The dirtiest four-letter word for moms is not poop. It's quit. If you're like me, depended upon by more than just your baby, you know it's never an option. Otherwise laundry piles, dinner goes uncooked, and the diapers...ugh, you can imagine what happens there when they are neglected.

What inspired me to write today about quitting, rather the determination not to, is a recent series of posts from CBS' Eye on Parenting by Natali Morris. If you keep track of cloth diapering issues, you'll know Morris (after being challenged to try cloth after a controversial post on her blog) agreed to cloth diaper her baby for 30 days to learn for herself the difference it makes. Well, after the first day, she realized after more commentary from veteran cloth diaper users that perhaps she had not started prepared. Rather than quit, however, she agreed to start fresh - literally and figuratively - armed with a strong knowledge on washing and inventory.

Now, some might argue that since Morris is doing this not only for her family but for CBS's audience, she is obliged to see the challenge through. Sadly, it happens that mothers who try cloth under similar circumstances may throw in the towel along with the diaper cover when they perceive it's too difficult to handle. Transitioning to cloth is somewhat like dieting. You go in with the best of intentions, but that first day you fall victim to a smooth red velvet cake you decide losing weight is a losing proposition, so you fall back into old habits.

It doesn't have to be that way. If you cheat on your diet, what should you do? Shake it off and get back in the game. Same with diapering - if you find you have caved and reached for a Huggies instead of the all in one, don't view the move as failure. Think about what prompted you to backtrack, and work out how you will do things differently next time. Maybe you didn't have enough pre-folds for the day, or didn't schedule laundry to finish at the needed time. Make the adjustments and get back on track.

That Morris' month-long venture into cloth is called a "challenge" sort of bothers me, because once you get the hang of using these amazing diapers there's no challenge at all. It becomes second nature, and what's more natural than an environmentally friendly way of keeping your baby happy and healthy?
