This remake of the 1996 Japanese film that set unlikely box office records in its native country turns more on a sexy, cinematic dance revivalism than the charms of stars Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. While its soundtrack never veers far from that noble task, it gratifyingly jolts its familiar rumbas and tango rhythms with a few modern musical kicks all its own. Pussycat Dolls' crisp, sensuous take of the standard "Sway" may subtly juice tradition, but Gotan Project's "Santa Maria" gives those familiar Latin rhythms a downright savory electronica makeover. Producer/arranger John Altman underscores tradition via his versions of chestnuts both lively ("Happy Feet") and ethno-apropos ("Espana Cani," "Perfidia," "Andalucia") and even a suitably schmaltzy cover of Mancini's signature "Moon River." Altman's sturdy musical background helps focus songs as diverse as Peter Gabriel's bittersweet "The Book of Love" and Gizelle O'Cole/Pilar Montenegro's vibrant, modern Latin-inflected title song, Jamie Cullum's club-beat-meets-lounge take on "I Could Have Danced All Night" and Miya's slinky, hip-hop seasoned remake of Bowie's "Let's Dance." --Jerry McCulley

The hit Broadway musical by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards became the basis for this 1972 film about America's first congress and the nation's declaration of independence from Britain. Most of the original cast members are aboard, including William Daniels as John Adams. The film is a little stodgy and moves stiffly from scene to scene--the adaptation to the screen is not a smooth success. But it is nonetheless captivating, considering that so few films have dealt directly with America's birth. Directed by Peter H. Hunt. --Tom Keogh

George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) directed this adaptation of James Michener's novel about the history of the 50th state. Max von Sydow plays a zealous missionary with a Calvinist bent, intent on enlightening the natives even as his wife (Julie Andrews) is romanced by the dashing Richard Harris. The film is both a glossy vision of Hawaii in the early 19th century and a sometimes-brutal drama full of death, a rough childbirth, stormy weather, etc. Hill's blunt editing, meant to emphasize the more terrifying aspects of the natural order of life, makes the film look particularly dated and mannered today. This is best appreciated for its cast, all of whom were making inroads in Hollywood at the time. --Tom Keogh

The northern lights are shining down on all 24 hilarious, offbeat episodes of The Complete Fifth Season of the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning series Northern Exposure! Reunite with Dr. Joel Fleischman (Emmy nominee Rob Morrow), Maggie (Emmy nominee Janine Turner), Chris (Emmy nominee John Corbett) and the rest of the beloved and quirky residents of Cicely, Alaska, as they take on evil spirits, cannibalistic ancestors and the birth of a new resident. Digitally restored for outstanding picture and audio quality, this 5-disc collection brings all the heartwarming episodes of Season Five to DVD for the first time ever. Follow the moose to fun today! Starring: Rob Morrow, Janine Turner, John Corbett, Barry Corbin
Welcome back to Cicely, Alaska, where whimsy and magical realism are always in season. While Northern Exposure's heart is as big as all outdoors, its charms are starting to wear a little thin in its penultimate season, particularly John Cullum's New Age-y DJ McDreamy, Chris (one longs for that season 1 episode in which he lost his voice). But there is compensation in such sweet, unexpected moments as the one in "A River Doesn't Run Through It," in which bush pilot Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner) finds the tape recorder of Dr. Joel Fleishman (Rob Morrow), who is out in the field, and, missing his voice, sits down to listen to one of his tapes. The long-awaited thawing of what Joel calls their "bizarre" relationship is this season's biggest development. Their efforts to "go out" and be nicer to each other are frustrated by such nuisances as a dust-mite allergy ("Mite Makes Right"). Another blessed event is the birth of Shelley's (Cynthia Geary) so-called "Little Pooper," but not before she freaks at impending motherhood ("Baby Blues") and has a series of laundromat encounters with her future child at different stages in her life, from Barbie-playing adolescent to aspiring Dallas Cowboy cheerleader ("Hello, I Love You"). Aspiring young filmmaker and shaman Ed (Darren E. Burrows) finds himself at a crossroads in "Rosebud," one of his better episodes, in which he is charged with organizing a film festival to put Cicely on the map. Peter Bogdanovich, as himself, regales one and all with his Orson Welles stories, and encourages Ed to finally make a movie. A quintessential love-it-or-hate-it Northern Exposure episode is "Mr. Sandman," in which the Northern Lights cause the residents to swap their dreams. The season ends on a heartwarming grace note with "Lovers and Madmen," in which Joel, who has always kept himself aloof from the close-knit community (in "Rosebud," he resists joining the volunteer fire department), at last accepts that he has become a "Cicelian," after discovering a frozen wooly mammoth. Too bad the series couldn't have ended here before finally jumping the caribou in its last season. --Donald Liebenson

Recipient of 39 Emmy nominations and winner of the Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for Outstanding Drama Series, Northern Exposure comes to an offbeat and inspirational conclusion. For this final season, newcomer Dr. Phil Capra (Paul Provenza) joins Dr. Joel Fleischman (Emmy nominee Rob Morrow), Maggie (Emmy nominee Janine Turner), Chris (Emmy nominee John Corbett) and the rest of the quirky citizens of Cicely, Alaska. Digitally restored for optimum picture quality, this must-own five-disc set includes all 23 beloved episodes and over 30 minutes of never-before-seen deleted scenes. See the finale of this groundbreaking, heartwarming adventure that's as stunning as the Northern Lights themselves! Starring: Rob Morrow, Janine Turner, John Corbett
And so, the sun sets on Cicely, Alaska. While Northern Exposure somewhat jumped the moose in its last season, there are enough characteristically "weird, almost surreal" moments to make season 6 a nice place to revisit. The auspicious season opener, "Dinner at Seven Thirty," is a typically disarming and disorienting quirk fest that recasts the characters in a parallel New York universe. Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) is married to a high society (and high maintenance) Shelly (Cynthia Geary), Maggie (Janine Turner) is their au pair, Ed (Darrin E.Burrows) is an Armani clad corporate raider, Holling (John Cullum) is a Piano Man, Ruth-Anne (Peg Phillips) is the leader of an internal medicine group, Chris (John Corbett) is an inarticulate fashion photographer, and Maurice (Barry Corbin) is the luxury-highrise doorman. "I'd rather practice medicine in some hick rural outback than stay here another minute," Joel rebels, returning things to what passes for normal in Cicely. Another early gem is "The Robe," with guest star Charles Martin Smith (American Graffiti) as no less than the Devil who tries to corrupt Shelly. But then the series goes off the beaten path. Joel, following a bumpy courtship with Maggie, goes "Up River" to live in a remote fishing village (His final episode is the bittersweet, "The Quest," in which he departs for good for his "jeweled city"). Enter new doctor Phillip Capra (Paul Provenza) and his journalist wife, Michelle (Teri Polo), brie-eating yuppies from Los Angeles. < I>Northern Exposure remained a fish-out-of-water comedy, but these two characters are as bland as tilapia. Though not nearly the hard cases that a resistant Joel was, they, too, succumb to Cicely's charms, and by series' end, Michelle is having hallucinatory forest chats with Joel's former New York rabbi. Happily, the rest of the characters are still good company. Between Ruth-Anne and trapper Walt (Moultrie Patten) and Maurice (Corbin) and Officer Barbara Semanski (Diane Delano), love really blossoms this season. But as Iris Dement sings in the heartbreaking lament, "Our Town," which ends this series on a lovely grace note (and is one of the few originally broadcast songs to survive the transition to DVD), "Nothing good ever lasts." Northern Exposure lasted six seasons, which is good enough. To paraphrase a postcard Joel sends to Maggie in "The Quest," Cicely is a state of mind, and thanks to DVD, there is no need to "kiss it goodbye." --Donald Liebenson

Sergeant York (Christian Encounters Series)

It was a bitter-cold morning on October 8, 1918. Six hundred American soldiers were surrounded by the German army near the Argonne Forest in France. Corporal Alvin York's unit was ordered out of the trenches and into battle against an enemy armed with machine guns. York was eventually pinned down among his dead and injured comrades. What happened next was a feat of bravery and military skill that would amaze his countrymen, change his life, and etch his place in the history books. Born in a two-room log cabin in the hills of northern Tennessee, York was a bona fide backwoodsman who had taken numerous prizes at turkey shoots back home. His marksmanship served him well that morning in WWI. By the time he reached the U.S. position, York and his few remaining companions were marshaling a parade of 132 enemy soldiers. His feat knocked the wind out of a planned German counterattack. Not bad for a former conscientious objector. In this Christian Encounters biography, learn more about York's struggles with being a Christian and a soldier and how this simple man showed a nation the meaning of the word hero.

THE MAN IN THE BLACK SUIT FOUR UNABRIDGED DARK TALES FROM STEPHEN KING The Man in the Black Suit Read by John Cullum "...the face of the man in the black suit grows ever clearer, ever closer, and I remember every word he said. I don't want to think of him, but I can't help it, and sometimes at night my old heart beats so hard and so fast I think it will tear itself right clear of my chest." A haunting recollection of a mysterious boyhood event, The Man in Black Suit read by John Cullum leads off this masterful collection from Stephen King. Other dark tales include: All That You Love Will Be Carried Away read by Peter Gerety, in which a man checks into a Lincoln, Nebraska Motel 6 to find the meaning in his life; That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French read by Becky Ann Baker presents the ultimate case of déejàa vu; and The Death of Jack Hamilton read by Arliss Howard -- a blistering tale of Depression-era outlaws on the run. Here are some more information for John Cullum:

Across Norfolk, there is a great tradition of live shows that range from major outdoor concerts, through to small but popular amateur dramatic shows that have a loyal following and seaside spectaculars.
If you come up to the county over the Christmas period, staying in one of the Norfolk boutique hotels is a wonderful experience. But one thing you must take in is a seasonal trip to the pantomime.
The Theatre Royal in Norwich hosts an ever-popular panto but is also a great auditorium for a wide range of shows throughout the year including dance, West End-style performances, comedy and drama.
But many of the market towns have good theatres, along with the coastal resorts.
Cromer, for example, has a marvelous theatre at the end of the pier and every summer stages a seasonal show that is popular with locals and visitors alike.
With several Norfolk pubs or Norfolk restaurants close by, there's no shortage of places to have a drink before or after the performance or have a tasty dinner and combine it with a night out at the theatre.
Most North Norfolk hotels will have details of local theatres, current and future presentations and where to get tickets from, so it's easy to take in a show during a break in Norfolk.
In recent years, Norfolk has successfully hosted a number of major outdoor concerts.
The natural arena at Thetford Forest hosts a series of summer pop concerts with people like Jamie Cullum, Van Morrison and The Doves appearing while Holkham Hall has seen stars such as Elton John perform in the shadow of one of Norfolk's best-known stately homes.
Among the pioneers of such outdoor concerts has been the National Trust with its series of concerts at Blickling Hall which has seen Simply Red, Bryan Ferry and Tom Jones on the bill over the past few years.
A great tradition has been to take a picnic, table and chairs, along with a bottle of wine or Champagne, and sit and dine al fresco while enjoying the live music on a pleasant summer evening in a magical setting. It's one of Norfolk's perfect experiences.
Kerry Miller is a keen traveller who has enjoyed staying in some of the finest North Norfolk hotels, while eating in some excellent Norfolk Restaurants
