Concert for Bangladesh

Before We Are the World, before the Amnesty International concerts, before Live Aid, Live 8, 46664, and all the other charitable and/or political events that have used popular music as their principal draw, there was George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh, a stirring affair released here in a fine two-disc set. The cause--raising money for the beleaguered people of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan), who were ravaged by war, floods, and famine--was enough to attract the support of stars like the former Beatle, who had never fronted a band before, along with Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton, both of whom had been out of the limelight for some years due to various personal problems and choices. Given the little time that Harrison, whose help had been solicited by sitar master Ravi Shankar, had to organize the affair, the results are very impressive indeed: the enormous band, which also features Ringo Starr, Leon Russell, and Billy Preston, is tight, the music (spotlighting tunes from Harrison's All Things Must Pass, along with a few Beatle numbers) inspired, the musicians at the top of their games. (Only Clapton is sub-par; looking out of it and playing weakly, he's a far cry from the guy who, some 30 years later, would spearhead the magnificent Concert for George.) For some, the opportunity to see Dylan onstage with Harrison, Starr, and Russell (playing bass) will be the big attraction. Others will thrill to the remastered DVD sound and restored picture. Still others will revel in an entire disc of bonus material, including three previously-unreleased performances and a documentary featuring new interviews with many of the participants. 1971 was a bleak period in rock history; the Beatles had broken up, Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison were dead, Woodstock was a distant memory. The Concert for Bangladesh shone like a beacon, a revelation of the better angels that reside within us all. And it still does. --Sam Graham
The seminal rock benefit concert that took place at Madison Square Garden in August 1971, featured a superb gathering of musical greats, among them show organizer George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, and Ravi Shankar. Songs include "Something," "It Don't Come Easy," "Just Like a Woman," "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall," "Bangladesh." 99 min. Standard; Soundtracks: English DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1; deleted scenes; documentary; interviews; bonus performances; photo gallery; featurettes. Two-disc set.

Nighthawks at the Diner

As tour guide on a trip through the midnight-to-dawn streets of Los Angeles that the beautiful people never see through the smoked-glass windows of their limos, Waits details the lives of hipsters, down-and-outers, and lost causes in latter-day beat poetry and small-jazz-combo arrangements. This live album from 1975 almost has the quality of standup comedy, but the routines are richer and more carefully drawn. Check out the vivid detail, low humor, and hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold emotionalism Waits brings to songs such as "Nighthawk Postcards," "Putnam County," and a memorable reading of trucker poet Red Sovine's "Big Joe and Phantom 309." --Daniel Durchholz

The Easter Bunny Is Coming to Town
List Price: $14.97
Sale Price: $1.99
|
|
|
Features include: •MPAA Rating: NR•Format: DVD•Runtime: 50 minutes
Brought to you by the same crew that wrote and directed the classic Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, this Easter staple will look and feel familiar to any eyes that watched the 1970s around holiday time. Writer Romeo Muller's done a wonderful job capturing simple lo-fi dialogue and action around the lovable early-spring bunny, weaving enough drama into the script to make the show comprehensible for kids and enjoyable for (most) adults. The production team makes their animation-verité visuals jerky enough that it feels still like their Santa juggernaut (created seven years earlier than this 1977 production). And narrator Fred Astaire returns to give the shell of the story its pleasant feel, not at all too threatening but neither too mushy or idiotic. Of course the production dynamics and sound are subpar in comparison with current techniques, but this isn't a film to watch with an eye for how with-the-times it could or should be. --Andrew Bartlett

The Mighty Boosh Special Edition DVD (Seasons 1-3)
List Price: $79.98
Sale Price: $55.93
|
|
|
Come along for an extended journey through time and space with the Mighty Boosh Special Edition DVD, a seven-disc compilation of the surreal UK comedy series' first three seasons, plus a bonus disc of live material and behind-the-scenes footage that's sure to please the show's growing legion of fans. Those who own the double-disc standalone editions of Boosh's first three seasons will find all of that material repeated here in six of the special edition's discs, including all episodes and supplemental features, so for those wishing to get up to speed in a hurry on the adventures of zookeepers Howard Moon and Vince Noir (creators Julian Barrett and Noel Fielding), or complete their collection in one fell swoop, here's the set to do it. It's the seventh disc that makes the special edition a must-have for first-timers and Boosh faithful alike; chief among its many extras is The Mighty Boosh: A Journey Through Time and Space, a lighthearted but comprehensive hour-long documentary about Barrett and Fielding's trajectory from humble standups to certifiable pop culture icons, with plenty of commentary by fellow UK comics like series producer Steve Coogan. Barrett and Fielding are also front and center for an interview at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and as hosts of a Mighty Boosh night on BBC Three from 2008, complete with their live linking segments. There's also a glimpse at a proto-Boosh in sketches from a 1997 unreleased TV pilot called (Un)Natural Acts, which also finds the pair in a zoo setting, albeit without the outlandish props. Deleted scenes, outtakes, and a look at the creation of the berserk Sammy the Crab puppet also await the faithful; the special features have been arranged in an appropriately psychedelic manner on the disc (none are labeled, and many simply lead to visual non sequiturs), with some only available as Easter eggs, so patience is most definitely required. --Paul Gaita
Includes the two-disc sets of seasons 1-3 plus a bonus disc full of extra features. **21 episodes on 7 discs. 9 1/3 hrs.**

Osmosis Jones

OSMOSIS JONES IS A MAVERICK WHITE BLOOD CELL COP, PAIRED WITH A NO-NONSENSE PARTNER, A COLD TABLET. THE TWO MUST PROTECT THEIRHUMAN HOST, FRANK, WHEN FRANK CATCHES A COLD.
After the stiff attempts at realism in many recent features, it's a treat to see broad cartoon-style animation on the big screen in Osmosis Jones, a spoof of cop movies set inside the human body. The title character (voice by Chris Rock) is a street-smart white blood cell, working for Frank's immune system. He and Drix (David Hyde Pierce), an over-the-counter cold capsule, are reluctant partners fighting what appears to be a minor infection. Osmosis discovers Frank has really contracted a fatal virus, Thrax (Laurence Fishburne): he battles a corrupt body politic led by a venal mayor (William Shatner) to save Frank's life and win the affection of the mayor's aide, Leah (Brandy Norwood). Rock's motor-mouth delivery can get annoying, but it contrasts nicely with straight arrow Drix (imagine a fussy Buzz Lightyear). Excellent drawing and a powerful vocal performance make Thrax a genuinely frightening villain. Osmosis Jones is about two-thirds animation and one-third live action, which is why two-thirds of the film is entertaining and funny, and one-third is not. The life Osmosis and Drix save belongs to Frank, a slob played in live-action sequences by Bill Murray, who's undercut rather than supported by Chris Elliott and Molly Shannon. Shamelessly over-the-top performances make the human characters seem flatter than the two-dimensional cartoons. The live action was shot by the Farrelly brothers and features lots of gross-out gags about zits, flatulence, vomit, snot, etc. The audience endures these leaden segments, waiting to get back to the animation--and the real comedy. Suitable for ages 9 and up: profanity, violence, bodily function jokes. --Charles Solomon

Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, Vol. 3
List Price: $64.92
Sale Price: $25.55
|
|
|
Another 60 fondly remembered Looney Tunes faves are included in this four-disc set that features cartoons starring Bugs Bunny ("Hare Force," "Bowery Bugs," "Acrobatty Bunny," "Duck! Rabbit, Duck!," and more); and Porky Pig ("Porky's Party," "Pigs Is Pigs," "An Egg Scramble," "Claws for Alarm," and more); a selection of hilarious Hollywood send-ups ("Daffy Duck in Hollywood," "Thugs with Dirty Mugs," "Wideo Wabbit," "The Honey-Mousers," and more); and an all-star extravaganza ("Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur," "A Gruesome Twosome" with Tweety Bird, "Odor-able Kitty" with Pepe Le Pew, "Walky Talky Hawky" with Foghorn Leghorn, and more). 7 1/3 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono, Spanish Dolby Digital mono; audio commentary on selected shorts; bonus shorts; featurettes; storyboards.
Like the previous entries in the Looney Tunes Golden Collection series, volume 3 confirms how brilliant the Warner Bros. artists were and how durable their creations have proven. The set includes classics that every cartoon buff will recognize: "Duck! Rabbit! Duck!," "Robin Hood Daffy," "Birds Anonymous." Other selections are less familiar but significant in the development of the studio: "Sinkin' in the Bathtub," the first Looney Tune; "I Haven't Got a Hat," the earliest Warners cartoon viewers can watch for fun, rather than as an historic curiosity; "Porky's Romance," in which director Frank Tashlin introduced rapid cutting to cartoons. Some of the caricature films have aged less gracefully. Younger audiences will recognize the drawn versions of W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, Katharine Hepburn, and Charlie Chaplin. But will anyone under the age of 60 remember Edna Mae Oliver, George Arliss, or Ned Sparks? The producers have once again loaded the discs with supplemental material, including "Point Food Rationing," a unseen short explaining wartime ration books; a BBC documentary on Chuck Jones; and interstitial animated sequences for The Bugs Bunny Show. "Philbert" ranks as the oddest of the extras: an unsold (and leaden) pilot from 1963, featuring live actors and an animated title character. Whoopi Goldberg introduces the set, explaining that some of the ethnic gags would no longer be considered appropriate. But she correctly adds that to remove them would falsify both the history of animation and American popular culture. It all adds up to a set every cartoon fan will want. (Unrated, suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Whether you choose Raspberry Swirl or Blueberry Lemon, you are sure to enjoy.
RASPBERRY SWIRL COFFEE CAKE

1/2 cup Splenda granular
1/4 cup sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 egg
1 cup sugar-free raspberry yogurt
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped almonds, toasted
1/2 cup seedless, sugar-free raspberry preserves, divided
2 tbsp sliced almonds, toasted
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In another mixing bowl, whicsk the egg, yogurt, butter and vanilla until blended; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Stir in the chopped almonds. Pour batter into a greased 9-inch springform pan. Drop 1/3 cup of preserves over the batter by tablespoonfuls; cut through with a knife to swirl. Sprinkle with the sliced almonds. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes; remove sides of pan. In a small pan or microwave, heat the remaining preserves and drizzle on serving plates with the cake.

BLUEBERRY LEMON COFFEE CAKE
Note: This recipe is adapted from one I saw in an old Taste of Home's Quick Cooking magazine.
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/3 cup minus 1 tbsp Splenda
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp grated lemon peel
2/3 cup milk
2 1/4 cups biscuit/baking mix
1 cup fresh blueberries
3/4 cup sugar-free powdered sugar*
4 tsp lemon juice
In a mixing bowl, combine egg, Splenda, sugar, lemon peel and milk, mixing well. Stir in the baking mix just until moistened. Carefully fold in the blueberries. Pour into a greased 9-inch round baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes, then remove from pan.
To make the frosting drizzle, combine the powdered sugar and lemon juice. Mix until smooth. Drizzle over warm cake.

Anyone know the recipe for making the pickled eggs from Joe Josts in Long Beach, CA?
I don't want a generic recipe, or what your mom or grandmother used to make, or to go to the store. Because the store ones are NOT the ones that Joe Josts makes, not even close. Theirs are unique and was hoping someone has replicated or knows the recipe.
They occasionally publish this in the Long Beach Press-Telegram
8 hard-boiled eggs, peeled
1 (12 ounce) jar yellow chili peppers
2 tablespoons pickling spice
1 cup white wine vinegar
1 1/2 scant cups water
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon tumeric
2 teaspoons salt
Mix all ingredients except eggs together in a glass jar with tight-fitting lid. Put peeled eggs in liquid. Don't refrigerate. Keep eggs in sealed jar at least two days before using. May refrigerate after two days. The marinade may be used several times; just add more egg
