A portrayal of the timeless struggle between innocent pleasure and rigid morality. City-boy Ren McCormick finds himself in an uptight Midwestern town where dancing has been banned.Genre: Feature Film-DramaRating: PGRelease Date: 2-MAY-2006Media Type: DVD
Footloose jumps with spirit, dazzling dance numbers and an electrifying musical score. It portrays the timeless struggle between innocent pleasure and rigid morality, when city-boy Ren McCormick (Kevin Bacon) finds himself in an uptight Midwestern town where dancing has been banned. Ren revolts with best friend Willard (Chris Penn) and the minister's daughter (Lori Singer). A treasury of Top 10 songs-Kenny Loggins "Footloose," Shalamar "Dancing In The Sheets," Deniece Williams "Let's Hear It For The Boy," Bonnie Tyler "Holding Out for A Hero," and the Footloose love theme, "Almost Paradise."
Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) pulled a winning movie out of this almost self-consciously archetypal tale of teenage rock rebellion. Kevin Bacon stars as a hip city kid who ends up in a Bible-belt town after his parents divorce. An ill fit for a conservative community where rock is frowned upon and dancing is forbidden, Bacon's character rallies the kids and takes on the establishment. Between a good cast really embracing the drama of Dean Pitchford's screenplay, and Ross's imaginative, highly charged way of shooting the dance numbers, you can get lost in this all-ages confection, and you won't even mind Kenny Loggins's bubbly pop. Bonuses include one of John Lithgow's best performances (a bit reminiscent of Jimmy Stewart), and Christopher Penn (who sure doesn't look the same anymore) as a good-natured hick who learns to boogie. --Tom Keogh

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in May 1959 and was a solid success, if not a huge blockbuster. It did well enough, in any case, to warrant a 1997 revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was far from revolutionary, but it provided a really fun vehicle for a cast of top stage personalities, including black actress Jane White, who played Queen Aggravain (a part originally written for comedienne Nancy Walker) in whiteface. But of course, Once Upon a Mattress's heart and soul was Carol Burnett, who, in her Broadway debut created the part of Princess Winnifred and delivered two of Mary Rodgers's best songs, the hilarious "Shy" and the spunky "Happily Ever After," which sounds a bit like Jule Styne at his most rhythmic. Burnett's timing and performance remain as sharp as they were 40 years ago. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

She wasn't a beauty queen, but country-music star Patsy Cline's voice was a thing of wonder: full-bodied, aching and dreamy at the same time. She came by the torchy emotions in her songs honestly, as shown in this biopic directed by Karel Reisz, rising from poor surroundings, literally forcing her talent on the Nashville establishment, all the while trying to survive an abusive marriage to a drinker. Though the script by Robert Getchell is standard Hollywood biography, the movie is more than watchable, thanks to a bone-deep performance by the always astonishing Jessica Lange and the counterpoint by Ed Harris as her loving but unreliable husband. The soundtrack features a basketful of Cline's hits, which Lange convincingly lip-synchs. --Marshall Fine

This big, fat theatrical bomb has a lot going for it. There's the three leads, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, playing three resurrected witches who wreak havoc on Salem, Massachusetts, 300 hundred years after they were hung. There's music, special effects, and magic. There's a surprisingly horror-filled plot. Whoops, hold up on that last one. It's probably the extremes that this film goes to (displaying a Disney label), such as the witches sucking the life out of a little girl in the first five minutes, that put the brakes on any success for Hocus Pocus. Older children, however, in the 8 and up range should get a kick out of all the weird goings-on. It's a good measure of Halloween thrills and chills. --Keith Simanton

This surprisingly absorbing drama, based on Conrad Richter's novel, tells the tale of the re-assimilation of Johnny Butler, kidnapped as a child by Native Americans (in this 1958 film, of course, called Indians), into the "white man's world." Reluctant and unfamiliar with his biological parents (Jessica Tandy and Frank Ferguson), he's befriended by frontiersman Del Hardy (Fess Parker, basically looking handsome and playing his popular image), also raised by the Indians and now an Army man. Johnny also meets and fancies Shenandoe--his aunt and nasty uncle's indentured servant girl, (a positively luminescent Carol Lynley, 16, in her first role), whose family was massacred by another tribe. While this is an action film set in 1764, made in the still politically insensitive 1950s, it manages not to paint stereotypes. But Light in the Forest is, more than anything, a love story. Shenandoe, terrified of Johnny initially, grows to love him. Johnny, burdened by not feeling he belongs in either world, finds solace in Shenandoe's sweet friendship. (Ages 8 and older) --N.F. Mendoza
The year is 1764, when a peace treaty between the Delaware Indians and the British requires that all white captives be returned to their people. Johnny Butler (James MacArthur), kidnapped by the tribe when he was a child and renamed True Son, is forced against his will to return to his white family in Pennsylvania. His escort, frontiersman Del Hardy (Fess Parker) and Shenandoe, a beautiful servant girl (Carol Lynley, in her feature film debut), try to help the boy adjust to his new way of life. But the white man's injustice and cruelty drive him back to the Delawares, where even greater dangers await him!

Jesse Stone: Thin Ice

Hitting the bottle again, lovesick lawman Jesse Stone (Tom Selleck) is thrown into further turmoil when someone tries to kill his police captain pal in Boston. Faced with losing his job over the incident, he must travel there to participate in an Internal Affairs investigation while the mother of a missing child arrives in Paradise hoping to find some answers. With Stephen McHattie, Kathy Baker, Leslie Hope. 88 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English.
Tom Selleck returns to the role of Jesse Stone, the troubled but uncompromising police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts in Jesse Stone: Thin Ice. The fifth made-for-television movie in the Stone series, and the first not directly adapted from a specific novel by Robert B. Parker, the engrossing Thin Ice is an apt title for a story that finds a pair of investigations and Stone's relationship with Paradise's town council looking perilous. Wounded during a murderous attempt on Captain Healy (Stephen McHattie) of the Massachusetts State Police, Stone sets out to find the would-be killer against the wishes of Internal Affairs, the Paradise council, and Healy himself. Meanwhile, a woman (Camryn Manheim) whose newborn baby was stolen from her and presumed dead years ago appeals for help from a skeptical Stone. The chief's usual problems with alcohol and the breakup of his marriage continue to haunt him, too. But none of that lessens Stone's determination to follow his own moral code as he takes on his superiors' shady ethics, a would-be killer, and a possible kidnapper. Selleck, the show's co-writer and executive producer, is much older than Parker's original character. But he certainly captures the soul and rhythms of the quintessential Parker hero, and brings a fitting, gruff decency to the role. Kathy Baker is very good as one of the two officers under Stone's command (Kohl Sudduth is quirky, good fun as the other cop). William Devane is a grizzled cipher as Stone's chain-smoking shrink, and Leslie Hope provides a film noir edge as Stone's cynical lover, a cop with the rather improbable name of Sidney Greenstreet. --Tom Keogh Stills from Jesse Stone: Thin Ice (click for larger image)

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
