Another made-for-video sequel to a Disney masterpiece. As with the Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas sequels, most of the recognizable vocal talents return, creating a worthwhile successor to the highest-grossing animated film ever. We pick up the story as the lion king, Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick), and Nala (Moira Kelly) have a new baby cub, a girl named Kiara (Neve Campbell). Like her father before, she seeks adventure and ends up outside the Pridelands, where lions loyal to the evil Scar (who died in the original) have lived with revenge in their hearts. The leader, Zira (a spunky turn from Suzanne Pleshette), schemes to use her son Kovu (Jason Marsden) to destroy Simba. As luck with have it, Kiara has bumped into Kovu and fallen in love. This all sounds familiar since all of Disney's straight-to-video sequels have played it very safe, nearly repeating the originals' story, tone, and pace. Perhaps there were too many cooks for this production. Besides the two screenplay credits, there are eight other writers credited for additional written material. The look of the film has none of the surprise of the original but is far superior to other animated videos. In fact, the film played in European theaters. For kids, the sequel will be a favorite. The comic antics of Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumba (Ernie Sabella) are enjoyable, as is Andy Dick as Nuka, the mixed-up older son of Zira. And there's plenty of action. The best element is the music. Relying on more African-influenced music, the five songs featured are far superior to those in Disney's other sequels. Zira's song of revenge, "My Lullaby," was cowritten by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. The standout opening number, "He Lives in You," was created for the Lion King Broadway smash and now finds a whole new audience. --Doug Thomas

This charming movie version of the Nickelodeon cartoon centers on Eliza, youngest daughter of the Thornberry family, whose parents Nigel and Marianne travel the world to create a nature program for television. But Eliza, thanks to a mystical encounter, has the power to talk to animals--a power that leads her on the hunt for poachers in Africa who have captured a baby cheetah. Eliza's best friend, a chimpanzee named Darwin, is along for the ride, while her resentful teenage sister Debbie is trying to bring her back to their parents. The characters in The Wild Thornberrys Movie are well-defined and delightful, the well-written script zips along, and the animation is visually dynamic; all in all, an excellent animated feature. Featuring the voices of Tim Curry, Lacey Chabert, Rupert Everett, Marisa Tomei, Alfre Woodard, and Lynn Redgrave. --Bret Fetzer

The super stylin' Bratz are multicultural dolls with ultra-shiny hair, almond-shaped eyes, and enviably trim figures. Rock Angelz begins when Jade gets a job as an intern for Burdine Maxwell (Just Shoot Me's Wendy Malick), the evil stepmother-like editor of Your Thing. After she gets fired--through no fault of her own--Jade joins Yasmin, Cloe, and Sasha to start their own magazine. Along the way, they travel to London and form a band. The Bratz have even more of a "passion for fashion" than the classic (if less hip) Barbie and their new careers allow for some scorchin' wardrobe changes in this bouncy musical (CD sold separately). There isn't much substance to Rock Angelz, but the pace is brisk, the computer-generated look is vibrant--like Pixar animation crossed with Teen Vogue. The Bratz are joined on their adventures by the happy-go-lucky Bratz Boyz Dylan and Eitan. (Ages 7 to 12) --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The beginning of a new school year is a time of anticipation and opportunity and it's up to viewers to help Bratz girls Cloe, Sasha, Yasmin, and Jade choose this year's activities in this interactive CGI production. By using their remotes, viewers decide whether the Bratz foursome will put on a Broadway show or a talent show, create a pop or rap music video, and determine the format of the yearbook. With two to six distinct paths at each choice point, there are a multitude of possible scenarios, but the separate paths converge following each segment to offer a common set of choices leading into the next scene. While the stylized, sassy Bratz girls exude teen attitude, morality prevails as they work hard and express themselves through acceptable creative activities. Virtues like respect, niceness, and a commitment to education are emphasized in the Bratzline segment in which the girls offer advice on everything from friendship to fashion and party tips. Huckle, Lowly Worm, and rest of the schoolchildren are inspired by their teacher's discussion about different kinds of occupations and what people in those fields do all day. The kids run to the schoolyard for some make-believe, playing at what they'd like to be when they grow up. Huckle becomes a grocer like his father, Freddie Fox a baker specializing in mud pies, and Rhonda Raccoon a truck driver delivering baked goods. Consistent with the usual excellence of the Richard Scarry video series, Best Busy People introduces the concept of how a complicated society functions, with everyone's job having an impact on everyone else's. The jokes are funny, the songs are sweet, and Scarry's popular book What Do People Do All Day? makes great supplementary reading. --Tom Keogh

A painless way of learning a few things about shapes, numbers, letters, opposites, and good manners, Best Learning Songs Video Ever is an engaging treat for young kids who love music. The story finds Huckle Cat and his buddies putting on a backyard variety show that draws the entire town as an audience. With Huck as master of ceremonies and Lowly Worm as stage manager, the children of Busy Town entertain their families and friends with tunes about the fundamentals of an education. Besides Hilda Hippo's ABC song, there's Oly Owl's melody about shapes, and Alex and Anna's song about opposites. There's much more, including a couple of golden oldies such as "If You're Happy and You Know It." A real winner. --Tom Keogh
