Mel Brooks's 1987 parody of the Star Wars trilogy is a jumble of jokes rather than a comic feature, and, predictably, some of those jokes work better than others. The cast, including Brooks in two roles, more or less mimics the principal characters from George Lucas's famous story line, and the director certainly gets a boost from new allies (SCTV graduates Rick Moranis and John Candy) as well as old ones (Dick Van Patten, Dom DeLuise). Watch this and wait for the sporadic inspiration--but don't be surprised if you find yourself yearning for those years when Brooks was a more complete filmmaker (Young Frankenstein). --Tom Keogh
Such a long time ago, in a galaxy so far away, you don't want to think about it...Mel Brooks lines the "space opera" genre up in his sights and fires away! See Winnebagoes in space, the villainy of Pizza the Hut, and Brooks as Yogurt, master of the Schwartz. Rick Moranis, John Candy, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman star. 96 min. Standard and Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital stereo Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: Spanish, French; audio commentary by Brooks; featurette; theatrical trailer.

The Best of Riverdance

The DVD debut of Michael Flatley's performance in Riverdance (or at least part of it) is one of the highlights of The Best of Riverdance, a generous survey of the Irish hard-shoe sensation that has riveted live audiences and PBS viewers for a decade. Beginning with the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest performance that led to the full-length stage show, the program compiles a number of highlights from the show's history, taken mostly from three sources. There's the original 1995 televised show starring the flamboyant, record-setting tapper Flatley and his partner, Jean Butler. There's the 1997 New York City concert, with Colin Dunne opposite Butler. And finally there's the 2003 performance from Geneva headlined by Brendán de Gallaí and Joanne Doyle. Because elements of the show and numerous performers have changed over the years, each performance has its own character, and The Best of Riverdance even takes the unusual step of blending segments of various shows into a single number. For example, "Riverdance" switches back and forth among the three shows and the three sets of leads. "Lift the Wings" begins with two verses of the solo voice of Áine Uí Cheallaigh, then segues into segments from the ensemble-sung version from New York and Geneva. Because the solo rendition was one of the biggest losses of later generations of the show, it's nice to have at least part of it on DVD. Likewise, because Flatley's complete Riverdance performance is not yet available on DVD, fans will be glad to have at least a few numbers here. Other later-generation numbers included are "American Wake" and "Trading Taps," and the DVD menu screens very clear note which performer or combination of performers is performing. Brand new in this nearly two-hour program are occasional introductions by Jean Butler, which help explain some of the ambiguous stage action. Bonus features are a new one-hour documentary about the history of the show, 16 minutes of high-speed backstage footage, and an eight-minute performance from the 2003 Special Olympics. Some viewers may find the introductions or the performance switches jarring to the flow, and The Best of Riverdance is surely not a substitute for the complete performances of the show, but it is a nice compilation, and offers some footage that you can't see anywhere else. --David Horiuchi
Compilation of 18 performances starting with the Point Theatre in Dublin with Michael Flatley and Jean Butler, to Radio City Music Hall and ending in Geneva Switzerland. Cover disc and insert are in mint condition. Region 1 (USA & Canada)

William Shatner Beams Into Maui for Concert Series at The Hard Rock
LAHAINA, HI--(Marketwire - December 22, 2009) - Around the world he is Denny Crane.
Or TJ Hooker.
Or maybe it's Captain Kirk.
Whoever he is to you, William Shatner reaffirmed that he is one classy guy when he joined crooner Brian Evans at The Hard Rock Café on Maui, Hawaii for the first "Maui Celebrity Series," being produced by Evans, Arman Zajic, and Andrew Biltz. Evans opens for various stars ranging from Jay Leno to Joan Rivers, and convinced many of his friends to appear at the monthly series.
"It wasn't hard to convince them," says Evans. "It's Maui, the most beautiful place on the planet," says Evans. "The stars and The Hard Rock are trying to bring attention to the island again since tourism has been down due to the economy, and these stars recognize that without Hawaii, many of them wouldn't have the careers they have today."
The press it has generated has been beyond what was anticipated.
"Brian is working on his own major label debut, and decided to put this together with the help of some friends," says co-producer Arman Zajic.
Evans wanted Shatner first, according to Zajic. "The concept is simple... about 300 people who live or visit Maui can see a major star perform with an upcoming one, Brian Evans, every month," says Zajic. "Brian has always admired William Shatner. They have performed together in the past, and Brian wanted him again for Maui and Bill (William) said yes."
"For me, William Shatner has always been a hero of mine. People were calling the venue asking what he was going to be doing at the show, and I just explained that it's not about what he was going to do, but about what he's already done," says Evans. "He's a worldwide icon, and this was a moment for people to see the show, and meet Bill Shatner, where he autographed books and talked to the crowd one on one," Evans says.
Evans originates from Haverhill, Massachusetts, and is the creator of a new comic book series entitled "Horrorscope," being created for Zenescope Entertainment, the force behind the "Final Destination" and "Seven" comics, also major motion pictures. Evans is also recording his major label debut, being produced by Chris Walden, whose latest work was on Barbra Streisand's latest CD. Evans wrote most of the CD, though it will feature a duet with Kelly Osbourne.
"If it weren't for Royal Lahaina Resort, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, or Hawaiian Airlines, we'd of had a tough time doing this," says Evans. "They really helped make this a reality, and The Hard Rock has been extremely supportive even when the numbers didn't make sense because they understand the long term goal," Evans says. "It has been a long time since a star of the caliber of Roseanne has played a 300 seat venue."
The next show for The Maui Celebrity Series will be on January 15th, 2010 when Brian Evans and Roseanne Barr appear in concert. Barr will perform an entire show. For more information on the series visit www.themauicelebrityseries.com. Evans' website is available at www.brianevans.com. Tickets for the Roseanne Barr performance are available at www.groovetickets.com.
Upcoming stars that intend to perform at The Maui Celebrity Series at The Hard Rock Café include Joan Rivers, Jake Shimabukuro, Hal Sparks from the hit Showtime series "Queer As Folk," and others.
"We intend to go after everyone from Elton John to Paul McCartney," says Zajic. "Hawaii has been an important place for them all."
Evans performs a solo concert at Harrah's Laughlin on Valentine's Day.

Why on Earth did Trump fire Annie Duke and hire Joan Rivers?
She played the game so much better, fought through harder odds, and raised more money, all while being a lesser known celebrity.
And she was fired on the last night?
Donald wanted to suck up to the old lady. Annie dominated even more than Piers did last season and Joan was weak compared to last year's competition...
