Sale Price: $8.39

Porcelain enameled signs have been said to be a true reflection of the times. When used for advertising, the signs gave a brilliant permanence to the product. This magnet is an authentic reproduction utilizing the same process popularized in the early 1900's. The colors are not paints but finely ground glass crystals which, when kiln fired at 1350 degrees Fahrenheit, fuse to the heavy steel plate. Each color is applied and fired separately, creating a durable, lustrous and rust resistant product.

I Lived To Tell It All I Lived To Tell It All

This album finds George Jones winding down his years on MCA, where his artistry mostly smoldered, never blazing bright as it had at Epic. Whatever the problems in getting the Voice on tape, there's a poignancy here in hearing a silver-haired man in his 60s trade on his rip-'em-up days as a hell-raiser ("Billy B. Bad"), and verge on self-parody in the drinking songs, as empty as returnable bottles. But even on cruise control, Jones remains the kind of singer who inspires awe and wonder, drawing on tensions that start way down in his gut, not just in his head, crawling inside the melody to pull it seven ways to Sunday, and curling his voice upward just when you think he's coming down. Whatever propels George Jones is dark, brooding, and coiled and ready to strike, and no matter how he tries to hide it in the lighthearted tunes, it's here, all right, meaner than the average Possum, and exposing itself with the occasional flick of its tongue. The trick is in knowing what to look for. That Jones. He always keeps you guessing. --Alanna Nash

Smoke Signals [VHS] Smoke Signals [VHS]

Based on a couple of short stories (from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven) by Sherman Alexie, Smoke Signals is a lean and assured feature that speaks well of its lengthy, rich evolution, including a development stint at Sundance. The first feature made by a Native American crew and creative team, the film concerns two young Idaho men with radically different memories of one Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), a former resident of the reservation who split years before and has just died in Phoenix. Arnold's strapping, popular son, Victor (Adam Beach), remembers him best as an alcoholic, occasionally abusive father who drove off one day and never came back. By contrast, Thomas Builds-the-Fire (Evan Adams), whom Arnold had saved from certain death years earlier, has chosen to exaggerate the man's life and deeds in a mythmaking fashion that drives Victor crazy. Circumstances bring the two together, however, in a bus ride to retrieve Arnold's ashes. There, in Phoenix, a confrontation with the reality of the dead man's fullest legacy has a profound effect on both characters. Alexie, who wrote the script and was personally involved in all aspects of the production, and first-time director Chris Eyre are so polished in their approach that you can barely feel the cinematic engine at work here. This is the kind of movie in which the characters seem to be driving everything forward, a captivating and pleasant experience that gets a little too tidy at the end (can we call a moratorium on scenes of human ashes lovingly disposed to the winds?), but which is undeniably moving. The cast, including Irene Bedard (the voice of and physical inspiration for Disney's Pocahontas) is outstanding. --Tom Keogh

Critically acclaimed as one of the best films of the year -- Miramax Home Entertainment is proud to present SMOKE SIGNALS -- a distinguished winner at the Sundance Film Festival! Though Victor and Thomas have lived their entire young lives in the same tiny town, they couldn't have less in common! But when Victor is urgently called away, it's Thomas who comes up with the money to pay for his trip. There's just one thing Victor has to do: take Thomas along for the ride! You're in for a rare and entertaining comic treat as this most unlikely pair leave home on what becomes an unexpectedly unforgettable adventure of friendship and discovery!

The Legend of the Lone Ranger [VHS] The Legend of the Lone Ranger [VHS]
List Price: $9.98
Sale Price: $30.62

This much-maligned big-screen version of the well-loved radio and TV show stands as one of the rare cases in which the entire performance of one of a film's stars was redubbed by another actor. (For the others, see Andie McDowell in Greystoke and Harvey Keitel in Saturn 3.) In this case, it was youngster Klinton Spilsbury (and whatever happened to him?), cast as the famous Texas Ranger, ambushed by villains and left for dead, only to return with silver bullets, a horse named Silver, a mask, and a Native American sidekick named Tonto (Michael Horse) on a one-man mission for justice. In this film he battles a vicious group of bad guys led by a flinty-eyed Christopher Lloyd. Spilsbury's every line was redubbed by James Keach. Despite a critical drubbing, this is actually a better Western than you would expect, given its long-sullied reputation. --Marshall Fine

Comanche Moon: The Second Chapter in the Lonesome Dove Saga Comanche Moon: The Second Chapter in the Lonesome Dove Saga
List Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $6.49

Adapted from the novel linking Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove" to "Dead Man's Walk," this miniseries follows Texas Rangers McCrae (Steve Zahn) and Call (Karl Urban) as they return home from a mission to capture a Comanche horse thief, only to discover their love lives in disarray. Reeling from these personal travails, the men are then asked to rescue their kidnapped captain. Elizabeth Banks, Val Kilmer, Rachel Griffiths co-star. 4 3/4 hrs. on two discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French; behind-the-scenes footage; featurette.

It's billed as "the second chapter in the Lonesome Dove saga," but Comanche Moon is actually a prequel to that much-loved 1989 miniseries. And while there's no doubt that it has some very big boots to fill, this three-part (on two DVDs, including bonus features) production is rarely less than eminently watchable and entertaining. Continuity is a positive factor: Larry McMurtry, who wrote the novel on which it's based, also co-wrote the screenplay, and Lonesome Dove director Simon Wincer returns as well. As for the cast, it's certainly not as star-studded as its predecessor, but Steve Zahn (as Gus McCrae), Karl Urban (Woodrow Call), Linda Cardellini (Clara Allen), and the others manage to suggest the characterizations brought to the screen by Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, and Anjelica Huston, respectively, without mimicking them. Of course, there are new faces on hand as well, principally Val Kilmer (looking a mite chubby, perhaps due to all the scenery he chews in his portrayal of Texas Rangers Captain Inish Scull) and Rachel Griffiths (as Scull's horny wife). As the tale begins in 1858, Call and McCrae, some years away from becoming the cattlemen depicted in Lonesome Dove, are Rangers serving under the educated and eccentric Scull as they work to protect the territory against marauding Comanches, led by the stern, vengeful Buffalo Hump (Wes Studi) and his crazed son, Blue Duck (Adam Beach). When Scull's horse is stolen by one of the Indians, he sets out to retrieve the beast, promoting both Call and McRae to Captain, and the rest of the story revolves primarily around them; in fact, although there's a reasonable amount of action (including the Comanche raid on Austin that opens Part Two), Comanche Moon is much less plot-dependent than character-driven, and it is Call (tough, taciturn, and totally clueless when it comes to the fair sex) and best friend McRae (an open-hearted, self-described jester) who are the most engaging of the bunch as they navigate the deep waters of their work and love lives (McRae with Clara and Call with the prostitute Maggie Tilton, played by Elizabeth Banks). McMurtry and co-writer Diana Ossana's dialogue manages to be at once plain and poetic, colorful and poignant, and regardless of what's actually happening onscreen, the miniseries has a light, often whimsical charm that separates it from most Westerns made for big and small screen alike. Extras include a "making of" featurette and more. --Sam Graham Stills from Comanche Moon (click for larger image) Beyond Comanche Moon Broken Trail 3:10 to Yuma Cat Ballou

A number of these sites have appeared in numerous shows and motion pictures and are well-known in their own right. Listed below are 5 California movie sites Hollywood fanatics will want to go to on their next big getaway.

1. Bushnell Avenue located in South Pasadena. This neighborhood is a Hollywood fave, with its scenic houses appearing as both exterior and interior shots for many prominent productions. Homes from Bushnell Avenue are also used in the films Ghost Dad as well as Old School and on the long-running television show thirty something.

2. Vasquez Rocks County Park. Science fiction motion picture and TV lovers especially will want to make a chance to stop by Vasquez Rocks County Park. It had been likewise used as a filming location for the epic 1977 George Lucas motion picture Star Wars, featuring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, as well as Carrie Fisher. Besides its utilization in science fiction stories, the Vasquez Rocks County Park served as a filming sight for Hollywood comedy motion pictures such as the Flintstones, Little Miss Sunshine, as well as Blazing Saddles.

Proper Packaging Design Can Improve More Than Your Bottom Line

Ron had a unique way of making boxes fit his custom-made marble sinks: He used a box knife.

Granted, it wasn't the most efficient means of forming the folds over his precious cargo, but it served the purpose and, for Ron's crew, it was good enough.

When I walked in his shop it was obvious Ron had a booming business. It was also obvious his current box supplier was lacking in creative design skills; hence the box knife.

And so, with Ron's permission, we loaded a sink or two in the car and headed back to our design room in Seymour, Indiana. Our team of design experts whittled away — not with a razor-encased contraption, but with a high-priced, computer-driven cutting board.

The end result amazed Ron. The new box formed perfectly over his various products. It was stronger and cheaper to boot. What's more, we added cut-out handles to accommodate Ron's crew which included a few gals who toted the hefty boxes once they were filled with sinks. One handle on the side; one on the end — made perfectly to fit the arm spans of the Ron's workers.

A common feat

It's typical. Guys like Ron know that packaging is an important aspect of their business. But, alas, they're serviced by box salesmen who know more about closing a deal than designing boxes.

That where I come in.

I earn my keep by showing manufacturing companies how to save money by improving their packaging.

A company in Columbus, Indiana — my home turf — was shipping its goods in plain brown boxes; the same boxes that displayed their products on store shelves.

The purchasing agent was encouraged to test white boxes (the color is actually clay, but looks white to shoppers) to see if sales improved. Scepticism was, of course, expected. Clay boxes are, after all, more expensive than the normal brown fare. But once the test was run, and furniture displayed in clay boxes out-paced identical product in brown boxes, the buyers saw the light. Gone were the brown boxes. They were replaced with the more expensive clay-colored boxes. The reason? The substantially increased furniture sales more than paid for the higher-priced new packaging.

Lone Ranger of boxes

When I was a kid I imagined myself being the Lone Ranger. One feat at a time I would save the day then ride off in the sunset with my faithful companion, Tonto.

Turns out that box selling differs little from the Lone Ranger, except I drive a car and not a horse, and my partner is a box designer, not a faithful Indian companion.

The scourge of the packaging industry isn't the black-hatted villain from the old westerns. Rather, the problem lies in less-then-competent design. A few subtle changes in box design can save money in labor while earning money by presenting a positive product display.

At Boxes.me  our goal is to save our clients more than cold cash. We strive to remove the aggravation of working with poorly-crafted containers, shallow designs and, yes,  box knives. Our goal is to improve the entire packaging process. Sometimes we save our clients by providing them less expensive boxes. More often we target their bottom line with workable solutions that can only be delivered by a top-notch design team.

Lone Ranger and Tonto stop at a saloon?

The Lone Ranger and Tonto stopped at a saloon. The Lone Ranger got off Silver and handed Tonto the reins. The Lone Ranger proceeded into the saloon and ordered a drink. Tonto, in the meantime, started running in circles around Silver. As the bartender poured the booze, he looked out the window and asked, "Is that your mustang out there?"
The Lone Ranger said, "Yes sir, it sure is".
The bartender said, "It looks like you left your 'injun' running!"
