SHINE A LIGHT - DVD Movie

Martin Scorsese leaps into the madness of the Rolling Stones' organization in Shine a Light, barely controlling (in a most entertaining way) a documentary that culminates in the Stones' best concert on film. The movie's highly entertaining, pre-performance prologue finds a frazzled Scorsese trying to get a clue about the band's plans for a very special New York City date in 2006, a benefit hosted by Bill and Hillary Clinton. While Mick Jagger quibbles over concepts for the stage's set and peruses lists of possible songs to include in the show, Scorsese tries to figure out how to shoot something for which he has few production details. Everything falls into place eventually, and after an extraordinary meet-and-greet scene in which Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, and Charlie Watts catch up with the Clintons and sweetly introduce themselves to Hillary's mom, the Stones launch into a set that leans less heavily than usual on their greatest hits canon. Longtime fans are sure to appreciate the wealth of generally-untapped material from Let It Bleed ("You Got the Silver," "Live With Me"), Exile On Main Street ("All Down the Line," "Loving Cup"), and Some Girls ("Faraway Eyes," "Just My Imagination"). Jack White, Christina Aguilera, and Buddy Guy are on hand for memorable collaborations, but the Stones all alone are truly on fire in the relatively intimate setting of a small theater. Among the highlights is a sexy and even thrilling call-and-response between Jagger and ace backup singer Lisa Fischer on "She Was Hot," Richards' gracious and expansive solo on "Connection," and Jagger's witty take on "Some Girls" (which manages to skip over the controversial verse about "black girls"). Throughout the show, Scorsese and an army of camera operators cover the action from every conceivable angle, which results not so much in another hyperkinetic concert film but rather in the kind of graceful, flattering portrayal of a great band that the director mastered with The Last Waltz. --Tom Keogh

Les Bonnes Femmes [VHS] Les Bonnes Femmes [VHS]
List Price: $24.95
Sale Price: $14.95

The bonnes femmes of Claude Chabrol's film are four shop girls at a small appliance store in Paris. Good-time girl Bernadette Lafont spends her nights in empty flirtations with boorish womanizers, while social-climbing Lucile Saint-Simon withers under the disdainful gaze of her boyfriend's haughty parents. Seemingly confident Stéphane Audran secretly follows her dream of singing on the stage (losing her composure when she recognizes her friends in the audience), and demure Clotilde Joano holds out for the romantic notion of pure, innocent love. It's her story that Chabrol favors when she falls under the gaze of a motorcycle-riding stalker who finally reveals himself to be a shy, lovesick suitor, a Prince Charming in black leather. Les Bonnes Femmes was a flop when released, but has since been embraced as one of Chabrol's best films and a masterpiece of the French new wave. There's a breezy naturalism that invigorates the film: easy, seemingly spontaneous ensemble performances, the immediacy of shooting on location, and a loose, episodic story full of rich detail. But this is no urban fairy tale: the dreams of these girls are frustrated by a tawdry and brutal world in a shocking, sad finale. Never callous or dismissive, there's a fragile beauty to Chabrol's troubled portrait as he stubbornly holds out hope for these dreamers in a delicately melancholy coda. --Sean Axmaker

Country Girl [VHS] Country Girl [VHS]

In retrospect, George Seaton's adaptation of The Country Girl seems like the movie that was made to prove that both Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly could act. The tale of an alcoholic actor and singer (Crosby) and his long-suffering wife (Kelly) whose marriage is put to the test when he gets a second chance at stardom, Clifford Odets' drama is chock full of twists and turns designed to give actors a grueling workout, with its hidden secrets, tortured love story, and frank depiction of the horrors of alcohol abuse. Crosby and Kelly sank their teeth into the meaty roles with gusto (it helped that a rock-solid William Holden was there for each to spark off of), and both were showered with accolades that remained high points of their careers. Crosby was lauded with kudos for turning his charming persona inside-out, but it was Kelly who stole the show, possibly because at the time she was one of the hardest working women in show business. In 1954, the actress appeared in four films, including the Alfred Hitchcock classics Dial M for Murder and Rear Window, and finally ascended to leading-lady status after her stellar supporting turns in High Noon and Mogambo. In typical Hollywood fashion, though, it was only when Kelly shrouded her breathtaking beauty in plain clothes and a dowdy hairdo that she was taken seriously and awarded a Best Actress Oscar--one of the most highly contested ever, as she beat out comeback star Judy Garland's ferocious performance in A Star Is Born. --Mark Englehart

In THE COUNTRY GIRL, Frank Elgin (Crosby) is a washed up actor given the chance of a lifetime to stage a comeback when director Bernie Dobb, played by William Holden, offers him the lead in a new musical. Suffering from extreme insecurity, Frank turns to his wife Georgie (Kelly) to make decisions for him, and she teams up with Bernie to boost Frank's self-esteem despite the fact that she has grown sick of dealing with her husband's problems.

Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 08/15/2008

It's a good sign when a new year begins with Jeffrey Tambor (The Larry Sanders Show, Arrested Development) and ends with Harry Shearer (Spinal Tap, The Simpsons). Tambor shows up as Dorothy's doctor in the The Golden Girls two-part fifth season premiere ("Sick and Tired"). Unfortunately, he isn't able to determine why she's feeling run down, so she pays a visit to Empty Nest's Dr. Weston (Richard Mulligan, who returns a few episodes later). Blanche (Rue McClanahan), meanwhile, decides to become a romance novelist, despite the fact that she can't write. Dorothy (Bea Arthur) will eventually find out she has chronic fatigue syndrome (an affliction shared by writer/creator Susan Harris, who'll soon exit the show), while the flighty Blanche will retire from writing as suddenly as she took it up. Then she'll get the news that her daughter, Rebecca, has decided to become a single mother--via artificial insemination. Blanche is aghast. As for Rose, she'll get a new job as the assistant to a consumer affairs reporter and find second love with professor Miles Webber (Harold Gould). Other guests during the 1989-1990 season include Dick Van Dyke ("Love Under the Big Top"), Robert Culp ("Like the Beep Beep Beep of the Tom-Tom"), and a pre-Law & Order Jerry Orbach ("Cheaters"). Then there's Shearer ("The President's Coming! The President's Coming!"), who provides the voice for the first George Bush. Also, Marc Cherry, the man behind Desperate Housewives, receives his first writing credit, while Mark Moses--now best known as the murderous Rex--appears as Blanche's stepson. Unlike previous sets, this collection includes commentary from Arthur, McClanahan, and White. --Kathleen C Fennessy

PARIS JE T'AIME - DVD Movie

Even with the impressive talent involved, Paris, je t'aime could've ended up like a fallen soufflé. Though all 18 films aren't equally successful, they hit the mark more often than not. Romantics anticipating happy love stories set amongst the City of Lights may be disappointed to find that many are quite sad and that some parts of Paris are less inviting than others (each takes place in a different district). Further, the shorts aren't all en Français, since the actors and directors hail from around the world, but their outsider perspectives lend the project depth. The strongest entries are provided by Gurinder Chadha (Quais De Seine), Gus Van Sant (Le Marais), Oliver Schmitz (Place des Fêtes), and Alexander Payne (14ème Arrondissement), but all find interesting ways to explore cultural misunderstandings. In Joel and Ethan Coen's tragic-comic Tuileries, tourist Steve Buscemi angers a couple simply by making eye contact. Like Miranda Richardson in Isabelle Coixet's heartbreaking Bastille, he does all his acting with his expressive face. And while Maggie Gyllenhaal speaks the language adroitly in Olivier Assayas's intriguing Quartier des Enfants Rouges, Nick Nolte (purposefully) mangles it in Alfonso Cuarón's surprisingly weak Parc Monceau. The anthology ends with Payne's audio-postcard, in which Margo Martindale's postal carrier narrates her vacation in awkward, but endearing French. Instead of another person, she falls in love with Paris, simply for allowing her to be herself. It's the perfect finish to a poignant repast, like strawberries dipped in chocolate--sweet, but not cloyingly so. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Le Moulin Rouge Helped to Shape Paris Culture

Hugh Heffner publisher of Playboy Magazine is ony one of the few celebreties who visited the cabaret show in Paris together with his 3 girlfriends Kendra Wilkinson the young blond only 18 years old when she moved into the Mansion house, Bridget Marquadt and Holly Madison. After the show they said that they loved everything and wanted to jump onto the stage and perform together with the rest of the crew, they found the show hot and sexy.

Le Moulin rouge has a remarkable history, it actually goes down in history as the first woman nightclub, named Le Premier Palais des Femmes, the first place where joy girls amid great public interest.

In the beginning of the Industrial revolution, about 1815 when the compact of Paris was signed, Paris started an important and never changeable march. A chapter that announced itself in a movement of free will and a relaxed environment. The upper class needed to make place and couldn’t live in the bounds of possibilities, the were seeking for attention while their limits faded away. The line between lower and upper class was getting thin and it didn’t take such a long time when they started to mix under each other.

Le Moulin Rouge was the perfect place for a mixture between different classes, here both parties could experience the joy and freedom of live and desires, they weren’t different but need each other to experience. There were no secret desires anymore, it all came up to every ones expectations.

Le Mouline Rouge opened the doors in 1889, a prestigious club that welcomed everyone who had an open minded and relaxed personality, lower and upper class. Le Moulin Rouge was the place for a cocktail drink, dinner and an erotic dazzling show. An organization known to dot the i ‘s and crosses the t ‘s.

Up until this day everybody knows the French Cancan, Lil Kim; Christina Aguillera and Pink performed Lady Marmelade, a nr 1 Mtv video clip and a nr & hitlist for a long time. They did a marvellous job and gave a modern representation of how the Moulin Rouge was and is.

But surely Le Moulin Rouge played by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor as Satin and Christian is the best musical movie ever made, a fantastic and genuine representation of what went on during the Moulin Rouge in 1815.
