Folies Bergères: A Place To Witness Jaw Dropping Performances

Folies Bergères is one of the most famous and eminent performance centres in Paris. It is also among the world’s most admired classic cabarets.
Offering more than a century of entertainment, Folies Bergères has hosted legendary performances by Maurice Chevalier, Charlie Chaplin, Benny Hill, Colette the French writer, Edith Pilaf and the famed Josephine Baker.
Inspired by London Alhambra music hall, renowned architect Plumeret created Folies Bergères as an outstanding Opera House and the venue was open to the public in May 1869. Initially it was named Folies Trévise. However, the famous nobleman Duc de Trévise did not want the public to feel as if though he was linked to this performance centre. Consequently, in September 1872, the name Folies Bergères came to be. This name derived from a street located nearby called the Rue Bergère.
This astounding Parisian music hall reached its peak of popularity during the period of 1890 to 1920. Since then many world renowned comedian operas, gymnastics, dances and operettas have been held here.

Well known painter Édouard Manet who frequently visited this music hall with his friends created a painting titled ‘A Bar at theFolies-Bergère’. The picture portrays a bar-girl facing a mirror.
