Genius Loves Company

The fact that Genius Loves Company will be Ray Charles's final new album inspires an unavoidable blue feeling. But it's also a happy reminder that the man spent the last months of his life at work doing what he loved. The overall effect of these dozen duets is autumnal and smooth. Brother Ray is on point and cruising here. Fine moments abound--you can hear his delight even in the rather stiff company of Diana Krall and Natalie Cole. His voice sounds a bit frayed by ill health at times, but it also allows for great performances like the slyness behind the ache in his version of the old soul hit "Hey Girl" with Michael McDonald and a grand "Crazy Love" with Van Morrison. Potently, he and Gladys Knight remind us of the continued timeliness of Stevie Wonder's "Heaven Help Us All." Its best moments make Company one more essential purchase for Ray Charles fans. --Rickey Wright

John Travolta traded in disco duds for a cowboy hat in this corny love story about a working man who breaks up with his girlfriend (Debra Winger), then plays out their relationship's turmoil inside a huge honky-tonk called Gilley's. The story essentially parallels Travolta's prior hit film, Saturday Night Fever, in its blend of ordinary life, incomplete relationships, and personal pride channeled into niche stardom at a neighborhood club. But for all its regional flavor, Urban Cowboy never enjoys the immediacy and urgency of Fever, and after awhile you can't help but feel bemused by the macho silliness of ongoing "mechanical bull" competitions (basically a faux rodeo device only brave men can master at great chiropractic risk). The Travolta-Winger relationship is pure soap, as well. But this film really is a kind of time-capsule piece on a lot of levels--notably Travolta's career and late '70s Western kitsch--and while it's silly, it's certainly not disagreeable. --Tom Keogh

Lightning in a Bottle
List Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $6.82

Part concert, part history lesson, part summit meeting, and all blues, Lightning in a Bottle puts a bright spotlight on this quintessential American music. There are some heavy hitters at work here, both behind the camera (Martin Scorsese executive produced, while the film was directed by Antoine Fuqua of Training Day and King Arthur) and especially in front of it, with a superb house band and a mind-boggling array of musicians (including B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Solomon Burke, Keb' Mo', Macy Gray, the Neville Brothers, Robert Cray, and John Fogerty, to name but a few) performing at New York's Radio City Music Hall in February, 2003. The idea was to trace the music from its beginnings; thus we get an African song (by Angelique Kidjo), some early gospel blues (the great Mavis Staples), acoustic Delta blues, and so on, right up to blues-drenched electric rock and even some rap (a riveting version of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" by Chuck D.). Virtually all of the immortals who defined the blues (Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and even Jimi Hendrix, whose fiery style is re-enacted by Buddy Guy) enter the picture, either through vintage film clips or new performances of their songs. One might wish for more insight into the influence of the blues on jazz (Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit," sung here by India.Arie, is a fine song, but it's not a blues tune) or country, but overall, Lightning in a Bottle is an edifying and, most important, highly entertaining portrait of the music and its heritage. --Sam Graham

Delphi, South Dakota is a dusty little prairie town, the kind people drive through on their way to bigger cities. But as Tory Bauer, middle-aged, widowed, overweight, cranky waitress might say, "Everything that happens in big towns, happens here too. We just don't look as good naked."In Funeral Food, the first of six mysteries featuring the crew at the Delphi Café, Tory would like nothing more than to get through the hot June days waiting tables, and her nights reading mysteries and thinking about the married Stu McKee. The last thing she wants is to be involved with a real-life mystery, but when a handsome young Mormon Missionary is found, dead, in the café's mop closet, Tory is drawn into the investigation, and what she discovers shakes the foundations of her small town world.

Here are some more information for John Raitt:

Mose John Allison Jr, or just Mose Allison as we know him, is one the many jazz legends that has contributed to jazz and blues. Born on 11th of November 1927. Mose's fascination with music started when he discovered an ability to replay the tunes that he heard on the jukebox. He took a liking to boogie and blues tunes. He pursued his love for music playing in bands, playing the trumpet in his school band and was even writing his own tunes when he was just in school.
His inspiration at the time were the chartbusters of his time - Louis Jordan, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Duke Wellington, Fats Waller and the likes. Even when he joined the army in 1946, he pursued his love for music by playing in bands and entertaining army folks. He played with many of the top musicians and bands nationwide during this period of time.
After he had done his time in the Army, he went back to music and joined a dance band as trumpet player, piano player and arranger. But he moved on from there and went on to form his own band of three who followed the musical styling of his favorite musicians - Nat King Cole and Louis Jordan.
After almost a year of incessant touring, he married his wife and went to college to finish a BA in English and Philosophy. Upon completion of his education, he went back to music and carried on playing in small clubs. His influences grew and to the list were added Mercy Mayfield, Charles Brown, John Lewis, Thelonius Monk and Al Haig.
His hard work paid off as Mose was appreciated and encouraged by his fans. He came to New York like every other musician at the time wanted to to make it big. In 1957, he got himself a recording contract with Prestige Records and recorded his first album - Back Country Suite - which was well appreciated and got critical acclaim. The success saw him perform with more of the greats of his time including his own Mose Allison Trio.
Then on it's just history in the making, with Mose Allison breaking more barriers and pushing the bill further each time. He inspired many a great artiste just like he was inspired when he started out. His music is the best combination blues, jazz and some very good lyrics - mostly humorous. Mose Allison is admired because he got all these three together in the just the right proportion which only speaks of his genius. The Who's Pete Townsend and ex Rolling Stone Bill Wyman have quoted him as their inspiration.
All the top artists of the world in all genres have covered his songs - the most revered among whom are Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, The Yardbirds and Bonnie Raitt. Blues singer Van "The Man" Morrison has even recorded an entire album in tribute to the man titled Tell Me Something, The Songs of Mose Allison in 1995. A one hour documentary Mose Allison; Ever Since I Stole the Blues directed by Paul Barnays was testimony to the fact that the intricateness and the intimateness of his music has to date made him the most well known jazz musician in the UK.
His Live 2001 release Mose Chronicles, Live in London, Vol.I won him a Grammy. The follow-up volume was his last release but there have been re-releases of his music in the past few years. A 2006 Long Island Music Hall Of Fame inductee, Mose, now in his 80th year, is still performing worldwide.
Mose's present residence is on Long Island,New York where he stays with his wife of more than 57 years. They have together have four children. Their daughter Allisa is an attorney while their other daughter is country star Amy Allison. They have one more daughter Janine is a working psychiatrist while the couples only son John is a Telecommunication specialist.
There have been many tributes to Mose Allison in many forms. While they will keep on coming, we can be sure that the 80 year old Allison is only going to play better and better while he tries to give himself room for improvement.

The Journey of a New York Personal Trainer
Mike Creamer has been a New York personal trainer for twenty years. Before moving to New York in the mid 1980s Mike managed a gym in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland where he trained a couple of musicians from a local band who were about to make a name for themselves in the U.S. That band was U2 and those musicians were Bono and bass player Adam Clayton. Soon after moving to New York Mike was introduced to the actress Cher's nyc personal trainer JP at a post U2 concert party. JP arranged an interview for Mike with the owners of the premier nyc personal training company Plus One.
Mike was hired by Plus One and soon became acquainted with other new york personal trainers. Located in a private and discreet Soho loft, Plus One catered to a celebrity clientele that included famous actors, actresses and artists. While working at Plus One Mike was one of the most sought after new york personal trainers and his clients included John Kennedy (JFK) Jnr. and Bonnie Raitt.
When Plus One opened their new headquarters facility at the World Financial Center in downtown Manhattan, Mike was selected to head a team of new york personal trainers that could meet the unique needs and demands of their executive corporate clientele. Plus One WFC was hailed as a new kind of fitness center or "fitness clinic" that integrated the fields of sports medicine and exercise science. Plus One WFC housed orthopedic offices with x-ray facility, a full-time staff of physical therapists, nutritionists and a team of the best new york personal trainers, all under one roof. Sadly Plus One WFC (located literally across the street from the World Trade Center) closed its doors on September 11th 2001 and never reopened. However the Plus One brand made a full recovery and is now the premier provider of corporate fitness and wellness services in the U.S.
Mike's ambition was always to own his own gym and in 1998 he opened his nyc personal training studio, Anatomically Correct, located just blocks away from the original Plus One studio in Soho where he got his start in the business ten years earlier. Plus One is no longer there, replaced by an Equinox club with its own staff of new york personal trainers.
Anatomically Correct, located at 142 Wooster Street just a few blocks away from Equinox, distinguishes itself from larger clubs by offering a more private and focused training environment, just like the original Plus One studio. The quality of training and service is superior and this appeals to a more discerning clientele. Plus it has the added benefit of being owned and operated by one of the best new york personal trainers who has a vested interest in his customers success. This is not always the case with other new york personal trainers who typically work on a salary basis for a large club.
Just because you have a new york personal trainer it doesn't necessarily mean you are training correctly. Experience the difference for yourself and sign up for a Free training session with the best new york personal trainer. Train the Anatomically Correct way with nyc personal trainer Mike Creamer.

Well to be honest with you your list is only half right. Starting from the birth of these two very solid guitars (I own three American Fender Stratocasters, a 54 Vintage Relic Stratocasters, a J-500 Gibson Acoustic, a NOS Fender Esquire-first Telecaster-, and a Jimmy Page Custom Shop Les Paul) the sound quality and feel have been valuable to so many different styles and players and often times choosing the best between the two is rather pointless. In general, the Strat is known for its bright, smooth single-coil sound with the traditional bodies being made of the light Alder wood. This tone has been able to be shaped from the grungiest sounds of Nirvana to the amazing shred guitar of Malmsteen and Roth. On the other hand the Gibson Les Paul is known for its (generally) heavier wood and humbucking pickups which have produced a thick, crunchy sound. Of course neck, fretboard, and body types all vary the sound the distinguishing feature about these guitars is that they are all vastly different from model to model. The Japanese Fender Stratocasters from the late 80s which are now sought after can have the "heavy" sound that some claim only the Les Paul can get. You can really play any style on either guitar and with the right set up of amp and effects can overcome both guitars downsides. As for the players you listed....
Jeff Beck - Teles, Strats, and Les Pauls (Blow By Blow era)
Eric Clapton - Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, and SGs
The Edge - Strats, Explorers, Teles, SGs, and Les Pauls

Joe Walsh - Strats, Les Pauls
Al DiMeola - Strats, Les Pauls
Kirk Hammett - LTD/ESP Custom Shop Model and Strats
Mark Knopfler - Strats!!!!!!
Joe Perry - Strats

Mose Allison: Cover to Cover
By his own count, pianist-composer Mose Allison has written about 150 songs in his singular, 60-year career, but he can be forgiven for not knowing the number of artists who’ve recorded his compositions. The tally, after all, is always rising here and overseas.
