The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc

This retelling of the legendary story of Joan of Arc, the French war heroine and religious martyr is played about as well as one could by Milla Jovovich. With an all star cast of Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway and John Malkovich, “The Messenger†should have been a bigger hit but critics were hard on the film, criticizing the use of modern idioms and the inaccuracy of the battle scenes, nonetheless, Jovovich does a great job as playing the slightly crazy, but religiously fervent Joan, who believes that God is guiding her actions.

The Claim

For some reason, no one saw this underrated gem from English director Michael Winterbottom (“Wonderlandâ€, “A Mighty Heartâ€, “9 Songsâ€) despite it being one of the most beautifully shot, directed and acted movies about the California Gold Rush of 1849. Jovovich plays a brothel owner and mistress to the town’s de facto leader, the film delves into connections between a newcomer and his wife and the other powerful town residents, all of which are looking for wealth and happiness. One of Jovovich’s last great drama roles before she become more known for her action film roles in “Resident Evil†and “Ultraviolet†she shows herself to be a very good actress if given the right roles.
