What made the original Toy Story so great, besides its significant achievement as the first-ever feature-length computer animated film, was its ability to instantly transport viewers into a magical world where it seemed completely plausible that toys were living, thinking beings who sprang to life the minute they were alone and wanted nothing more than to be loved and played with by their children. Toy Story 3 absolutely succeeds in the very same thing--adults and children alike, whether they've seen the original film or not, find themselves immediately immersed in a world in which Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris), Ham (John Ratzenberger), Rex (Wallace Shawn), the aliens, and the rest of Andy's toys remain completely devoted to Andy (John Morris) even as he's getting ready to pack up and leave for college. Woody scoffs at the other toys' worries that they'll end up in the garbage, assuring them that they've earned a spot of honor in the attic, but when the toys are mistakenly donated to Sunnyside Daycare, Woody is the only toy whose devotion to Andy outweighs the promise of getting played with each and every day. Woody sets off toward home alone while the other toys settle in for some daycare fun, but things don't turn out quite as expected at the daycare thanks to the scheming, strawberry-scented old-timer bear Lots-o'-Huggin' (Ned Beatty). Eventually, Woody rejoins his friends and they all attempt a daring escape from the daycare, which could destroy them all. The pacing of the film is impeccable at this point, although the sense of peril may prove almost too intense for a few young viewers. Pixar's 3-D computer animation is top-notch as always and the voice talent in this film is tremendous, but in the end, it's Pixar's uncanny ability to combine drama, action, and humor in a way that irresistibly draws viewers into the world of the film that makes Toy Story 3 such great family entertainment. John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages. Like the few great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular '60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story. Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes, and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever. Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U.S. two other outstanding 1999 animated features (The Iron Giant, Princess Mononoke) could not: it became a huge box-office hit. --Doug Thomas

The toys are back in town for a third go 'round in Pixar's popular animated franchise, as Woody accompanies Andy to college while Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of Andy's playthings are accidentally sent to a day-care center. Based on a true story from Japan, Hachi: A Dog's Tale is a moving film about loyalty and the rare, invincible bonds that occasionally form almost instantaneously in the most unlikely places. College professor Parker Wilson (Richard Gere) finds a young Akita puppy that's been abandoned at the local train station, and he's instantly captivated by the dog. Assuming the dog's owner will return to the train station to claim him in the morning, Parker takes the puppy home overnight. But when no one comes to get the dog, Parker convinces his wife, Cate (Joan Allen), to welcome him as part of the family. He dubs the puppy Hachiko--Hachi, for short--because of the Japanese symbol for good luck that's hanging from his collar. Hachi is a somewhat peculiar dog that refuses to learn to fetch or master other people-pleasing tricks, but he is a faithful companion and friend to Parker, alerting him of potential dangers and accompanying him to the train station each morning and meeting him there after his return trip each evening. An unforeseen event will continually test Hachi's devotion. This film is neither overwrought nor sappy; it is heartfelt and immensely powerful despite its tendency to drag in a few places. Prepare to be moved to tears by this beautiful, seemingly simple film--it's about so much more than just the relationship between a man and his dog. --Tami Horiuchi

The #1 Opera Album The #1 Opera Album

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin

Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back (1965 Tour Deluxe Edition) Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back (1965 Tour Deluxe Edition)
List Price: $29.95
Sale Price: $16.10

Both a classic documentary and a vital pop-cultural artifact, D.A. Pennebaker's portrait of Bob Dylan captures the seminal singer-songwriter on the cusp of his transformation from folk prophet to rock trendsetter. Shot during Dylan's 1965 British concert tour, Don't Look Back employs an edgy vérité style that was, and is, a snug fit with the artist's own consciously rough-hewn persona. Its handheld black-and-white images and often-gritty London backdrops suggest cinematic extensions of the archetypal monochrome portraits that graced Dylan's career-making early-'60s album jackets. Pennebaker's access to the legendarily private troubadour enables us to witness Dylan's shifting moods as he performs, relaxes with his entourage (including then lover Joan Baez, road manager Bob Neuwirth, and poker-faced manager Albert Grossman), and jousts with other musicians (notably Animals alumnus Alan Price and Scottish folksinger Donovan), fans, and press. It's a measurement of the filmmaker's acuity that the conversations are often as gripping as Dylan's solo performances. Grossman's machinations with British promoters, Baez's hip serenity, a grizzled British journalist's surrender to the fact of Dylan's artistry, and the artist's own taunting dismissal of a clueless sycophant are all absorbing. With the exception of the studio recording of "Subterranean Homesick Blues," the live performances (including five newly restored, complete audio tracks excised from the original film but included on the DVD version) are constrained by crude audio gear. Their urgency, however, is timeless, as is Pennebaker's film, a legitimate cornerstone for any serious rock video collection. --Sam Sutherland

Bob Dylan's 1965 tour of England is the background for this seminal "rockumentary" by D.A. Pennebaker ("Monterey Pop") that looks at Dylan's music, his off-stage moments with other tour members (including Joan Baez, Donovan, and Allen Ginsberg), and the philosophies that brought about the youth movements of the late '60s. 152 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English; audio commentary by Pennebaker and road manager Bob Neuwirth; bonus footage; documentary; book; theatrical trailer; more. The Inferno The Inferno
List Price: $17.00
Sale Price: $6.00

Translation is always an imperfect art, demanding from its practitioners a level of dual fidelity that even a seasoned bigamist would envy. And no work of art has prompted more in the way of earnest imperfection than Dante's Divine Comedy. Transforming those intricate, rhyme-rich tercets into English has been the despair of many a distinguished translator, from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to W.S. Merwin (whose estimable rendition of Purgatorio found the poet rattling over more than one linguistic speed bump). Now comes a fresh rendition of the Inferno from a husband-and-wife team. Robert Hollander, who has taught Dante for nearly four decades at Princeton, supplies the scholarly muscle, while his wife, poet Jean Hollander, attends to the verbal music. How does their collaboration stack up? In his introduction, Robert Hollander is quick to acknowledge his debt to John D. Sinclair's prose trot of 1939, and to the version that Charles Singleton derived largely from his predecessor's in 1970. Yet the Hollanders have done us all a favor by throwing Sinclair's faux medievalisms overboard. And their predilection for direct, monosyllabic English sometimes brings them much closer to Dante's asperity and rhythmic urgency. One example will suffice. In the last line of Canto V, after listening to Francesca's adulterous aria, the poet faints: "E caddi come corpo morto cade." Sinclair's rendering---"I swooned as if in death and dropped like a dead body"--has a kind of conditional mushiness to it. Compare the punchier rendition from the Hollanders: "And down I fell as a dead body falls." It sounds like an actual line of English verse, which is the least we can do for the supreme poet of our beleaguered civilization. Robert Hollander has also supplied an extensive and very welcome commentary. There are times, perhaps, when he might have broken ranks with his academic ancestors: why not deviate from Giorgio Petrocchi's 1967 edition of the Italian text when he thinks that the great scholar was barking up the wrong tree? In any case, the Hollanders' Inferno is a fine addition to the burgeoning bookshelf of Dante in English. It won't displace the relatively recent verse translations by Robert Pinsky or Allen Mandelbaum, and even John Ciardi's version, which sometimes substitutes breeziness for accuracy, can probably hold its own here. But when it comes to high fidelity and exegetical generosity, this Inferno burns brightly indeed. --James Marcus

The epic grandeur of Dante’s masterpiece has inspired readers for 700 years, and has entered the human imagination. But the further we move from the late medieval world of Dante, the more a rich understanding and enjoyment of the poem depends on knowledgeable guidance. Robert Hollander, a renowned scholar and master teacher of Dante, and Jean Hollander, an accomplished poet, have written a beautifully accurate and clear verse translation of the first volume of Dante’s epic poem, the Divine Comedy. Featuring the original Italian text opposite the translation, this edition also offers an extensive and accessible introduction and generous commentaries that draw on centuries of scholarship as well as Robert Hollander’s own decades of teaching and research. The Hollander translation is the new standard in English of this essential work of world literature.

Bob Dylan - No Direction Home Review

Martin Scorsese's Bob Dylan opus, screened on BBC 2 in the UK, in late September 2005, was an in-depth look at Dylan's formative years, up to the time of the "Judas" insults and his motorcycle crash in 1966. Ultimately, it's a documentary that inspires, though the film ended abruptly, when it would have been better to at least have seen some glimpses of Dylan post-1966.

Maybe's there's too much non-Dylan material in this near three-and-a-half hour film, but, overall, it's an enthralling look at Dylan's early career, with comments from the man himself - from now and the 1960s. Much of the archive footage is drawn from two sources - D.A. Pennebaker's film on Dylan's 1965 tour of England, 'Don't Look Back', and Murray Lerner's 'Festival' - covering the 1963 Newport Folk Festival.

The film goes into Dylan's early influences, particularly Woody Guthrie, and the atmosphere of early-mid '60s America, with the civil rights struggle, Vietnam, and President Kennedy's assassination. All grist to the Dylan mill.

Dylan was quite heavily involved in the civil rights scene, playing in Mississippi, with friend and major influence Pete Seeger, and also playing on the same podium, and on the same day, as where Martin Luther King delivered his legendary "I have a dream" speech - a speech which still leaves Dylan awed, as he reflected: "I was up close when King was giving that speech, and to this day it still affects me in a profound way."

Dylan, in his early days, comes across as a taciturn interviewee amidst a haze of cigarette smoke, obviously happy to let his songs do the talking. Dylan never wanted to be a malleable star. It was success on his terms. Dylan: "I've never been that kind of performer that wants to be one of them. You know, like one of the crowd."

'No Direction Home' may not have much really revealing material for Dylan devotees, but it's an important documentary on one of the most influential figures of 20th Century music. Al Kooper tells how he blagged his way on to Dylan's memorable 'Like A Rolling Stone' track, as the organist, though he was originally enlisted as a guitarist. He heard blues guitar god Mike Bloomfield, realised he couldn't compete, so looked for an opportunity to get on the record playing something else. Kooper sneaked in on the organ, and was so careful not to make a mistake that he was an eighth of a note behind the rest of the players - just to make sure he got it right.

Other contributions of note come from Joan Baez, which is profanity-laden, and she still seems hurt by how her relationship with Dylan ended. Dylan had seen Joan on TV, before he himself was famous, and thought maybe she needed a male voice. Dylan had goals and managed to achieve them. Being unafraid to voice anti-establishment opinions, but not being obnoxious to people who could help him on the road to success.

1963 saw Dylan triumph at the Newport Folk Festival, with his leading a rendition of 'Blowin' In The Wind', with Peter, Paul, and Mary, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and The Freedom Singers. His performance there in 1965 was less than a triumphant return. Dylan had an electrified backing band, for the first time, and a large part of the crowd turned on him. Seeger had, it was rumoured, been so distressed to see his protégé go electric that he was going to cut the cables. It was also said, however, that Seeger was distressed because his father was hard of hearing, and the somewhat loud and distorted sound was disorientating him. Dylan came back onstage, after his electric set, via desperate bidding, to play one song on his acoustic. The 1966 tour of England was also a fraught one, with Dylan being backed by what would later be The Band. There were "Judas" calls, and boos everywhere he went, but the criticism seems quite mild by today's standards, though there was a little rumour that someone took a shot at Dylan while he was onstage in England. Also, in 'No Direction Home', there's some great offstage footage of Bob and Johnny Cash duetting at a piano on this tour.

Among the other contributors in the film were Liam Clancy, who pertinently said, "He articulated what we couldn't". Also contributing were Peter Yarrow, a sadly frail-looking Allen Ginsberg, Maria Muldaur, old flame Suze Rotolo, and Pete Seeger - still looking on Bob with paternal and fraternal affection.
