Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett: The CBS Television Specials Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett: The CBS Television Specials
List Price: $13.94
Sale Price: $11.14

Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett were on the verge of becoming superstars when they came together for the first of their concert evenings at Carnegie Hall in the spring of 1962. Andrews was already a Broadway legend, performing in The Boyfriend, My Fair Lady and Camelot, though she was not yet a household name. Burnett had yet to make the leap to her own acclaimed primetime show but was grabbing attention for her hilarious bits on CBS's The Garry Moore Show and on Broadway in Once Upon a Mattress. The audience loved the show and the album, earning Burnett a second Emmy Award for her performance. Andrews and Burnett would reunite at Lincoln Center for their second concert special which was broadcast live on CBS in 1971. By this time Andrews had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world and Burnett was one of television's brightest stars. The material again showcased the distinctive talents of both women and includes one of the most remarkable medleys in history in which the two sprint through forty-six notable songs that had been written since their previous concert special. The album was released in 1971 using the monaural soundtrack from the broadcast. Live at Lincoln Center has been newly re-mastered and is available for the first time on CD.

List Price: $44.99

This is a GREAT movie and will love

Disney's adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief. We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying. --David Kronke

Star Wars Trilogy (Special Edition) [VHS] Star Wars Trilogy (Special Edition) [VHS]
List Price: $49.98
Sale Price: $7.96

The Star Wars trilogy had the rare distinction of becoming more than just a series of movies, but a cultural phenomenon, a life-defining event for its generation. On its surface, George Lucas's original 1977 film is a rollicking and humorous space fantasy that owes debts to more influences than one can count on two hands, but filmgoers became entranced by its basic struggle of good vs. evil "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away," its dazzling special effects, and a mythology of Jedi Knights, the Force, and droids. In the first film, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) gets to live out every boy's dream: ditch the farm and rescue a princess (Carrie Fisher). Accompanied by the roguish Han Solo (Harrison Ford, the only principal who was able to cross over into stardom) and trained by Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), Luke finds himself involved in a galactic war against the Empire and the menacing Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones). The following film, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), takes a darker turn as the tiny rebellion faces an overwhelming onslaught. Directed by Irvin Kershner instead of Lucas, Empire is on the short list of Best Sequels Ever, marked by fantastic settings (the ice planet, the cloud city), the teachings of Yoda, a dash of grown-up romance, and a now-classic "revelation" ending. The final film of the trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983, directed by Richard Marquand), is the most uneven. While the visual effects had taken quantum leaps over the years, resulting in thrilling speeder chases and space dogfights, the story is an uneasy mix of serious themes (Luke's maturation as a Jedi, the end of the Empire-rebellion showdown) and the cuddly teddy bears known as the Ewoks. Years later, George Lucas transformed his films into "special editions" by adding new scenes and special effects, which were greeted mostly by shrugs from fans. They were perfectly happy with the films they had grown up with (who cares if Greedo shot first?), and thus disappointed by Lucas's decision to make the special editions the only versions available. --David Horiuchi

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins [VHS] Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins [VHS]
List Price: $22.99
Sale Price: $6.45

This direct-to-video feature, which serves as a lead-in to the upcoming Disney animated TV series, continues the adventures of Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story films--and introduces the new supporting cast. Buzz battles the evil Emperor Zurg, who steals the "Unimind," a device that enables three-eyed aliens to function as a single intellect. The aliens, referred to as "LGMs" (little green men), form the support crew that keep Star Command running, but as individual thinkers, they're inept. During the course of this tongue-in-cheek adventure, Buzz acquires the sidekicks who form Team Lightyear: Booster, an oversized, overeager alien; XR (short for "Experimental Ranger"), one of the aliens' less successful robot inventions; and the inevitable spunky girl, Princess Mira Nova of the planet Tangeah. The two-dimensional, hand-drawn figure of the three-dimensional, computer-generated Buzz recalls the animated versions of live performers who populated Saturday morning TV during the 1980s. This adventure is typical of current kidvid: it has more special effects and sight gags than the cartoons of 20 years ago did, but the violence-free battles feel very tame. Buzz Lightyear may engage kids who play with the toys, but it won't appeal to the adults who flocked to the brilliant Toy Story features. --Charles Solomon

Buzz Lightyear, the ultimate hero from the smash hit TOY STORY movies, is back as you've never seen him before! Now, for the first time ever, be there as the world's bravest Space Ranger takes on the evil Emperor Zurg in an intergalactic struggle of epic proportions -- right in their own backyard: the Gamma Quadrant far, far away. This all-new feature-length animated saga includes a special introduction starring Woody, Jessie, and Rex. Join them as they cheer for Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen): hero, legend, movie star ... and an action figure's action figure. Zurg and his henchmen have just invaded the Planet of the Little Green Men in their diabolical quest to take control of the universe. Buzz and his fearless team of Space Ranger Cadets (the mystical Mira Nova, the brave but bumbling Booster, and the experimental robot XR) are the only ones who can save the day ... and the galaxy! Will Buzz save the Little Green Men in time? Will he defeat the evil Emperor Zurg? Set your course for out-of-this-world excitement as everyone's favorite Space Ranger, BUZZ LIGHTYEAR OF STAR COMMAND, takes adventure and heroism ... to infinity and beyond!

You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially if you've experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter) on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. Aye, matey, we've come a long way since Jason and the Argonauts! --Jeff Shannon

Spider-Man (Widescreen Special Edition) Spider-Man (Widescreen Special Edition)
List Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $2.99

SPIDER-MAN - The web-spinning superhero has a mission to save New York from his nemesis, the GreenGoblin, and to win the heart of Mary Jane, the girl next door.Product Measures: 0.5 x 5.5 x 7.5

For devoted fans and nonfans alike, Spider-Man offers nothing less--and nothing more--than what you'd expect from a superhero blockbuster. Having proven his comic-book savvy with the original Darkman, director Sam Raimi brings ample energy and enthusiasm to Spidey's origin story, nicely establishing high-school nebbish Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as a brainy outcast who reacts with appropriate euphoria--and well-tempered maturity--when a "super-spider" bite transforms him into the amazingly agile, web-shooting Spider-Man. That's all well and good, and so is Kirsten Dunst as Parker's girl-next-door sweetheart. Where Spider-Man falls short is in its hyperactive CGI action sequences, which play like a video game instead of the gravity-defying exploits of a flesh-and-blood superhero. Willem Dafoe is perfectly cast as Spidey's schizoid nemesis, the Green Goblin, and the movie's a lot of fun overall. It's no match for Superman and Batman in bringing a beloved character to the screen, but it places a respectable third. --Jeff Shannon

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Two-Disc Special Edition) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Two-Disc Special Edition)
List Price: $14.96
Sale Price: $3.19

Some movie-loving wizards must have cast a magic spell on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, because it's another grand slam for the Harry Potter franchise. Demonstrating remarkable versatility after the arthouse success of Y Tu Mamá También, director Alfonso Cuarón proves a perfect choice to guide Harry, Hermione, and Ron into treacherous puberty as the now 13-year-old students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry face a new and daunting challenge: Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped from Azkaban prison, and for reasons yet unknown (unless, of course, you've read J.K. Rowling's book, considered by many to be the best in the series), he's after Harry in a bid for revenge. This dark and dangerous mystery drives the action while Harry (the fast-growing Daniel Radcliffe) and his third-year Hogwarts classmates discover the flying hippogriff Buckbeak (a marvelous CGI creature), the benevolent but enigmatic Professor Lupin (David Thewlis), horrifying black-robed Dementors, sneaky Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall), and the wonderful advantage of having a Time-Turner just when you need one. The familiar Hogwarts staff returns in fine form (including the delightful Michael Gambon, replacing the late Richard Harris as Dumbledore, and Emma Thompson as the goggle-eyed Sybil Trelawney), and even Julie Christie joins this prestigious production for a brief but welcome cameo. Technically dazzling, fast-paced, and chock-full of Rowling's boundless imagination (loyally adapted by ace screenwriter Steve Kloves), The Prisoner of Azkaban is a Potter-movie classic. --Jeff Shannon

Lincoln Center

Children with special needs are often unable to successfully participate in group class activities. This prevents them from creating social connections to their peers and discovering the joys of working and playing as a group. They struggle with a variety of problems such as focus issues, picking up social cues, body control and feeling at ease in their surroundings. These children who often deal with an aide, and find the freedom, transitions and sounds of the preschool classroom overwhelming and the rules, confusing, often do surprisingly well in creative movement classes. These classes can provide just the structure they need without being constraining. When the activities are clear, fun and simply communicated, special needs kids can easily excel! This gives them a feeling of accomplishment and peer support, which, in turn, gives them confidence, and a sense of connection that is not prevalent in the other parts of the day.

Specialists who accompany these children notice that the continuous flow of a movement based lesson prevent children from getting distracted. The movement activities connect together seamlessly leaving no room for minds to wander. If curriculum is presented in short, very simple steps it is achievable for a special needs child. Another added advantage, as one specialist puts it: "Children who have trouble focusing are really helped by observing their classmates in a creative movement class."  Everyone has the same directions and set of expectations. In addition, there is an acceptance of individual choices and how these choices enrich the group.

Focusing on simple props such as scarves or beanbags provide an anchor for special needs children. Colored scarves help special needs children focus on the color and movement. Their attention stays on the colors and they feel connected to the activity in a positive way. Music also provides a connecting thread that children instantly respond to as individuals and as a group.

If these classes are developed with a tight structure, simple props and clear directions, special needs children can become more self regulating and participate successfully with their peers. Children with hyperactivity or A.D.D. can be easily redirected into the activity at hand without disruption. This does wonders for their self-esteem.

Incorporating a movement program into the preschool curriculum is a winning solution for helping all children gain respect for each other, learn about themselves and the world around them and have fun!

Is it difficult to transfer from Fordham University (at Lincoln Center) to Columbia University?

My dream school is Columbia. However, location for me as a senior in high school has been of primary importance. I was rejected not only by Columbia and Barnard but also by NYU. I haven't qualified for the Honors program at Fordham U at Lincoln Center and I haven't been offered any scholarships. However, if I do incredibly well as a freshman & as a sophomore is there still a chance I can transfer to Columbia University?

Is there a chance? Yes.

Is there a good chance? No.

The Ivy League schools accept very few transfer students. Some (like Princeton) do not accept any. Harvard and Yale accept about 30 students per year out of hundreds of applicants.

Columbia accepts fewer than 10% of the students who apply for transfer. Since almost all transfer applicants meet the standards required, that makes it especially difficult to get in.

If your dream is to go to Columbia, then my advice is to do well at Fordham and apply to Columbia for graduate school.
