Bad Boys - Special Edition Bad Boys - Special Edition

Sale Price: $2.23

Miami cops Marcus Burnett, a family man and Mike Lowry, a ladies' man are given 72 hours to regain drugs stolen from their police station; matters are complicated when they have to pretend to be each other.Genre: Feature Film-Action/AdventureRating: RRelease Date: 27-MAY-2003Media Type: DVD

A cheerfully over-the-top action film, Bad Boys is notable chiefly for the rapport between its two stars, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, as two Miami cops on the trail of a drug kingpin as they try to protect a witness (Tea Leoni). Smith is the swinging bachelor and Lawrence the family man, and both must juggle their personal lives as they baby-sit the one chance they have to recover a stolen drug shipment, save their jobs, and take down the drug dealer. While the film is almost always implausible and its story is something seen many times before, director Michael Bay (The Rock) keeps things moving stylishly and at a feverish pace, as Smith and Lawrence prove themselves a terrific comic pairing. Their odd couple banter flies at a faster clip than the bullets and explosions, and becomes the best reason to see this hyperbolic but entertaining action flick. --Robert Lane

Cowboy Way [VHS] Cowboy Way [VHS]
List Price: $9.98
Sale Price: $2.99

Somebody in Hollywood thought there was some fish-out-of-water potential in this teaming of wild man Woody Harrelson and slow-burning Kiefer Sutherland as a pair of New Mexico cowboys who go to New York to tame the wild, wild, uh ... East. Well, they were mistaken, because this 1994 action-comedy is little more than a tiresome reworking of Crocodile Dundee. Woody and Kiefer head for the Big Apple to rescue the illegal-immigrant daughter of one of their rodeo buddies (who has mysteriously disappeared), and what they discover is a sweatshop operation run by a hot-tempered thug (Dylan McDermott, before his role on TV's The Practice). That's when the boys start using their ropin' and shootin' skills to foil the bad guys. One measure of this film's credibility is the inevitable scene of the boys riding on horseback through the gridlocked streets of Manhattan. Uh huh. You know how it goes... you just have to go with it or marvel at the sheer stupidity of it all. Of course, forget all the sniping if you're a fan of Harrelson or Sutherland--they're both doing their best under the burden of disadvantage. --Jeff Shannon

Tommyknockers [VHS] Tommyknockers [VHS]
List Price: $6.98

The Tommyknockers is a TV miniseries based on Stephen King's 1987 novel. An alien spacecraft has been buried beneath the Burning Woods near the small rural New England community of Haven for millions of years, but has now by chance been unearthed by Bobbi (Marg Helgenberger) while digging around in the woods behind her house. The structure in the woods begins to exert a glowing-green influence on the town, causing the people to invent Rube Goldberg-like gizmos, develop the gift of telepathy, lose their teeth, and form a hive-mind mentality bent on digging up the ship and revivifying the desiccated aliens within. Luckily, Bobbi's significant other is an alcoholic poet (Jimmy Smits) who needs to learn to face his fears. He also has a metal plate in his head that prevents the hive-minders from reading his thoughts and makes him immune to the neon-green influence of the aliens. Ultimately, it's up to him to save the day. Although the acting is topnotch, especially from Smits and Helgenberger, and there are plenty of gooseflesh moments, there are also enough plot holes here to fuel a very long and enjoyable evening's conversation. Why do the aliens start in at this time, when they've been causing legends in the woods for ages? Where does an alien ship buried for ages get all that dry ice? How does the Smits character make a living as a poet? One suspects that King's fine sense of New England characterizations is given short shrift here, and that the woods in his mind teem with more alien thoughts than the TV miniseries form could embody. Welcome appearances by congenial actors abound, notably Joanna Cassidy, E.G. Marshall and Robert Carradine. And there's a slutty postal letter-carrier played authentically by Traci Lords. --Jim Gay

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - The Complete Fifth Season CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - The Complete Fifth Season
List Price: $22.99
Sale Price: $11.86

Relaxing at the top of the Nielsen ratings, C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation: The Complete Fifth Season stretched its legs a little to wander into the more grisly, more disturbing, and altogether more personal. "Down the Drain" showed the first overt romantic moment--in the form of a near-kiss--between Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) and Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan), which was discussed at length in the commentary and behind-the-scenes featurette as "a big moment." After that tease, the series pulled back and plunged into some of its most disturbing crimes yet. In "King Baby," a wealthy, middle-aged murder victim turns out to have lived as a baby, complete with adult-sized nursery; in "4x4," a personal trainer's face is eaten away from the inside out due to toxic mold in his house; in "Compulsion," a teen boy kills his younger brother for revealing that the older brother wets the bed. The biggest change in this season is an HR one: new director Conrad Ecklie (Marc Vann) splits up the team, making Willows a shift supervisor and causing friction between she and Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox). He also adds a new member, Sofia Curtis (Louise Lombard), to banter with Gil Grissom (William Petersen)'s team. The move doesn't dampen the show's pace, as most cases break the team into twosomes anyway. But it does add a new villain in Ecklie, all politics and PR versus Grissom's heart to protect his team. Meanwhile, other cases dig deeper into the personal demons of Sidle and Willows; and the season finale, a slam-bam two-parter handily directed by Quentin Tarantino, focuses on the kidnapping of Nick Stokes (George Eads), buried alive with fire ants. This episode, the most emotionally charged yet, brings the entire team together and shows why it's still the No. 1 show on television. --Ellen A. Kim

All 25 episodes from season five--including "Viva Las Vegas," "Formalities," "Who Shot Sherlock?," "Hollywood Brass," and the Quentin Tarantino-directed "Grave Danger"--are featured in a seven-disc set. 18 hrs. total. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital stereo Surround; audio commentary on selected episodes; featurettes. **25 episodes on 7 discs. 18 hrs.**

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - The Complete Sixth Season CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - The Complete Sixth Season
List Price: $22.99
Sale Price: $11.66

A perennial Nielsen ratings topper, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation shows no signs of losing creative momentum in its sixth season. The 24 episodes are taut, fascinating, and gruesome; that killer combination fulfills the promise this CBS series has shown since its inception. In its sixth year, the show delves into the characters' personal lives more so than in previous seasons, adding more dimension and truth to the roles. We see the looks exchanged between head investigator Gil Grissom (William Petersen) and his underling Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) and learn the true nature of their relationship. Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) works on a case involving her estranged father that may land him behind bars. And partially in response to Nick Stokes' (George Eads) kidnapping last season, Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan) impetuously marries his girlfriend, much to the chagrin of Catherine. The personal vignettes are never at the expense of the twisted cases, which include a murder attempt on a fading Vegas beauty (Faye Dunaway), siblings affected by hypertrichosis (excessive hair growth), and the return of Lady Heather (Melinda Clarke) in a startling episode penned by author Jerry Stahl (i>Permanent Midnight. But the season's most compelling storyline features straightforward detective Jim Brass (Paul Guilfoyle), who is embroiled in a shootout in a poor, Hispanic neighborhood. The racial tension between the police and the residents is thick and menacing, and no one is sure who is in the right. The main problem with CSI also is something that can't be prevented. In order to clue viewers in to some of the complicated procedures the investigators are undertaking, the characters habitually explain to each other why they're performing a certain test or checking for other components. They're scientists and already know why. The special features include audio commentary on six episodes. One of the most interesting (and funny) featurettes is the sound editor explaining how he utilizes vegetables to enhance autopsy scenes--and then later uses the leftovers for snacks. --Jae-Ha Kim

All 24 episodes from season six--including "Bodies in Motion," "Shooting Stars," "Dog Eat Dog," "Pirates of the Third Reich," and "Way to Go"--are featured in a seven-disc set. 17 1/3 hrs. total. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital stereo Surround; audio commentary on selected episodes; featurettes. **24 episodes on 7 discs. 17 1/3 hrs.**

I've been a sci-fi geek for as long as I can remember. If it's got lasers or robots in it, there's a strong chance that I've seen it. And let's not forget about aliens. From intergalactic scum like Greedo to warm and fuzzy visitors such as E.T., alien movies are as diverse as they are plentiful. In the following article, I've listed some of my favorite films featuring aliens, and I hope you'll give them a try.

Alien (1979) - There's no better place to start this list than a movie that had a major influence on the future of science fiction and horror. Directed by Ridley Scott, Alien revolves around the crew of the spaceship Nostromo and their efforts to survive the presence of a murderous alien lifeform. Filled with suspense, betrayal, and chest-bursting terror, it's a must-see for fans of the genre. Starring Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Tom Skerritt.

Cloverfield (2008) - A massive alien creature winds up on our planet and goes on a rampage through the heart of New York City. As the military struggles to kill the monster, a group of twenty-somethings attempt to flee the city. Shot on a relatively low budget, this modern-day creature feature was a major hit for producer J.J. Abrams.

Altered (2006) - Directed by one-half of the duo behind The Blair Witch Project, Altered picks up years after a group of friends were abducted by visitors from beyond the stars. Since one of their pals died during the experience, the rest have been biding their times and plotting revenge. They finally get their chance when a live alien is captured, but they soon realize that they've bitten off more than they can chew.

Species (1995) - Natasha Henstridge gained the attention of men everywhere as Sil, the product of splicing human and alien DNA. Escaping from captivity, Sil goes on a murderous road trip looking for a suitable male to mate with. Meanwhile, a team consisting of Alferd Molina, Michael Madsen, Marg Helgenberger, and Forest Whitaker seeks to capture or kill her. Three sequels would follow.

Lifeforce (1985) - Astronauts find a giant spaceship inside Halley's Comet and bring the humanoid lifeforms back with them. Big mistake, as they turn out to be space vampires who drink the life force of their victims (killing them in the process). A blend of horror and sci-fi from the mind of writer Dan O'Bannon (Alien) and director Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre).

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - Steven Spielberg delighted kids of all ages with this tale of a gentle alien who's accidentally left behind on Earth. Befriended by a young boy (Henry Thomas), E.T. must avoid government agents until he can be rescued. Still a classic after all these years.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) - Murderous aliens show up on Earth, and they look just like oversized clowns (with really pointy teeth). But their comical weapons are actually lethal, and soon a small town must struggle for its very survival. A bizarre mixture of horror, sci-fi, and comedy.

Men in Black (1997) - Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones star as members of a secret organization dedicated to keeping the planet safe from alien invaders. During the course of the film, they also help deliver an extra-terrestrial baby, interrogate a seedy pawnbroker from outer space, and monitor the progress of local aliens such as Sylvester Stallone and Michael Jackson.

The Hidden (1987) - An alien cop (Kyle MacLachlan) heads to Earth to track down the intergalactic criminal who killed his partner. Posing as a FBI agent, he teams up with a cynical L.A. cop (Michael Nouri). But the criminal can move from host to host, making the pursuit even more difficult (and deadly). An underrated gem of the sci-fi genre.

District 9 (2009) - After an alien ship becomes stranded over South Africa, the drone-like crewmembers are herded into camps while the world's governments try to figure out their technology. Years later, a bureaucrat (Sharlto Copley) oversees their relocation, but he winds up being infected with an otherwordly substance. Slowly turning into an alien creature, he becomes hunted by the very people he worked for. A clever commentary on racial segregation and the very real events that took place in South Africa during apartheid.

That concludes our look at some of the best alien movies around. A search on the Internet will reveal many more, and I'd urge you to see as many as you can possibly stand. After all, when the real aliens finally show up on Earth, you'll be as prepared as possible.

Csi Actor Marvels at Series' Success

Gary Dourdan has been a mainstay on the CBS hit drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation since it premiered back in October of 2000. He plays Warrick Brown in the ensemble cast which includes veterans William Peterson, Marg Helgenberger and Paul Guilfoyle. The original series set in Las Vegas, has been a consistent top rater and is still the strongest and most solid of the three CSI shows. CSI has given rise to two spin-offs, CSI: Miami and CSI: NY.

CSI has become the premier forensic drama series since it started and while many have followed in its steps, the Las Vegas show continues to set the bar, not only for its franchise but for the genre as well.

There have been upsides and downsides to the show’s success and popularity. The science of forensics has gained a massive following due to the show’s focus and format. Dourdan recounts that he has received mixed feedback regarding the impact of the show. He recalls how young fans, especially kids, have approached him to ask about forensic criminology while law enforcers have expressed some frustration over the amount of inside information criminals can gather from the episodes. “There's some good and bad to it I suppose," Dourdan explained. "That's what we get from law enforcement all the time, criminals watch our shows, this is what to see what not to do!" Because of the highly specific and scientific elements to the forensics involved in the show’s episodes, many trade secrets and investigative tools have become public knowledge, potentially giving would-be criminals and lawbreakers an edge at eluding capture and persecution.

Despite some of the drawbacks, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation remains a formidable force in the ratings game. It is also the only one of the three CSI shows to retain all of its original cast throughout its seven seasons. This has allowed its stars, including Dourdan, to learn a great deal about the world of forensic criminology. He says that despite its run, there hasn’t been a shortage of new things to assimilate and learn because the writers and producers are always giving them new material, stories, plots and science to work with.
