First, figure out what you're really comfortable with in terms of budget for the ring. The two months' salary is a myth. You don't need to go into debt to get a diamond engagement ring. Remember, the symbol of the ring is a commitment to your future together. There's no rule that says a one carat diamond solitaire guarantees a lifetime of bliss. If you feel $1000 is the most you can spend on the ring, then stick with that price point. Check out an engagement ring website such as Robbins Brothers to get a feel for the style options, then make an appointment to visit the store. 

As you're searching for the ring, think about how you want to propose. Jot down places you've visited together, favorite movies, restaurants. Is there a dream destination you've both talked about visiting, such Paris, Hong Kong or Hawaii? Once you have a list of ideas, take the next step and research affordable ways to make something out of your budget become a reality.

Examples of "budget" proposal ideas:

• Venice, Italy would set you back at least $4,000. Instead, book a one hour gondola ride at sunset in Naples, Long Beach (California) for less than $100. Let the reservation clerk know you're proposing and they may even throw in a complimentary glass of champagne.
• A trip to Hawaii can be booked through Expedia or Pleasant Holidays for as low as $399 per person. This economy trip is still a good chunk of change for most folks these days. What you could do is bring Hawaii to your own patio. Pick up luau supplies at any party supply store, including tiki torches, plastic leis, and a palm tree. Decorate the table with fresh orchids and ask her to marry you with a pineapple mimosa (pineapple juice & champagne) and one of those cute umbrella toothpicks holding the engagement ring.
• A favorite gourmet restaurant, with a bottle of champagne and dessert, could cost upwards of $250 for dinner for two. Opt for a take-out meal instead, with the best of everything from an upscale grocer like Whole Foods or Bristol Farms, and set up a picnic under the stars. Ultra-sweet, very personal, and after she says "yes" to your proposal you won't have the waiter giving you the evil eye as he tries to turn the table.

Amazon Investment Book Reviews: Have You Been Brainwashed?

Most popular investment books are published for the already rich and famous, by an industry that has become just too good at the business of selling books. Rarely will a publisher take a chance with the work of an unknown author. Certainly, it's a no brainer to sell a Jim Cramer, Peter Lynch, Robert Kiyosaki, or Maria Bartiromo effort while a uniquely new approach to solving the puzzles of Wall Street, presented by an unknown writer or commentator, requires some major financial risk.

Big publishers want to sell already big names; discovering new ones is not in their wheelhouse. Are they responsible for the problems in the financial markets? Of course not, but they do have a perverse, if indirect, impact. By constantly publishing the same Wall Street friendly message, they contribute to the brainwashing.

Without a wider distribution of new ideas based on old wisdom, Wall Street as usual remains Wall Street as usual and the average investor remains uninformed and ill advised about the dangers of the financial markets. The biggest investment mistake generators are cleverly ignored by most of the books I've read about investing--- even compounded.

The new generation focus on calendar year instead of market cycle performance; the worship of portfolio market value alone, for all securities, even those purchased solely for income production; the use of gimmicks and products instead of securities for portfolio development; the acceptance of speculations as acceptable, "alternative" investments.

Appreciating the differences between investing and speculating, and learning what to expect from your securities in cyclical markets are things that investors must learn about.
