Two centuries after their upstart American colonies showed them the door, the British returned--first to rescue American pop music from the cuddly clutches of manufactured mannequins who'd squandered the promise of Elvis, and then to dominate it well into the '70s and '80s. The irony of this triple-disc, 54-track anthology is that the Beatles, who spearheaded the charge, are barely represented (except for a spate of successful Lennon-McCartney covers, including several the Fabs never recorded), and their shaggier, bluesier rivals the Stones are completely absent. That said, the remaining tracks do a fine job chronicling the Brits' savvy, loving assimilation (and revitalization) of virtually the entire spectrum of American pop music, from Tin Pan Alley and Dylanesque folk to swinging saloon singers and bracing proto-punk. It slightly shortchanges the blues-rock and psychedelia that would become the dominant forces of '70s rock, but generously offers some more obscure chart gems in their place. A solid digital remastering has also worked wonders on many of the tracks. --Jerry McCulley

Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Black and White
List Price: $32.99

In these cartoons released between 1928 and 1935, Walt Disney created one of the icons of 20th-century culture. Disney's reputation was built on these early shorts, and the films shimmer with the energy of the young artists exploring the new medium of the sound cartoon. Watching the films in chronological order enables the viewer to see the remarkable progress Walt and his crew made in animation, storytelling, and acting in just seven years. The rambunctious, rubbery Mickey of "Plane Crazy" and "Steamboat Willie" quickly developed into the polished charmer of "Gulliver Mickey" and "Mickey's Orphans." More than 70 years after his debut, the black and white Mickey still displays the appeal that made him so popular during the '30s, when A Mickey Mouse Cartoon appeared on theater marquees with the feature titles, and his fans included Franklin Roosevelt, Mary Pickford, George V of England, the Nizam of Hyderabad--and the more than one million children who joined the first Mickey Mouse Club. Although it's fun to look at the old sketches and pencil tests, the high point of the supplementary material is the discussion host Leonard Maltin conducts with Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, the last surviving members of the justly celebrated "Nine Old Men" of Disney animation. Thomas and Johnston were nearly 90 at the time of the interview, but their enthusiasm for their work, for Mickey, and for the man who made it all possible remains undimmed. (Unrated; suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

The Saint Megaset

Nineteen actors have portrayed Simon Templar, the gentleman adventurer created by Leslie Charteris in 1928. Among the most memorable incarnations were George Sanders (in a series of 1930s films) and Vincent Price (who voiced the character on radio in the 1940s). But for baby boomers, there is only one Simon: Roger Moore, who starred in this classic 1960s British TV series. Moore makes a better Templar than he did a Bond (and he is certainly better than Val Kilmer, who stared in the 1997 feature film), and the inside jokes include guest appearances by Lois Maxwell, best known to 007 fans as Miss Moneypenny. Except for the gadgets, The Saint has all the pleasures of the Bond films: a real international man of mystery impeccably dressed (these entertaining adventures are "more cloak than dagger"), exotic locations, cold war intrigue, sparkling bons mots, and beautiful (albeit chaste) women, and the highlight of any episode is the devilishly funny prologue, in which, no matter where he is, someone always identifies our hero as "the infamous" Simon Templar, prompting him to cast his eyes heavenward as he is crowned by his signature animated halo. This 14-disc set includes all 47 original color episodes presented in their U.S. broadcast order. --Donald Liebenson

Choosing the Best Lapel Pins for you
by Caryn Smith
When ordering lapel pins, most people mistakenly believe they are all the same. You might be surprised to know that you have several options with regard to quality, materials, colors, styles and workmanship. Before purchasing your next order of lapel pins, review the information below. This way you can ensure you're getting the best lapel pins for your particular needs.
Cloisonné - The best of the best! Offering the most definition, sharply separated colors and intricate details, cloisonné lapel pins give clearly visible text and design elements. Starting with a bronze surface, a custom die is created to stamp your design into the base metal. Colors are hand-filled with a powdered glass-like resin mixture into the appropriate areas of the pin and then fired one at a time at a temperature of 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. This two-step process ensures that bleeding of colors does not occur. Each pin is then hand polished (to create a smooth surface) and gold or silver plated.
Cloisonné lapel pins can be made into custom shapes and sizes. Because they are of the highest quality, they can retain their beauty for years to come. The brilliant colors in combination with polished gold or silver give them a high perceived value, much like fine jewelry.
Photo Etched - Similar to cloisonné, the creation of photo etched lapel pins begins with your photo negative. An acid process is used to etch the image and text on to the metal base. Enamel colors are then inserted into the appropriate spaces one at a time. The entire sheet of metal is then fired at 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Visible metal areas are polished and plated. Photo etched lapel pins can benefit from the addition of a protective dome that can prevent the fading and cracking of colors over time.
Excellent for complex designs, photo etched lapel pins offer an easy-to-read logo and text on a highly attractive pin.
Offset Printed - Just as with offset printing of brochures or other materials, an image of your custom design is transferred from a photographic negative and then layered over the surface of the metal. Each pin is cut from the sheet of metal following the outline of your design. Non-colored (raised) edges of the pin are then plated in your choice of metal. Because the colors are printed and are not fired, an epoxy protective dome is applied to protect the pins from scratches or other damage.
A medium perceived value and a sharply defined design make offset printed pins a bargain.
Die Struck - Regal, stunning, legendary, handsome… these are all words that accurately describe die struck lapel pins. Stamped from a custom-created die on to a sheet of iron or copper, die struck pins are plated and polished, giving them a truly unique and elegant appearance.
Often used for years of service or employee awards, die struck lapel pins have a medium to high perceived value.
Soft Enamel - Using the iron or copper sheeting like die struck pins and the durable enamel colors of photo etched pins, soft enamel lapel pins give excellent value. Custom designed dies are stamped on to the metal. Enamel colors are then filled one at a time, and the pins are fired at 450 degrees Fahrenheit. An optional epoxy dome can then be applied for added protection if you desire.
With a high perceived value and very similar appearance to cloisonné pins, soft enamel lapel pins are a tremendous value for designs where text and graphics need to be emphasized.
Now that you better understand the particulars of each type of Lapel Pin, you can confidently make a decision on the best types for you.
