Rubber Soul

Rank 'em how you like, Rubber Soul is an undeniable pivot point in the Fab Four's varied discography no matter where, or how, you first heard it. The album was softened up in its original 12-song American edition to jibe with the Dylan/Byrds folk-rock sound, as well as squeeze money from the Parlophone catalog. The 14-song U.K. edition--the version now available on compact disc--is a different, more dynamic, and ultimately more accomplished achievement. So many classics: "Drive My Car" and "Nowhere Man" (both omitted from the U.S. edition) merge the early combustible Beatifics to a burgeoning studio consciousness; "The Word" can be read as a pre-psych warning shot; the sitar-laden "Norwegian Wood" and the evocative "Girl" (the latter written on the last night of the sessions) stand as turning points in John Lennon's oeuvre. George finally emerges too, with the McGuinn-ish "If I Needed Someone." --Don Harrison

Commemorating the 40th anniversary of Nat King Cole's death in 1965, this compilation is the CD companion of an excellent DVD/documentary. Produced with the blessing of his estate, this disc is a thorough survey of his timeless genius--all recorded on the Capitol label. It captures his sumptuous and soothing tenor voice crooning on the pop tunes he made famous, like the ethereal "Nature Boy," the melancholy "Mona Lisa," and the bouncy "Straighten Up and Fly Right," and "Route 66." It also features Cole's often-overlooked skills as an Earl Hines-style pianist. "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas (Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps)," and "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup," attest to his international appeal, and see if you can keep a dry eye when you listen to Natalie Cole's posthumous, digitally-enhanced duet with her father on "Unforgettable." From strings to big bands, Nat King Cole is never out of style. --Eugene Holley, Jr. Watch Free Clips about Nat "King" Cole The World of Nat "King" Cole (high bandwidth) (300k stream) The World of Nat "King" Cole (low bandwidth) (56k stream)

With two different sensors, you'll get warnings sooner no matter the kind of fire. View larger. Be assured of your home's safety with the PI2010 smoke alarm. View larger. Dual-Sensor Technology for Improved SafetyExperts divide home fires into two groups: flaming and smoldering. Flaming fires result from flammable liquids and cooking accidents, while smoldering fires most often occur when smoking materials, such as cigarettes, are left unattended. Ionization smoke sensors may detect smaller, less visible fire particles, like those produced by flaming fires, sooner than photoelectric sensors. However, photoelectric sensors are may detect larger, more visible fire particles, such as those produced by smoldering fires, sooner than ionization sensors. Each must pass identical performance standards to obtain third-party approval and meet Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 217, the independent standard to which alarms are listed. Because you don't know what type of fire you will have in your home, experts recommend installing both types of technology for optimal protection. Experts Recommend Protection from Both Types of FiresVirtually every recognized fire authority recommends the installation of both ionization and photoelectric alarms in order to maximize protection from either flaming or smoldering fires. Kidde offers photoelectric smoke alarms, ionization smoke alarms, and dual sensor alarms, which combine both technologies in one unit. Regardless of the technology, the most important thing is to ensure that you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas. Studies show placing alarms in both bedrooms and hallways could increase a family's escape time by up to 15 minutes. Fire Authorities recommending both smoke alarm technologies: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Consumer Reports National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Trademarked Hush Feature for ConvenienceBy pressing the Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners. This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately seven minutes. During this time, the alarm chirps every 30 to 40 seconds. If the smoke is too dense, the Hush feature is overridden and the alarm still sounds, and the alarm automatically resets at the end of the seven minutes. This convenient safety measure eliminates the temptation to remove the alarm's battery, which creates an unsafe situation. Wire-in Smoke Alarm with Reliable 9-Volt Battery Backup, Indicator LED, and Test FeatureBecause a smoke alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn. The PI2010 is a wire-in smoke alarm with 9V battery backup, which provides continuous protection against smoke and fire hazards even during power outages. The unit offers a low battery warning that issues a brief chirp every 30 to 40 seconds for at least seven days before losing power, letting you know it's time to change the battery. The unit measures just 5.75 inches in diameter and 1.8 inches deep, and it features a neutral, white finish. It features tamper resist features to deter vandalism or theft. This dual-sensor smoke alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 10-year limited warranty. Charmless and dull, this adaptation of the Broadway hit stars Aileen Quinn as the depression-era moppet, Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, Carol Burnett as the cruel headmistress at an orphanage, and Tim Curry as a villain. The film never gets its legs, and there is no sense of setting; it's almost as if the whole thing is happening in a void. John Huston nominally directed--no doubt to make money between his smaller, cheaper masterpieces--but one would have thought he would invest something of himself in here. --Tom Keogh

Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me." --Tom Keogh
A classic 1967 Disney animated film that's loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, Jungle Book tells the story of a young boy Mowgli who was raised by animals in the jungle. When tiger Shere Khan threatens to return to their part of the jungle, the other animals decide that Mowgli must return to the man village in order to ensure his safety. Panther Bagheera has difficulty convincing Mowgli to follow him to the man village and recruits the help of a big lovable bear Baloo. Mowgli's journey is one of wit, song, and many surprises. A timeless film populated by strong characters bursting with personality, great music like "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You," and inspiring animation by Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and other master animators, Jungle Book captivates audiences of all ages. This Platinum Edition includes everything from the standard bonus features like interactive games, music videos, and deleted songs to exciting and sometimes rare commentaries by everyone from modern day animators to Walt Disney himself, multiple featurettes about specific aspects of the film and its production, and a lengthy deleted scene featuring lost character Rocky the Rhino. Especially interesting for adults and Disney fans are "The Bare Necessities: The making of The Jungle Book" featurette, which explores Walt Disney's commitment to developing strong characters and his insistence that writers, animators, and song writers create a light version of Jungle Book that followed his own personal interpretation of the story, and the "The Lure of The Jungle Book" featurette, which discusses Frank Thomas' and Ollie Johnston's amazing contribution to the film as prolific animators and the inspiration and influence that their work provided for future animators including Brad Bird (The Incredibles), Andreas Deja (Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King), Sergio Pablos (Tarzan), Will Finn (Home on the Range), and Eric Goldberg (Fantasia 2000). The full length commentary by Bruce Reitherman (voice of Mowgli), animator Andreas Deja, and composer Richard Sherman with its interspersed archival commentary of Disney greats from the original creative team (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Woolie Reitherman, and others) is also very interesting and insightful. --Tami Horiuchi

Willow (Special Edition)

Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG•Format: DVD•Runtime: 126 minutes
This epic Lucasfilm fantasy serves up enough magical adventure to satisfy fans of the genre, though it treads familiar territory. With abundant parallels to Star Wars, the story (by George Lucas) follows the exploits of the little farmer Willow (Warwick Davis), an aspiring sorcerer appointed to deliver an infant princess from the evil queen (Jean Marsh) to whom the child is a crucial threat. Val Kilmer plays the warrior who joins Willow's campaign with the evil queen's daughter (Joanne Whalley, who later married Kilmer). Impressive production values, stunning locations (in England, Wales, and New Zealand) and dazzling special effects energize the routine fantasy plot, which alternates between rousing action and cute sentiment while failing to engage the viewer's emotions. A parental warning is appropriate: director Ron Howard has a light touch aimed at younger viewers, but doesn't shy away from grisly swordplay and at least one monster (a wicked two-headed dragon) that could induce nightmares. --Jeff Shannon

Can I take professional looking photos with a Canon SD750?
I'm trying to learn everything about this camera. I would prefer to get a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi, but it seems as though that is in the very distant future. So for the time being, I'd like to make do with the SD750. Does anyone have any tips to help me get the best shots?
Some of the best photographs I ever captured were with my Kodak Easyshare 6440. So many people are disappointed when they spend hundreds or thousands of dollars buying cameras and equipment and find out that all that stuff doesn't make them a photographer. I would recommend checking into a book titled, How to Photograph Absolutely Everything, by Tom Ang. He demonstrates how to use a "cheap" point and shoot type camera to take very professional looking images. I would also recommend, using the SD750 until you have perfected your composition skills before looking to upgrade to a more capable camera. Remember, anyone can take good pictures with a cheap camera, it takes an expensive one to really screw them up.
