Have you noticed, we're seeing a lot of scuba diving clubs and training schools opening up everywhere - even in the northern states.

S.C.U.B.A., an acronym that stands for 'Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus', allows a scuba diver to enjoy sustained visits to the wonderful and unique areas of our oceans, lakes, and rivers. The only thing that even comes close to scuba is snorkeling - but snorkeling is usually enjoyed from the top of the water looking down.

Although scuba diving is most often considered a sport, there are some other vital applications. Scuba diving plays an important role in such occupations as forensics, underwater construction, and underwater salvage - to name a few of the big players.

Scuba diving equipment has come a long way since the beginning of this activity. Thrilling TV programs such as Jacques Cousteau and his underwater work, and the series 'Sea Hunt' starring Lloyd Bridges (an action adventure, fiction show from the 60's), have played a significant part in bringing scuba diving to the attention of the general public.

Contrary to what you might think, the first step in learning to scuba dive is NOT to purchase a load of equipment. Instruction from a professional diver before undertaking scuba diving is all-important. Contact your local YMCA (or similar organization listed in the yellow pages of your phone book), to arrange for the professional instruction they offer. Then rent your equipment to do some weekend scuba diving. If you find that you truly enjoy the sport, go ahead and purchase the equipment you need.

Basic equipment includes a mask, 'flippers' for your feet, a diving watch, tanks and regulators. You might want to use a diving wet suit, and carry a knife. Other gizmos and gadgets such as global positioning devices, floatation devices, surface balloon markers, etc., can be postponed.

Filling your air tanks can be done locally, or you might want to get your own compressor to do it yourself. Keep in mind it takes a special type of equipment to fill an air tank. You cannot take your tanks to the nearest gas station and fill them up with air from the car tire air hose! Oil and all kinds of other impurities must be filtered out before the air is considered to be of a sufficient quality level to breathe.

Proper control of descending and ascending various depths of water is required, and will be an important part of your instruction.

Once you are underwater, everything above and land-based is left behind. You have before you an alien world of sea creatures, fish, and -- the unknown.

It is the 'unknown' that might keep some aspirants out of the scuba diving environment, but it is the same 'unknown' that draws many into the sport! Stories of treasure, and sunken ships of old, and great sea monsters lure many to the sea -- and keep others away!

Whatever your reason, scuba diving is like nothing else you can do on this planet. Each spot you lay your foot is generally untouched by other humans. You truly 'Go where no man has gone before!'

My advice? Just do it! Take the challenge and experience it for yourself. You have a great adventure to gain - and maybe a fortune!

Playa del Carmen Real Estate Sees Efficient Progress on Bridges

Playa del Carmen Real Estate buyers will always receive a pleasant welcome from the local population, and will find that many of the locals speak English, and are eager both to practice, and to help out any new comers. In the case that you as a new resident wishes to learn Spanish – although it's definitely not considered an obligation – many locals also are willing to help you with this task. Because of this kind of welcoming atmosphere, communication in language and culture barriers is rarely a problem, and easily overcome when it is; quite the contrary, Playa del Carmen Real Estate has become home to residents from many, not only North Americans but Mexicans from many parts of the country, Europeans, and nationalities from other parts of the world.

With this blend, it will be no surprise to you to find others who are also learning Spanish. What may come as a surprise, however, is that you may even bump into a few Mexicans who are learning Spanish! As mentioned above, the vast majority of the Mexican residents are learning English, but some of these are of the local population, namely the Mayan population. While Playa del Carmen is a very multicultural town, the descendants of the area's original ancient civilization still have a real presence in the area. As residents from other countries, we visit the ancient pyramid sites, and see replicas of traditional villages; but not far away, these traditional villages are still the reality of life for many local Mayan people. In addition to preserving the ancient ruins and the tourist sites, the local government is also making an effort to preserve and draw attention to the current Mayan community, setting this culture at sort of a focal point of a real estate area which has drawn residents from all over the world.

One step in the preservation of the local Mayan culture is the creation community organizations. In late November, the mayor of Playa del Carmen, swore in the members of the organization "Ximbal Yeetel Sukuunoob" (Walking with our Brothers) which attempts to preserve, promote and spread the traditions and customs of Mayan culture.

During the ceremony the mayor noted that Mexico is a country rich in history and culture, a country in which all of us – Mexicans of indigenous or European origin, or, like many of us, new arrivals from other countries – are creating a blend of customs, language, literature, music and cuisine.

"Globally we are recognized for our indigenous cultural heritage, so it is rewarding to know that this partnership will work to preserve and spread Mayan culture," said the mayor. "We are heirs to a rich tradition, we are a community of ideals, we show the best of our culture and work together for the greatness of our land."

The organization has 9 members and 15 volunteers, which lead forums and seminars on Mayan culture. Moreover, the Association president, Carla Maria Yupit Moo, said that the organization and its work to preserve Mayan culture will also participate in altruistic activities; starting in January, it will provide therapies for children with various disabilities.

For new arrivals, who have recently bought their new Playa del Carmen Real Estate, and are looking for interesting ways to enjoy the uniqueness of the area, Mayan culture offers the possibilities of visiting traditional villages, taking Mayan language classes, buying folk art, or enjoying traditional Mayan cuisine. Again, the Mayan aspect is only one out of many options; but it allows us a interesting way to connect to areas roots a little closer.

Who was a better diver, Ted Kennedy when he tried to save Mary Jo, Or Lloyd Bridges in 'Seahunt'?

Ted dove valiantly several times in a futile attempt to save Mary Jo after he drove off the bridge. It's not like he was in the middle of an alcoholic blackout or anything when it happened. I'm sure his car's steering malfunctioned or something. Or maybe he was jealous of his brother with PT109, and he wanted to show his sailing prowess. Anyway, would you rather sail with Ted in his car, or Lloyd?

In the same vein of sarcasm of your question, if you believe his story of trying to save Mary Jo, I have some prime ocean front property in Arizona I can let you have fairly cheap.

I am old enough to remember that event as it was covered in the papers. He went off and hid for days after allowing Mary Jo to die while driving drunk. Then his main defense ( other than a huge bull story of diving over and over) was that the Kennedy family already suffered enough with the killing of JFK and wasn't that enough?

I am sorry, but much the same as the Kopeckni family, I dont have any sympathy for Ted Kennedy. He literally got away with murder due to family wealth and power.

Just my personal opinon though.

Best of luck and I hope you can find this useful
