Are High-definition TV's backward compatible?

What I mean is if I have a high-end high-definition TV (like a Pioneer Elite), can I still view VHS and laserdisc movies on it without the picture looking horrible?

Standard television looks fine on a HDTV. I have a 50" HD-plasma and regular TV looks good and so do DVD's. Your VHS will look fine also. But the bigger the screen the more distorted it looks but not by much.
