Even before their second fling with the pop mainstream, Aerosmith were one of Top 40's favorite hard-rock bands, so ubiquitous--and so funky--that Run-D.M.C. were vociferous fans. Their '70s output included at least three classic albums (Aerosmith, Toys in the Attic, and Rocks). This disc collects unstoppable singles into a horny, howling little piece of archaeology that makes even weak links like "Kings and Queens" sound great. And the truly great stuff here--"Sweet Emotion," "Last Child," "Dream On"--runs the gamut of style and feeling from swaggering freak-flag-flying to power-ballad roots that display a genuine ache. Your Aerosmith collection shouldn't end here, but this red-and-white bomb is a great place to start. --Rickey Wright

Juice Juice
List Price: $8.99
Sale Price: $3.36

Spike Lee's longtime cinematographer, Ernest R. Dickerson, made his directorial debut with this violent story about four Harlem teens whose lives are changed when a store robbery goes wrong. The film has been likened to an urban The Wild Bunch, but it is far too artificial for that. With Dickerson's eye, Juice understandably looks great, but at the end of the day it is only a slightly better version of the heavily clichéd crime movies that have artificially dominated perceptions of black cinema in the U.S. in the '90s. Rap fans might enjoy seeing some familiar stars on board, including Queen Latifah and Tupac Shakur. --Tom Keogh

A powerful look at contemporary life in Harlem, focusing on an aspiring disc jockey and his teenage friends who have to make a difficult decision: Walk the straight and narrow or lead a life of crime. Eventually, they decide to rob a liquor store in response to an acquaintance's death. Omar Epps, Khalil Kain, Tupac Shakur star; Ernest R. Dickerson, Spike Lee's cinematographer, directs. 94 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English.

Esther Esther
List Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $8.76

The biblical story of Esther, the Jewish woman who saved her people when they faced annihilation, is told in this production featuring British actress Louise Lombard in the title role and F. Murray Abraham as Mordecai, Esther's cousin and foster father. As a girl living under Persian rule, Esther was essentially kidnapped and taken into the harem of the king, Xerxes. The king, taken by her beauty, made her his queen, and as dramatized in the film, she found herself involved in a delicate balancing act between the ruling Persians and her own Jewish people. While this is a fairly elaborate production with a solid supporting cast, it proceeds at a relaxed pace and never quite takes off dramatically. But it does provide a solid telling of Esther's story, and if considered as something of a docudrama, it's successful. The story is clearly told of how the king's chief minister, Haman, had hoped to see the Jews annihilated, but thanks to Esther's intercession the Jews were able to defend themselves and destroy their enemies (events which are celebrated at the Jewish Feast of Purim). The production does provide much of the period flavor of ancient life, and the major facets of the story and portrayals of the characters coincide with biblical accounts. --Robert J. McNamara

The story of the young Jewish girl who captivates the King of Persia and urges him to show mercy on her people features an all-star cast that includes F. Murray Abraham, Jurgen Prochnow, Ornella Muti, and Louise Lombard as Esther. 91 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English (SDH).

Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke On the Blu-raySleeping Beauty was the last and most lavish of Walt Disney's animated fairy tales. He told the artists not to hurry and to give him "a moving illustration": The film required almost four and one-half years and one million finished drawings. Instead of the 19th century storybook illustrations that had influenced the look of Snow White and Pinocchio, the artists adapted the flattened perspective and jewel-like colors of 15th century French illuminated manuscripts. The results remain unmatched for sheer visual opulence. However, Sleeping Beauty suffers from a weak story: the vision of an ageless princess slumbering in a vine-shrouded tower was replaced with elements of Snow White and a boy-meets-girl musical. The evil Maleficent and the three Good Fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather) dominate the film, rather than Princess Aurora and Prince Philip. Sleeping Beauty was originally released in 70mm, and the Blu-ray edition restores the film to its original splendor. (Many earlier releases trimmed the wide-screen images and/or muted the glowing palatte.) The Bonus DVD looks good on a flat screen monitor, but it pales in comparison to the richness of the Blu-ray. In addition to the commentaries and a making-of documentary, the set includes myriad extras that vary widely in quality. Nostalgia buffs will enjoy the recreation of the old Sleeping Beauty's Castle attraction in Disneyland, and the TV program "Four Artists Paint One Tree" provides a welcome showcase for key talents from the film. But the CG animation of the dragon and the voice imitations of the Good Fairies fail to capture the magic of the originals in the "Dragon Encounter"; the "Maleficent's Challenge Game"--a hi-tech Twenty Questions--sounds only vaguely like the redoubtable sorceress. The BD-Live features require an awful lot of bother: after wading through (or ignoring) 130 screens of legalese, participants must enter their Social Security number or other personal information in the drawn-out sign-on process. Once that's finally done, viewers can send special messages to pop up during the film, chat online with others who are watching, and view it in synch with others. The question is whether or not you want to. (Rated G: violence) --Charles Solomon Stills from Sleeping Beauty (Click for larger image)

A beautiful princess born in a faraway kingdom is destined by a terrible curse to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep which can only be awakened by true love's first kiss. Though the titular princess is on par with the rest of Disney's essential heroines, most of the fun arises from the trio of charming fairies entrusted with her care: Flora, Fauna, and Meriweather. Meanwhile the evil Malificent may just be Disney's most chilling villainess. This classic makes wondrous use of Tchaikovsky's same-titled ballet score, which earned SLEEPING BEAUTY an Academy Award nomination for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.

This film and Hello Dolly were the knockout blows to the studio movie musical, but Paint doesn't deserve its tarnished name. Ben Rumson (Lee Marvin) takes the model of a rakish derelict to an unequaled high as a prospector who teams up with a greenhorn named Pardner (Clint Eastwood), and they both end up marrying the same scorned woman (Jean Seberg). No-Name City, the prospecting town they found, is Sodom and Gomorrah without the camels, and a vision of humanity left to its own devices. The songs are mostly wonderful melodies from Lerner and Loewe, with definite high points, notably "They Call the Wind Maria" and "Wand'rin' Star." Clint Eastwood always gets flack for his versions of "I Still See Elisa" and "I Talk to the Trees," but that scorn is equally undeserved. Perhaps Paint's biggest sin, in retrospect, was trying to combine the aesthetics of the musical with the aesthetics of the male protagonists' world-weary machismo. Not the easiest task, but Paint pulls it off. --Keith Simanton

Joyful Noise (DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy) Joyful Noise (DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy)
List Price: $28.98
Sale Price: $11.50

The larger-than-life personalities of Oscar nominees Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah help to buoy Joyful Noise, a lightweight comedy-musical about two strong-minded women who clash over the direction of a small-town church choir. The friction is set in motion by a surprisingly callous bit of business, in which Parton is informed by her pastor (Courtney B. Vance) that the church board has planned to deny her the position of church choir director, recently vacated by the death of her husband (Kris Kristofferson), in favor of Latifah. Never mind that the announcement is made at Kristofferson's funeral service, where one might assume that even a woman with such inordinate spunk as Parton might be in a state of grief; it's one of never-mind-the-details-let's-get-to-the-singing decision that writer-director Todd Graff (Bandslam) makes throughout the picture, which renders much of the film's many dramatic elements somewhat facile. And there are quite a few elements from which to choose, including a romance between Parton's cocky grandson (Jeremy Jordan) and Latifah's daughter (Keke Palmer), Latifah's Asperger's-afflicted son, or any of the genuinely silly issues involving the choir members. Joyful Noise is ultimately a mess of loosely connected elements that viewers are asked to accept in a particularly haphazard arrangement, but for many, the storyline will be a tolerable bridge between musical numbers, which admittedly are the film's strongest selling point. Thankfully, these are in good hands, with veteran producer-composer Mervyn Warren (The Preacher's Wife) handling the score and gospel powerhouse Kirk Franklin in the cast, and both Parton and Latifah get to display their formidable vocal talents. But it's a long and largely tiresome slog to these moments, which may have viewers making frequent use of their player's fast-forward button. Extras on the Joyful Noise Blu-ray are also fairly slim, with talking-head interviews with Graff and his stars balanced by extended musical numbers and a live clip of the cast and singers at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. --Paul Gaita

In a small Georgia town, the newly appointed church choir director (Queen Latifah) clashes with her late predecessor's feisty widow (Dolly Parton). Adding fuel to their fiery feud is the budding romance between Latifah's daughter (Keke Palmer) and Parton's grandson (Jeremy Jordan). Can these two strong-willed women work together in order to get the choir ready for a national competition? Spirited musical comedy also stars Courtney B. Vance and Kris Kristofferson. 118 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; featurettes.

King Queens

Not in Bible But in Quran (12); King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba

King Solomon and the Queen in the Quran:

The Hoopoe did as Solomon commanded, dropped the letter and the Queen took that letter, read it and went to meet her entourage for an emergency meeting. The Queen of Sheba told her chieftains that a noble letter that is worthy of respect has been delivered to her. It is from Solomon and its (first line) text says: "In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, and the Merciful. And its text is frightful, it says: "Do not exalt yourselves against me; do not feel too haughty towards me, and come unto me (in surrender) in submission (to the true religion).

She said, 'O [members of the] council, give me an opinion and advise me about what to do. I never decide on a matter, I never conclude it, until you are present and advise me.'

They said: We are the masters of might and of great prowess; we have weapons and we are enduring and hardy in war. The matter is for you to decide. So see what you will command', us, and we will obey you.

Then she pronounced words of wisdom. (She said: Lo! Kings) worldly kings, (when they enter a country) by force in instances of war and fighting, (ruin it) destroy it (and make the honour of its people shame and humiliate its nobles) by beating, killing and exposing them to other things. And thus they (always) do; this is how worldly kings behave because of arrogance.

Now I will send Solomon a gift and wait to see with what [response] the envoys return', in the way of accepting the gift or rejecting it. If Solomon is only a king seeking power and wealth, he will accept it; but if he is a prophet, he will reject it. Thus, she sent male and female servants, one thousand in total, together with five hundred bricks of gold, a crown studded with jewels, and musk, ambergris and other things with an envoy carrying a letter. The hoopoe thus hurried back to bring the news to Solomon.

But when the envoy, came to Solomon, with the gift and the servants, he said, 'Are you supplying me with wealth? What Allah has given me, of prophet hood and kingship, is better than what He has given you, of [the things of] this world. Nay, but it is you [and not I] who exult in your gift, for you pride yourselves upon [the possession of] the ornaments of this world!

Go back to them, with the gifts that you have brought, for We shall assuredly come to them with hosts (that they cannot resist) which they will not be able to face and they have no power to stop and we shall expel them from there, from the land of Sheba humiliated, and they shall be utterly abased', (with shame) with their hands tied to their necks, unless they come to me in submission. When the envoy returned to her with the gift, she had her throne placed inside seven doors inside her palace, with her palace inside seven palaces, and had all the doors locked with guards at them. She then prepared to make the journey to Solomon to see what he would command her. She departed with twelve thousand chieftains, each accompanied by thousands [of men] until when she came to within few miles of him, he sensed her arrival.

Now, King Solomon thought to surprise her!

Surah (Chapter) 27:29-37

29] She (the queen of Sheba) said: 'o council, look, an honorable letter has been dropped to me.

30] Lo! It is from Solomon and it is "in the name of Allah, the merciful, the most merciful."

31] "Exalt not yourselves against me and come to me (in surrender) in submission (to the true religion).'"

32] She said: "ye chiefs! Advise me in my affair: no affair have I decided except in your presence."

33] They said: we are possessors of force and possessors of mighty prowess, and the command is yours, therefore see what you will command

34] She said: "kings, when they enter a country, damage it, ruin it and humiliate its nobles. And thus they (always) do;

35] But lo! I am going to send him a present, and (wait) to see with what (answer) my messengers return.

36] Now when (the envoy) came to Solomon, he said: "what! Would ye help me with wealth? Will ye give me abundance in wealth? But that which Allah has given me is better than that which he has given you! Nay it is ye who exult and rejoice in your gift!

37] "go back to them, and be sure we shall come to them with such hosts as they will never be able to meet: we shall expel them from there in disgrace, and they will feel humbled and shall be in a state of ignominy (indeed)."

King Solomon and the Queen in the Bible:

The Biblical story is found in 1 Kings 10:1-13 (and also in 2 Chronicles 9); it can be summarized as follows:

The queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove him with hard questions. And Solomon told her all her questions. She realized that Solomon's wisdom and prosperity exceeds the fame which she heard. Then she gave the King a lot of gifts. Moreover, Solomon gave the queen all her desire, beside that which He gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned
