied background vocals as well as co-leads on two tracks. The results are still completely bewitching. "Promises," for instance, is a lounge-like dance number and Babs sounds simply fabulous--sexy, lighthearted, passionate, playful--all at once. "Life Story" is a wild epic, and "Make It Like a Memory" keeps soaring up and up into a stratosphere of shag-carpeted luxury. Even Gibb's wavering vocals are great--and not a little like a disco version of Mandy Patinkin. And of course, the hits are out of this world: "Woman in Love" and "What Kind of Fool" are titanium-plated classics the likes of which Streisand has not topped since. A guilty pleasure, sure--just indulge. --Elisabeth Vincentelli NOTE: This 25th-anniversary edition reissue includes: CD AUDIO SIDE: Entire Album DVD SIDE: Entire album in Enhanced LPCM Stereo; video programming includes: interview with Barbra and Barry on the recording of Guilty filmed in June 2005; a video performance of one of the songs from the new album Guilty Pleasures; included exclusively on this disc as a preview; "Guilty" live from the TV special "One Voice"; a photo gallery with outtakes from the original Mario Casilli photo session. Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Season One (Repackage)
List Price: $44.98
Sale Price: $27.00
|
|
|
The thrilling 3-D CGI animated series The Clone Wars serves as impressive proof that George Lucas's Star Wars universe could translate to a weekly television series that wouldn't lose the scope, imagination, or sense of adventure of the features. Like the 2008 feature film of the same name, the 22 episodes that compose the series' debut season (2008-2009) cover the action between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Here Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and the latter's Padawan, 14-year-old Ahsoka Tano (who takes some getting used to), along with a complex cast of supporting characters from the Galactic Republic (including R2-D2 and C-3PO, again voiced by Anthony Daniels), battle the Separatists, which count members of the Sith and other adherents to the Dark Side of the Force among its ranks. The action is plentiful and the scripts rich with the quasi-mystical and eminently quotable dialogue on which the Star Wars saga has earned its legendary status; one can imagine only the most stringent purist or CGI detractor finding fault with the first season of The Clone Wars. The handsomely packaged four-disc set for season 1 includes a wealth of extras for those wishing to dig even deeper into the Clone Wars experience. Chief among the pleasant surprises is the widescreen aspect ratio for each episode, which gives greater depth and exposure to every single frame. Seven episodes are listed as Director's Cuts, which translates as an extra minute or two of action or dialogue--not earth-shattering, but they certainly enhance the enjoyment of each episode. Short featurettes, ranging between 5 and 7 minutes, accompany each episode and discuss production notes, character design, and other detail; these are expanded versions of the commentaries by supervising director Dave Filoni that were featured on StarWars.com, with additional contributions by series writer Henry Gilroy and sound designer David Acord, as well as new comments by Filoni. And there's a 64-page book of artwork from the series, including storyboards, concept design, and matte paintings, built into the body of the packaging itself. For the Easter Egg-inclined, a surprise awaits on each disc, including trailers for season 2 and animatics. --Paul Gaita
All 22 episodes from the first season--including "Ambush," "Duel of the Droids," "Dooku Captured," "The Hidden Enemy," and "Hostage Crisis"--are featured in a four-disc set. 8 1/3 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital stereo, Spanish Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, Spanish. **22 episodes on 4 discs. 8 hrs.**

Arguably the best film by Joel and Ethan Coen, the 1990 Miller's Crossing stars Gabriel Byrne as Tom, a loyal lieutenant of a crime boss named Leo (Albert Finney) who is in a Prohibition-era turf war with his major rival, Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito). A man of principle, Tom nevertheless is romantically involved with Leo's lover (Marcia Gay Harden), whose screwy brother (John Turturro) escapes a hit ordered by Caspar only to become Tom's problem. Making matters worse, Tom has outstanding gambling debts he can't pay, which keeps him in regular touch with a punishing enforcer. With all the energy the Coens put into their films, and all their focused appreciation of genre conventions and rules, and all their efforts to turn their movies into ironic appreciations of archetypes in American fiction, they never got their formula so right as with Miller's Crossing. With its Hammett-like dialogue and Byzantine plot and moral chaos mitigated by one hero's personal code, the film so transcends its self-scrutiny as a retro-crime thriller that it is a deserved classic in its own right. --Tom Keogh
A compelling, modern twist on the gangster genre, courtesy of Joel and Ethan Coen. Albert Finney is an Irish-American mob boss ready to go to war with a rival gangster, and Gabriel Byrne is a loyal lieutenant who tries to prevent the conflict, until a woman comes between them. Double- and triple-crosses abound in this violent tale of honor among thieves. With John Turturro, Marcia Gay Harden. 115 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 4.0, French Dolby Digital Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, Spanish; featurette; interviews; photo gallery; theatrical trailers.

Here are some more information for Mario Brothers:

New Super Mario Bros. Wii Game Review
I've already posted a review for New Super Mario Brothers for the Wii, however, concerns I've read claiming that New Super Mario Brothers is yet another clever attempt (Twilight Princess) by Nintendo to recycle familiar IP and take advantage of player nostalgia has inspired me to draft a quick response.
My answer to these claims would be, "Yes, but that's the genius of Nintendo."
Nintendo has pursued a strategy of recycling familiar characters for years. A major contributing factor to Nintendo's creative and commercial success is the company's ability to convince western gamers to invest in innovative hardware and game concepts by leveraging the familiar faces of a beloved cast of characters.
These characters have served Nintendo well over the years. And I will speak for myself when I say they do a fine job of convincing me to purchase games and consoles that I would have more than likely "passed on" had I not had so many fond memories with the characters that typically adorn the box.
I guess I would take issue with these tactics if Nintendo didn't put out great products, but that's just not the case.
With the enormous amount of brand equity and nostalgic producing power of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and the gang, is it any wonder that Nintendo would release a platformer which taps right back into what has sold so many games for them in the past?
Let's take a moment to flip the criticism of recycling characters or game play on its head for a moment. How many franchises have been able to masterfully guide their characters into a position to have even a fraction of the degree of lateral flexibility that Nintendo has produced for its characters? Many of the characters from the popular titles today lack the flexibility to skillfully exist outside of the world in which they were created (Halo Kart anyone?).
If you still disagree, I would ask you to review the number of units Nintendo has been able to sell and remember Stephen Colbert, "The Market has spoken!!!". Nintendo must be doing something right.

Where can I find detailed information on the Japanese version of Super Mario Brothers 2?
Hello. I am new to Yahoo 360 and I was wondering if there was a lot of information on the internet about some of the more obscure Super Mario Brothers games? I was wondering if anyone has ever made screen shots of all of the levels in the entire game of SMB2J, let alone for All Night Nippon Super Mario Brothers, Versus Super Mario Brothers, or Super Mario Brothers Special. If you have done so, could you please show them to me, please? Thank you.
Wikipedia has tons of information! There's some confusion because the US version is different from the Japanese version that you're looking for.
Screenshots for US version here:

A few Japanese screenshots are here:
http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/smb2j.shtml
I don't know if there are screenshots of all the levels, but stranger things have been found on the Internet. I suggest you go to these websites then continue to follow links. That's what makes the web the WEB!
