A guilty, guilty pleasure, perhaps not one a left-wing feminist should be admitting to in public. Female boomers should recall yearly TV reruns of this Rodgers and Hammerstein production, featuring such delights as "Impossible" and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?" It may appear a bit stark to younger viewers, but part of the charm of this 1964 network TV special, a remake of the live 1957 telecast originally built around Julie Andrews, is its utter simplicity. An extremely young Lesley Ann Warren and Stuart Damon (of General Hospital fame) are joined by Ginger Rogers, Walter Pidgeon, and Celeste Holm. Warren is all sweetness and innocence without a hint of saccharine artificiality, while Damon is a clear-eyed romantic. This very handsome love story is a bit of an oddity, but worth owning just for the memorable score. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Life stinks--and if by "life" you mean this movie, then here indeed is truth in advertising. Mel Brooks totally missed the boat with this attempt at a comedy about life in the greedy Reagan years. He plays a heartless tycoon who bets that he could easily survive for a month on the streets of L.A. without a penny to his name, and then gets tricked out of his fortune. He winds up learning how the other half lives and it isn't funny. Literally. Watching this film, it's hard to believe it was made by the same man who wrote and directed The Producers. What does it tell you that this film was loved in France? --Marshall Fine

Reportedly the last feature to be personally shepherded by Walt Disney himself, The Happiest Millionaire is a stubbornly old-fashioned musical intended to build on the success of Mary Poppins, relying on songs and score from Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman, the studio's resident songwriting team responsible for the hits of Poppins. Despite that pedigree, and a cast headlined by Fred MacMurray, Greer Garson, Tommy Steele, Geraldine Page, and, in their screen debuts, Lesley Anne Warren and John Davidson, the would-be successor wound up a white elephant. Released in 1967, a watershed year for youth culture and social upheaval, The Happiest Millionaire romanticizes Philadelphia's upper crust circa 1916. Its title character, Anthony J. Drexel Biddle (MacMurray), is a militant industrialist urging America's mobilization against Germany, and noteworthy for an eccentric lifestyle that includes his own bible study classes, martial arts training, and (in a lone nod toward any remotely modern social values) a readiness to empower his lovely, headstrong daughter, Cordelia (Warren). Under Norman Tokar's busy but routine direction, the project does muster moments of charm, and packs its story line with enough twists to partly explain its excessive 144-minute length. But the unintended irony of paeans to capitalism and conservative politics in an era of Sgt. Pepper isn't masked by the Shermans' music, which is eminently forgettable, despite the game mugging of Tommy Steele as an immigrant Irish butler. Equally game is MacMurray, but as a singer, he's no Rex Harrison. --Sam Sutherland

Spartacus: Blood and Sand - The Complete First Season

All 13 episodes from the debut season--including "The Red Serpent," "The Thing in the Pit," "Great and Unfortunate Things," "Old Wounds," and "Kill Them All"--are featured in this four-disc set. 11 1/2 hrs. total. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), Spanish; audio commentary; featurettes. **13 episodes on 4 discs. 11 1/2 hrs.**
The "sword and sandals" genre isn't exactly known for its subtlety and restraint, but even by those standards, Spartacus: Blood and Sand is deliriously, delightfully over the top. Viewers familiar with the 1960 film starring Kirk Douglas and directed by Stanley Kubrick, the best-known version of the Spartacus tale, will recognize the basic outline of the story: a Thracian warrior with a beautiful, loving wife is betrayed by his Roman "allies" and forced into slavery, whereupon he distinguishes himself as a gladiator nonpareil and, after enduring countless indignities, leads his brethren and others in a rebellion against their oppressors. But there's a lot more Caligula than Kubrick in the 13 first-season episodes (each a bit less than an hour long) of this Starz television series, which stars Andy Whitfield in the title role and also features Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) as the wicked wife of Spartacus's owner. The fight scenes are highly stylized (the entire production seems to have taken a cue from the surreal, painterly look of 300) but extraordinarily brutal, featuring multiple dismemberments and decapitations amidst seas of slow-motion, CGI-generated blood; a gladiatorial battle in episode 5 pitting Spartacus and his rival-turned-ally Crixus (Manu Bennett) against a monster named Theokoles is definitely not for the squeamish, but that's only one of many such scenes. There's also ample sex and nudity, as the couplings involving various studly gladiators and lustful Roman noblewomen are like salacious combat between Chippendales dancers and Victoria's Secret models. Meanwhile, the personal relationships are the stuff of soap operas, with the Romans in particular depicted as relentlessly decadent, duplicitous, and power-hungry. If this all sounds outrageously entertaining, it is, though perhaps not for everyone. And although the future of the show (which was executive produced by Spider-Man director Sam Raimi) is in doubt due to Whitfield's ongoing battle with cancer, we'll always have this season to revel in. Bonus material in the four-disc set includes audio commentary on a variety of episodes and a batch of featurettes, most prominently a 15-minute "making of" documentary. --Sam Graham

A delightful Musical by Rogers & Hammerstein
CINDERELLA from Disney
Stars include .....
Whoopie Goldberg-Brandy-Jason Alexander-Bernadette Peters-and Whitney Houston
Full Length DVD from Disney New in Package
More is not necessarily better. A glitzy Hollywood cast and a big budget did not improve the wonderful 1957 teleplay (or its equally charming 1964 remake) upon which this version is based. This is partly because Brandy, cast in the title role, cannot act. Not helping matters are Whoopi Goldberg as the prince's mother and Jason Alexander as his valet. Their shtick wears thin very quickly. However, Paolo Montalban is charismatic as the prince, and Whitney Houston plays a fairy godmother with pizzazz. The production cost millions, and is certainly lavish, but the whole affair feels forced and overdone, reminding one of a prom queen wearing too much makeup. It does deserve credit for a multi-ethnic cast, the addition of two new songs and a hip attitude. However, the 1964 version (the original was not taped) is much sweeter and more romantic. Originally released as Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Clue: The Movie

The favorite mystery game comes to the screen in a hilarious whodunit that challenges you to guess who killed Mr. Boddy. Was it Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, or Lesley Ann Warren? 96 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English; alternate endings; theatrical trailer.
Undoubtedly the first movie in history to have played in theaters with three different endings (depending on which theater you attended), Clue is a silly whodunit based on the familiar board game featuring Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, and all the other usual suspects. A broadly comic cast play the sundry suspects gathered in a mansion to solve a murder, knowing that one of their numbers is the culprit. Michael McKean, Eileen Brennan, and Tim Curry are the best of the bunch, and the film is as lightweight an experience as a round of the game itself. Directed by Jonathan Lynn (My Cousin Vinny). The video release contains all three endings. --Tom Keogh

E&p Experts’ Line Up for Inaugural Spe Indian Event
August 22, 2007. New Delhi – With the international oil and gas industry’s attention increasingly focused on India as the country continues its emergence as a leading ‘hotspot’ for upstream activity, many of the world’s major players are lining up to participate in the inaugural SPE Indian Oil & Gas technical conference and exhibition.
With highly-respected individuals and companies from both India and around the world already confirmed to take part, the launch event to be held in Mumbai during March 4-6, 2008 is expected to establish itself as THE Indian upstream event. The biennial show’s standing is further enhanced as it is being organised by the long-established partnership between the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and Reed Spearhead Exhibitions (RSX), which already work together on other major oil and gas events including Offshore Europe in Aberdeen, Intelligent Energy in Amsterdam, and Russian Oil & Gas in Moscow.
Acting as Chairman of the event’s Technical Programme Committee is Mr. N K Mitra, Director (Offshore) of India’s ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd), the national oil company. His fellow committee members include several colleagues from ONGC, as well as representatives from Reliance Industries, BP, Chevron, Shell, ExxonMobil, Oil India Limited, Cairn Energy, Halliburton, Schlumberger, Weatherford, Baker Hughes, CERA and Harbison.
Mr Mitra said: “The conference theme is: ‘The Changing Landscape: Emerging Opportunities in the Indian E&P Industry’. The multidisciplinary programme includes issues surrounding Reservoir Management, EOR/IOR, Deepwater Exploration and Production, HSE, HR/Training and Development, etc… that will address technology challenges facing the Indian E&P Industry as well as explore technological advances needed for the continuously increasing demand on energy consumption. The quality of the technical conference put together under the guidance of the Society of Petroleum Engineers is undoubtedly one of the key attractions for attendees at E&P events. We would still welcome further submissions of abstracts for the conference at this stage, and those interested should go to www.indianoilgas.org and click on ‘Conference’.”
Key technology topics to feature in conference programme
A Call for Papers was issued in July with the initial deadline set for 15 September, with the content of the agenda-setting conference programme to be firmed up and papers accepted by the following month. Other topics expected to be featured include: Marginal Fields; Offshore Infrastructure Development; Offshore Facility Engineering; Mature Field Development; Production; Drilling; Completions; Facilities; Coalbed Methanes; and Non-Conventional Resources.
Also on the committee is Ms Lesley-Ann Sandbach, Managing Director of joint organisers RSX. She commented: “This is a technical conference and exhibition for senior executives, engineers and industry professionals that will bring national and international E&P companies to the Indian market to debate and invest in technology transfer and solutions. The unique technical content of this event will provide a superb technical environment for knowledge exchange and group networking. And it is being driven by an outstanding industry committee of experts from across the value chain.
“Confirmed exhibitors already include major operating companies such as ONGC as well as service companies such as Weatherford, amongst others, and these will all be showcasing the latest state-of-the-art technologies, services and expertise available.”
The event will be held at the Bandra Kurla Complex, MMRDA Ground in Mumbai

India the world’s fourth largest economy but one of the least explored
India is the fourth largest economy in the world and the third largest consumer in Asia but currently imports the vast majority of its oil and gas. Its policy to increase domestic reserves and production has already started to pay off, with some of the world’s largest ever gas finds having been made in the deepwaters off India’s east coast and onshore Rajasthan.
The country remains one of the least explored regions in the world, with a well density of 20 per 100 sq km. Of the 26 sedimentary basins, only 8 have been explored so far. The level of international interest recently prompted India to offer its largest amount of acreage ever in its latest NELP round.
The country’s predicted hydrocarbon resources are currently put at between 29-33 billion tonnes of oil equivalent, of which 10 BTOE are onshore, 12 BTOE offshore and 7 BTOE in deepwater. However, analysts believe that more than 81% of the country's hydrocarbon potential still remains to be explored.
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit professional association whose members are engaged in energy resources development and production. SPE serves 73,000-plus members from more than 110 countries worldwide. SPE is a key resource for technical knowledge related to the oil and gas exploration & production industry and provides services through its publications, conferences, workshops, forums and website at www.spe.org
