Too much surface. Director Lee (The Edge) Tomahori's noir story serves as a McGuffin to its ripe style. Amid secret agendas and unspeakable acts onscreen you stare at the fall of light across old cops' desks. Musing on super-8 footage of naked Jennifer Connelly, your mind wanders. Ah, yes, an allusion to the opening shots of Chinatown. Roman Polanski's grand reinvocation of the dark intuitions of 1940s noir is there, too, in the sumptuous look, the plump list of stars (Nick Nolte, Michael Madsen, Melanie Griffith, John Malkovich), and the swoony, bittersweet soundtrack. The zigzags of the story that bring together two cheating husbands, one pneumatic babe, and (somehow) homosexuality waywardly recall The Big Sleep. The Atomic Energy Commission subplot feels like an homage to Kiss Me Deadly. With so many other movies to please, by the middle of the film it's clear that the story isn't going to thicken, that for all the amperage in Nolte's performance, for all the male rage in Michael Madsen and Chazz Palminteri, the hints of sexual malfeasance aren't going much past Nolte's domestic guilt about his affair with Connelly. And yet there are rich things. Tracing a path from his girlfriend to the head of the Commission (Malkovich), Nolte listens, hat in hand, to a purring existential science lecture about the invisible world of atoms. "Yeah," Nolte growls, "well, I see too much." Would that the filmmakers had let us see more. --Lyall Bush

Super 8

Few filmmakers have ever had a run at the tables like Steven Spielberg, whose output from 1971's Sugarland Express to, say, 1982's E.T. displayed an amazingly unforced melding of huge set pieces and small human gestures. Even at their most chaotic, they somehow felt organic. Super 8, writer-director J.J. Abrams's authorized tribute to classic Spielbergisms, hits all of the marks (Lived-in suburbia backdrop, check. Awestruck gazes upwards, check. Parental discord, check. Lens flares, amazingly huge check), but its adherence to the formula squelches much of its own potential. Appealing as it is to see a summer movie that retro-prioritizes character development over jittery quick-cut explosions, the viewer is always aware at how furiously it's working to seem effortless. Set in 1979, Abrams's script follows a group of movie-crazy kids attempting to make a zombie flick, only to have their plans cut short by a close encounter with a train derailment. As the military pours over the wreckage and neighbors start disappearing, the gang realizes that their footage contains a cameo appearance by an extremely grumpy guest star. For a film whose promotional campaign hinged so strongly on creating an air of mystery, Super 8 is a fairly straightforward melding of E.T. and Jurassic Park, albeit one featuring an oddly schizophrenic monster (he eats people⦠until he doesn't). Abrams makes his young cast shine (particularly when developing a hint of romance between leads Joel Courtney and Elle Fanning), while also providing a nice character arc for Kyle Chandler, as a widowed deputy who can see his relationship with his son slipping away. Aside from a few primo early jolts, however, the creature-feature aspects feel increasingly shoehorned in alongside the more assured coming-of-age elements. Abrams's film has more than enough bright spots to warrant a viewing, but its insistence on worshipfully following the master's playbook is a bit of a bummer. Imitation isn't always flattering. --Andrew Wright
In 1979, a group of small-town Ohio teenagers accidentally films a train wreck while making a Super 8 movie. The sudden arrival of the military and a series of bizarre occurrences prompt the kids to conduct their own investigation, leading them into the middle of a government cover-up of an extraterrestrial that crashed over 20 years earlier. But is the alien visitor friend or foe? Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler star in this sci-fi thriller from writer/director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg. 111 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, DVS, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary; featurettes.

Experience the complete second season of TV's most compelling show in an expansive 27-episode DVD set. Witness every minute of the thrilling drama that has become a television event for fans and critics alike.Life gets even more intense for the doctors and interns of Seattle Grace Hospital in year two as Meredith and Derek's relationship goes from odd to downright insane with the arrival of Derek's wife and Alex lets his Izzie obsession out of the bag. You "can't stop watching" says TV Guide.Experience Grey's Anatomy: Season 2 -- uncut with over five hours of never-before-seen bonus features including four extended episodes with scenes too steamy for TV behind-the-scenes interviews and so much more.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 786936700992 Manufacturer No: 05022700
The medical drama's second season could be diagnosed as bipolar; in other words, it got much worse and much better at the same time. Whiny, self-involved surgical intern Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), arguably the weakest spot in the otherwise likeable ensemble, had already left viewers annoyed. But season two, in which Meredith coped with being dumped by her married McDreamy (a.k.a. neurosurgeon Derek, a.k.a. Patrick Dempsey) by excessive drinking, sleeping around, gazing like a sad puppy and--unforgivable!--breaking the heart of longtime admirer/friend George (the cuddly T.R. Knight), could have alienated audiences for good. (Seriously, sometimes you want to shake the girl and feed her some cookies.) Thankfully, what Meredith's storyline threatened to derail was held together by some emotional episodes, including "Into You Like a Train," in which a pair of strangers are impaled together on a metal pole, and "Much Too Much," featuring a mother's quintuplets in critical condition. But the standout show that turned Grey's Anatomy into a television force came with the January 2006 post-Super Bowl episode, a two-parter involving a "code black" lockdown when a live bomb is housed inside a patient. Romance also remained key to the staff at Seattle Grace: Steely Cristina (Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh) softens, to her great dismay, as her relationship with Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) gets serious; Izzie (Katherine Heigl) pairs up, then breaks up, with Alex (Justin Chambers, the villain of the cast if you had to name one) before falling in love with flirty, tender heart patient Denny (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Derek and estranged wife Addison (Kate Walsh, who somehow managed to win over Meredith-McDreamy fans despite being the Other Woman) make attempts at fixing their marriage, and Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson, easily a standout) tries to balance a medical career with mommyhood. Even George finds a new love with orthopedic surgeon Callie (Sara Ramirez). The season wraps up with a weeper of a two-part finale, set at the hospital during a "prom" (it's complicated). But with the fancy gowns and tuxes, tears and romantic tension, leading to a crossroads for Meredith and Derek, you can bet the episodes are a delight for any Grey's fan. The show also continues to rely heavily on narration (not a good thing) and soundtracks (a good thing), using tracks from artists before they hit it big (KT Tunstall, Brandi Carlisle, Snow Patrol). On the DVD Four of the episodes get an extended treatment, though the tag line "too steamy for television!" is overreaching a bit. Oh is the only actor to turn up on a commentary, which is otherwise just the writers and producers congratulating each other. Walsh turns up the charm in "The Doctors are In," in which characters answer fans' questions, but Chambers appears noticeably drab and disinterested. Despite "Uncut" being in the title, the special features aren't anything you'll be watching again and again. Save that rewind button for the show itself. --Ellen A. Kim

Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 08/17/2010 Starring: Kyle Chandler Connie Britton Rating: Nr
The fourth season of Friday Night Lights begins with Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) in what appears to be a lose-lose situation. Fired from Dillon High School as the Panthers' football coach, Taylor is offered a position coaching the East Dillon Lions. No matter how the school board tries to spin it with platitudes about both schools being equal, East Dillon is rundown, has no funds, and has a football squad that's a team in name only. Of course we all know that Coach Taylor being who he is, it's only a matter of time before he turns the team around and gets a little vengeance on the snooty Panthers. Meanwhile, his wife Tami (Connie Britton) is principal of Dillon High School, where their daughter Julie (Aimee Teegarden) is a senior. Her boyfriend, Matt (Zach Gilford), who had the chance to go to art school in Chicago, stayed behind in the small Texas town because he didn't want to leave behind his grandmother--who's suffering from Alzheimer's--or Julie. Though some of the plot points may sound melodramatic, they play beautifully in the 13 episodes, which originally aired on television during the 2009-2010 season. There are cast changes, reflecting the graduation of some of the characters. Lyla (Minka Kelly) briefly returns from her studies at Vanderbilt to attend a funeral, while Tim (Taylor Kitsch)--the boy she left behind--struggles with his ambivalent feelings for college and his need to help take care of the only family he has: his older brother, sister-in-law, and infant nephew. And new characters like Vince (Michael B. Jordan)--a central part of at least half the story lines--easily fit into the ensemble cast. Meanwhile, Lyla's dad Buddy (played by Brad Leland with just the right combination of sleaze and pathos) turns out to be instrumental in helping get the football program off the ground at East Dillon. Landry (Jesse Plemons) realizes that his on-again, off-again girlfriend is never coming back to him. And he's OK with that as he tackles the challenges of being the new kid at East Dillon. But, as his best friend Matt notes, "he's like a girl" when it comes to holding grudges. There also is major fallout for Tami, who is accused of telling a teenager to end her pregnancy, and trouble for a football player who gets hooked on drugs after an injury. When his religious parents tell him to pray, he does: "Dear Lord, please let me get some more drugs before Friday." There are a few scenarios that ring false, like when the Panthers' star quarterback J.D. McCoy (Jeremy Sumpter) seemingly turns into a malicious, spoiled brat overnight. But overall, Friday Night Lights scores just the right touch. --Jae-Ha Kim

Here are some more information for Kyle Chandler:

As a psychotherapist and coach in private practice in Los Angeles, I use inspiration from hundreds of sources in the things I say to clients that illustrate a point and help them reach their goals. While these inspirations can be from psychological theory, experience with previous clients with similar problems (which is a large database, after 18 years), stories from my friends/colleagues, examples from my own life and relationships, or even "pop" culture of movies and television. My latest source of inspiration comes from the critcally-acclaimed television series, "Friday Night Lights", about a small town in Texas obsessed with its high school football scene, led by the school's head coach, Eric Taylor (played by Kyle Chandler) whose dour, no-nonsense style masks a profound dedication to his players and family. Coach Taylor teaches a phrase that the players use as a final affirmation before taking the field: "Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose." This could apply to more than just football.
For it is ideally with "clear eyes" that we see the challenges we face. When confronting a problem, we try hard not to let an unrealistic perception of the situation, or a distorted view (such as denial) obscure our view of understanding of what is really going on with ourselves and others. How do we see others? Are we getting an accurate picture, or one that is marred by our perceptions (or misperceptions)? Are we able and willing to "see" another person's point of view, without just getting defensive in a conflict? Can we see how they might disagree with us, and still have a valid point that is important to them? Can we empathize with their feelings on why their point of view is treasured by them? Can we see clearly not only our strengths in a situation, but can we also see (if we dare to look) how WE are contributing to conflict and our own unhappiness? Our "clear eyes" are about using our skills of rational thinking and reasoning, and not just being a slave to our immediate (often knee-jerk) feelings.
Similarly, how can we bring "full hearts" to the situation? Are we applying the virtues of forgiveness, tolerance, patience, and compassion? Or, in some cases, having "full hearts" means that we need to bring courage, determination, or even a righteous anger that makes our hearts full to work toward justice? Our full hearts means we're bringing all that we can to the things that are important to us - working it all out in relationships, work, and social interactions.
Coach Taylor's premise is that if we combine the virtues implied in "clear eyes"and "full hearts," the result is that we "can't lose." In his case, he means winning the football game. For us, what does "winning" mean in each situation? Being 'right'? Being happy? Being fulfilled? Being validated? Being calm, with a situation resolved?
Think about to what degree you see yourself, the world around you, and your future with "clear eyes." Identify what gets in the way of a clear view, and eliminate it. Think about what a "full heart" means. If yours isn't as full as it could be, what internal resources (such as courage, determination, compassion) do you need to evoke in yourself? And what would "can't lose" mean to you? How would you recognize the "win" when it happened to you?
If you need help with what these mean for you, consider therapy or coaching. Having clear eyes and a full heart can empower you to... Have the Life You Want!

Deadline Deals for the Nba Trade Deadline
19 of the NBA's 30 teams made trades last season in February. In all, 43 players changed uniforms moving around from team-to-team, division-to-division, and conference-to-conference. Although this season hasn't had as much moves, their has still been just as much talk as last season, keeping ALL fans ears open from each team. There probably won't be as many players moving this season, but there are sure to be several big moves changing teams identities from different perspectives. I'm going to give you several teams that need, and are looking to trade in the next month. I will also give you 10 players likely to be moved. Please leave a comment of your opinion, rate it, and if you really enjoyed it please nominate it.
Top 10 players to be moved in the upcoming month.
10.Earl Watson: Watson is the kind of player who will appeal to a contender looking for experience during the stretch run. Russell Westbrook is breaking out of his shell and is emerging as the starter. Watson is sick of playing with rebuilding teams. Several teams that may be interested in Watson are the Celtics, Nuggets, and the Hawks.
9.Wally Szczerbiak: Wally is currently under a 13 million dollar contract. This makes him appealing to teams looking for salary cap relief. He hasn't been getting as much time since in Cleveland, and he still has the three point touch shooting it 37% from the 3-point line this season. IF Cleveland is looking for a trade, Wally is likely a centerpiece to be used in one.
8.Nick Collison/Chris Wilcox: I definitely see one of these two leaving OKC in the next month. Oklahoma just has far too many forwards. If Oklahoma is looking to get something for one of these two, Collison would probably be the better one to let go. Wilcox is a very underrated 10/10 type of player. Either one of these big man would be a good fit to a franchise as both are good young hustle players.
7.Ramon Sessions: Sessions has played well for the Bucks, but Luke Ridnour is the No. 1 point guard. Sessions is the backup and Milwaukee does not want to give him a new contract this summer that is worth starter's money -- perhaps as much as $5-6 million a year. He's only 22, so he could very easily improve and become a face in a franchise. He'd be perfect to observe and learn on for another year or so with a veteran PG right by his side. He could find these circumstances in Denver, Dallas, and Philadelphia.
6.Mike Conley Jr.: Memphis' Mike Conley Jr. is a former No. 4 overall pick. But he has lost the starting job to Kyle Lowry, a late first-rounder in 2006 who has helped the Grizzlies become more competitive as the season has progressed. Conley is available because Lowry has outplayed him, but his trade value remains high because of his potential and a relatively palatable contract. I don't see Conley so focused on contending for a championship yet, but instead just getting minutes.
5.David Lee: Forward David Lee will attract interest, as his stats have sky-rocketed since D'Antoni has put his offensive system in. The Knicks might be willing to let him go, since he's due for a high-cost contract extension, the Knicks may have to give him up if they still hope to get Lebron in 2010. Averaging 15 points a night and 10 boards, New York would certainly like to receive something for giving him up.
4.Carlos Boozer: Boozer has been a man of much trade talk this season. Before any real offers pour in, Utah and teams interested would like to see Boozer back on the court. Boozer did play well in the six weeks he played this season, averaging 20 points and 11 boards per game. Among those games, he only played 2 with Deron Williams. How he comes off his injury will determine his fate.
3.Raymond Felton: Charlotte point guard Raymond Felton is a likely target of several suitors. Felton was the No. 5 pick in the 2005 draft, taken just behind Utah's Deron Williams and New Orleans' Chris Paul. While he is not considered in their class at this stage of his career, he has been effective. One problem, Charlotte coach Larry Brown likes rookie point guard D.J. Augustin, who now looks like the Bobcats' long-term quarterback. That could make Felton a valuable chip in the poker game leading up to the deadline, since Charlotte could use more size and perimeter shooting.
2.Shawn Marion: The Heat would like to trade small forward Shawn Marion, and his $17 million expiring could interest some teams. The Heat have a few too many forwards jockeying for playing time. Marion is currently involved in some trade talks with the #1 player on my list. They are likely to finalize a trade once the number one player is healthy.
1. Jermaine O'Neal: In Toronto, the Raptors are "very motivated" to trade veteran center Jermaine O'Neal. The improvement of young power forward Andrea Bargnani has made O'Neal expendable. Toronto wants to play Chris Bosh inside and Bargnani on the perimeter -- like the Jazz do with Carlos Boozer and Memo Okur. With O'Neal in the game and playing on the low post, Bosh ends up away from the basket, where he is less effective. Bosh and O'Neal just seem to get in each other's way. Marion could play the Small Forward position, much like he did in Phoenix where he had most of his success. Jermaine can play the Center spot in Miami giving the other forwards more playing time, including rookie Michael Beasley.
Honorable mentions: Eddy Curry (New York), Channing Frye (Portland), Raef LaFrentz (Portland), Corey Maggette (Golden State), Rashad McCants (Minnesota), Andres Nocioni (Chicago), Josh Howard (Dallas), and Brad Miller (Sacramento)
Now for several teams that I think truly need a trade to get back in the mix within their division.
3. Toronto Raptors- Need another jump shooter. They have the physical presence and good point guard, but are lacking that one sharp shooter to compliment Chris Bosh, and relieve him of double-teams. Man like Jason Terry, Shawn Marion, Raja Bell, and Rudy Gay.
2. Dallas Mavericks- Need Big man. Dampier is aging and Dirk Nowitzki is more of a shooting forward than physical forward. In order to keep up with inside monsters like Ming, Duncan, Gasol/Bynum, Shaq/Stoudamire they need a trade. Man like Tyson Chandler, Samuel Dalembart, and Marcus Camby.
1. Boston Celtics- They're missing out on there 6th man. James Posey is proving to be a bigger asset last year than earlier believed. They need a big time 6th man with experience and leadership. Man like Marquis Daniels, Trevor Ariza, and Ronnie Brewer.
