Legends of Broadway: Liza Minnelli Live at Winter Garden

Liza Minnelli is Hollywood royalty, but it is on Broadway that she made her most distinctive mark, where her stage persona began to take shape and where she returned throughout her career to rediscover her adoring public. Live at the Winter Garden from January 1974 captures what may be the best of those memorable visits.Minnelli was already a Broadway veteran, winner of a Tony Award in 1965 followed by, in 1973, Academy and Emmy Awards. At the crest of that incredible wave, Minnelli returned triumphantly to Broadway to hold court at the Winter Garden for a month of performances, captured on this long-unavailable live recording. Bob Fosse staged the show and the composer/ lyricist team John Kander and Fred Ebb supplied new material. The show was a blockbuster hit, selling out the entire month s run in one day and setting a house record for the Winter Garden Theater. At the end of the season, Minnelli was awarded a special Tony Award for the Winter Garden show. The original album was released in April 1974, but had to be withdrawn because of contractual conflicts over songs from the Cabaret score. Until now, the recording was out of circulation. This long-awaited reissue is derived from the original master, engineered by Phil Ramone. Also included on this CD are three live bonus tracks that were not part of the original Winter Garden LP: Stevie Wonder's "You and I" and two standards, "It Had to Be You" and "My Shining Hour."

VARIOS INTERPRETES CABARET
Cheated out of playing nightclub canary Sally Bowles on Broadway in director Hal Price's Cabaret, Liza Minnelli nevertheless delivered an Oscar-winning star turn in Bob Fosse's cinematic reinvention of the show (which had the good sense to retain perverse imp Joel Grey from the stage production). Although the 1972 film discarded several songs from the original score, the new ones sound even better: Minnelli's breast-beating "Maybe This Time," the sultry "Mein Herr," and the salaciously satirical "Money, Money." By placing almost all the pertinent musical action on the stage of the decadent Kit Kit Club, the Kurt Weill-like compositional nuances and political underpinnings bask in the spotlight...that is, when Minnelli stops eclipsing it with her no-holds-barred performance. --Kurt B. Reighley

Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Director (Bob Fosse), Best Actress (Liza Minnelli), and Best Supporting Actor (Joel Grey), Cabaret would also have taken Best Picture if it hadn't been competing against The Godfather as the most acclaimed film of 1972. (Francis Ford Coppola would have to wait two years before winning Best Director, for The Godfather, Part II.) Brilliantly adapted from the acclaimed stage production, which was in turn inspired by Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories and the play and movie I Am a Camera, this remarkable musical turns the pre-war Berlin of 1931 into a sexually charged haven of decadence. Minnelli commands the screen as nightclub entertainer Sally Bowles, who radiantly goes on with the show as the Nazis rise to power, holding her many male admirers (including Michael York and Helmut Griem) at a distance that keeps her from having to bother with genuinely deep emotions. Joel Grey is the master of ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub who will guarantee a great show night after night as a way of staving off the inevitable effects of war and dictatorship. They're all living in a morally ambiguous vacuum of desperate anxiety, determined to keep up appearances as the real world--the world outside the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret--prepares for the nightmarish chaos of war. Director-choreographer Fosse achieves a finely tuned combination of devastating drama and ebullient entertainment, and the result is one of the most substantial screen musicals ever made. --Jeff Shannon

Liza Minnelli is Pookie Adams, a relentlessly kooky coed in The Sterile Cuckoo. The film's focus, however, is on Wendell Burton (likewise making his first screen appearance) as reserved young college student Jerry. He is actively pursued by the unpredictable Pookie, who helps him to survive his first months in school. Gradually, however, it is obvious that Jerry is outgrowing Pookie. Both, however, have benefited from the relationship (he has gained self-confidence, she is now able to come to grips with her unhappy home life) and their parting is a tender one. Not unlike his stars, Alan J. Pakula was making his directorial bow with The Sterile Cuckoo.

Arthur

When you get caught between the moon and New York City (ahem), chances are you'll find yourself taking another look at this hit comedy starring Oscar-nominated Dudley Moore as the charmingly witty, perpetually drunken millionaire Arthur Bach. Arthur falls in love with a waitress (Liza Minnelli) who doesn't care about his money, but unfortunately Arthur's stern father wants him to marry a Waspy prima donna. The young lush turns to his wise and loyal butler (Oscar-winner John Gielgud) for assistance and advice. Arthur was a huge hit when released in 1981, as was its Oscar-winning theme song by Christopher Cross. Few remember that the movie was, sadly, the only one ever made by writer-director Steve Gordon, who died less than a year after the film's release. Consistently funny and heartwarming, Arthur was hailed as a tribute to the great romantic comedies of the 1930s. --Jeff Shannon
Daffy Dudley Moore is Arthur, the tipsy millionaire playboy who is forced to choose between his money (and an arranged marriage) and true love Liza Minnelli. John Gielgud won an Academy Award as Moore's caustic butler in a comedy rich with laughs. With Jill Eikenberry. 97 min. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, Spanish, French; theatrical trailer.

Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre: The Complete Collection
List Price: $59.98
Sale Price: $32.38

One of the first gems of the cable TV age, Faerie Tale Theatre brings 26 classic tales to life. Produced over a five-year span (1982-87) for Showtime, FTT brought together creative dramatics and whimsical writing with some of the top talents of the day. Executive producer/host Shelley Duvall (who was coming off her breakout role in The Shining) shepherds this mix of theatrical simplicity and grand storytelling for these oft-told tales ("Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Hansel and Gretel," "Sleeping Beauty," and the like) for kids and their parents. Since they are not elaborately produced, FTT may be a hard sell for some smaller members of the family at first, but most should be hooked, even older kids who may pooh-pooh fairy tales. There's always a slight twist that makes these productions fresh. The cast is amazing, especially when you think how lightly cable television was thought of in the '80s: Jeff Bridges, Bud Cort, Liza Minnelli, James Coburn, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Reeve, Klaus Kinski, Billy Crystal, Matthew Broderick, Gregory Hines, Eric Idle, Robin Williams, and Mick Jagger are some of the talented--and varied--actors appearing. Crystal's take on the smart "Little Pig" (with Jeff Goldblum as the wolf) and Williams's "Frog Prince" are two comic gems. Malcolm McDowell, right in the middle of his career high-point of playing baddies, brings flair to the Big Bad Wolf, while his then-real-life wife Mary Steenburgen beautifully counterpoints as Red Riding Hood. The casting of Vincent Price and Vanessa Redgrave in "Snow White" is inspired. Also impressive are the directors Duvall pooled: Tim Burton ("Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp"), Francis Ford Coppola ("Rip Van Winkle") Peter Medak (three episodes), Nicholas Meyer ("Pied Piper"), and Roger Vadim ("Beauty and the Beast"). You can go on for days about these wonderful tales, most totaling around the 45-minute mark, but it's better just to get the set and start wherever you'd like; you will get to the end sooner than you think. --Doug Thomas
Movies Unlimited proudly presents this fabulous series, produced and hosted by actress Shelley Duvall, which features some of Hollywood's top performers in lively (and sometimes irreverent) spins on the world's best-loved fairy tales and fables. All 26 episodes--including "Rapunzel," "Sleeping Beauty," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "The Princess and the Pea," and "The Pied Piper of Hamelin"--are collected in a seven-disc set. 22 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo; lost episode "Grimm Party"; game; 112-page storybook. **26 episodes on 7 discs. 22 hrs. Includes a 112-page storybook.**

Service Music New York - Have You Heard
There is quite a fascination with eavesdropping. Most people get a little thrill off of hearing what others are talking about. In the entertainment industry, finding out what the next big thing is a full time in New York service music. The right person overhearing a conversation about a band or producer could be all that is necessary for a person to blow up, so to speak. Kermit the Frog attempted to be noticed this way by using, what he called, and a whisper campaign. The Muppets took Manhattan and so can you.
I would not recommend planting talking rats under tables at the Brown Derby restaurant to create buzz about your project. I would especially discourage replacing Liza Minnelli photo with your own. There are much easier ways than making Liza your enemy, although the resulting feud would be good publicity.
Talk about your band all the time at shows. Now do not be obnoxious about it. Do not shout your bands name from every rooftop. If you are at a show talk up your band. It does not matter too much if you over talk yourself, because honestly the more ridiculous your band sounds the more likely it is that someone who overhears you will consider checking out your band. There is really no need to even mention a website. All you really need is a MySpace. A search on Google will bring up a link to your MySpace and your webpage if you have one.
Buzz can be created on the internet as well. Target number one would be the message board of a favorite band or community of yours. DO NOT go into the board and just make one post plugging your band. Nothing turns of the hardcore posters more than spammers on their board. Talk about whatever the topic of the day is for a few weeks before broaching the topic of your music. A 100 plus poster talking about their musical project is far less annoying than one with only a couple posts.
Another great form of promotion does not involve any vocalization. A cryptic sticker a flyer posted EVERYWHERE is a very effective tool. The posted material only needs to have the group name. After someone sees the sticker in their neighborhood or campus about ten times a day they are bound to try and find out what it is all about. If nothing else they will talk to other people about seeing the stickers and/or flyers: hey have you seen those stickers everywhere? What is up with those?
If you get your name out their verbally, electronically, or visually people will notice if the volume is high enough and they will investigate. Just be sure that your music and your independent artist website can back up the hype. Nothing could hurt your hard work promoting more than a weak product. Do not make the big push to be heard until your music is listenable. Do not rush, this is not a race.
