Entourage: The Complete Seventh Season
List Price: $39.98

Season seven of Entourage is the darkest chapter in the show's history to date, and while even long-running series may have one or two Very Special Episodes, an entire season filled with drugs, rejection, and breakups is too heavy for a comedy. After hemming and hawing over doing a stunt himself, Vince (Adrian Grenier) gets into a slight accident that leaves him shaken but craving adrenaline, kicking off a self-destructive spiral that lasts all season. He begins a drug-and-alcohol-fueled relationship with porn star Sasha Grey (as herself), which further diminishes his reputation (especially when he brings her to a business meeting with Stan Lee and he tries to recall where he's seen her before). It doesn't help that Vince is the new face of an imported tequila that Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) is attempting to market. Meanwhile, Ari (Jeremy Piven) reveals a particularly nasty side when he overreacts to the departure of a junior agent he mistreated and believes has aligned with his rival (Carla Gugino). This puts him on even shakier ground with the long-suffering Mrs. Ari (Perrey Reeves), who gives him an ultimatum on their marriage. And while Eric (Kevin Connolly) is newly engaged to Sloane (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and a rising agent in his own right, he faces stiff competition from his brasher, more charismatic associate (Scott Caan). Finally, Johnny (Kevin Dillon) develops a buddy sitcom with John Stamos--but must play Ping-Pong against him to woo him into the taking the part. When Bob Saget steals it from him, Johnny is offered what could be the greatest career move of his life, but he's too offended to consider it: a starring voice-over role (as a gorilla) in his own animated series called "Johnny's Bananas." This story line was the only spark in Entourage's downer of a season, which is commendable for going a different direction but never found the right balance of the elements that made it such a hit series. Even when Grenier and Piven are going through their struggles, they come off more annoying than sympathetic. As the series wraps up next season, here's hoping it finds its spark before the party ends. --Ellen A. Kim

Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World

As happens with many creative people, director Robert Rodriguez became very interested in making things for kids when he started having children of his own. Thanks to his blessed events we were blessed with the delightfully zany entertainment of Spy Kids in 2001, about a brother and sister who join their parents in the family business of being international superspies. Rodriguez spruced up his tall tale with lots of color, pizzazz, and bold, broad strokes of family-friendly intrigue, plus all the outlandish gadgets that befit an inventive mind and technologically inspired spirit like the one that made him such a dynamic filmmaker to begin with. It didn't hurt that he had Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino on board as the spy parents, along with two wonderfully talented child stars (Alexa Vega and Darryl Sabara) as their pint-size secret agent progeny. After two sequels and 10 years, Rodriguez's reinvigorated resurrection of the franchise relies on a new family with oblique ties to the original (only Vega and Sabara return, as full-grown, full-fledged spies) and does a suitably energetic job of making zippy fun for the fourth-grade crowd. Others are certainly welcome to enjoy the excitement, so long as they have a special affinity for fart, poop, and vomit jokes mixed with bold, pop-art production design, kid-approved techno gadgets, and special effects that play up the slapstick nature of the original Spy Kids ethos. Jessica Alba is the spy mom this time, a job she's kept hidden from her TV journalist husband (Joel McHale) and step-kids Rebecca and Cecil Wilson (Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook). The secret doesn't last long, of course, and the two kids, along with her bubbly one-year-old daughter (who supplies most of the poop and vomit), join in the fight against the malevolent Tick Tock and his mysterious boss Time Keeper. These wacky villains can manipulate time and plan on creating some sort of apocalyptic meltdown based on their uniquely nasty ability. That's about the best description one can give; the plot is extremely convoluted, but it's pretty much superfluous anyway. The point of the show is to watch in delighted glee as the kids play with all the cool toys, the good grownups triumph, and the director makes juvenile poetry using slapdash digital effects and nonstop, gentle potty humor to amuse his core audience of enchanted children. Jeremy Piven has fun playing multiple roles and Ricky Gervais practically steals the movie (for the adults, at least) with his riffing banter giving voice to a robot dog in service of the spying Wilson family. Though it's a far cry from the original wit and offhand originality of his first Spy Kids adventure, this fourth installment is ample proof that Rodriguez is keeping up with what kids want in throwaway entertainment and has the technical skill to make the visuals pop off the screen to fill in any gaps of logic or boredom. --Ted Fry

Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) is the quintessential Wall Street shark, scoring killer deals by day and shallow escort sex by night. His round-the-clock routine of empty luxuries is disturbed one lonely Christmas Eve when a gun-packing punk (Don Cheadle)--perhaps an angel of mercy--responds to an altruistic gesture from Jack by giving him "a glimpse" of the life he could have had. Could have, that is, if he had married the girlfriend (Téa Leoni) he'd abandoned 13 years earlier, raised two adorable children, worked in his father-in-law's retail tire outlet, and lived happily ever after in suburban New Jersey. Thrust into this "glimpse" of the path not taken, Jack's a single-malt man in a lite-brew world, wondering if he'll ever return to his "better" life of callous wealth and solitude--or if he even wants to. Carp all you want about this derivative premise, with its marginal stereotypes and biased embrace of domestic bliss and dirty diapers. The simple fact is, The Family Man works like a charm. Under the assured direction of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), this holiday crowd-pleaser offers comedy and chemistry in equal measure, making the hilarity of Jack's predicament a smooth catalyst for that rarest of movie romances: the marital love story. Leoni is Cage's perfect match as Jack's idealized but imperfect wife, and the movie's appeal largely derives from its awareness that any life has its pleasures and pains. While it only flirts with the dark desperation that makes It's a Wonderful Life a classic predecessor, The Family Man is an irresistible what-if fantasy, and even its debatable ending rides on a wave of genuine warmth and sentiment. --Jeff Shannon

A surprisingly engaging story of puppy love and friendship in a teen setting, this film focuses on the title character (Corey Haim), who is nerdy but winningly outgoing. He falls madly for a new girl in town (Kerri Green); since school is out for the summer, he becomes her only friend--until she meets his hunky pal (Charlie Sheen). Meanwhile, Lucas ignores the romantic yearnings of another female pal (Winona Ryder, in her screen debut). Written and directed by David Seltzer, this one is a charmer with substance, featuring strong, open performances by its young cast. It's also fascinating to watch today, more than a decade later, and consider what became of these performers: while Ryder grew to be one of Hollywood's brightest lights, Haim descended into substance abuse, as did Sheen, whose predilection for call girls also made him a talk-show punch line. --Marshall Fine

A lesson in Egyptian history and some serious archaeological sleuthing are on the agenda in Scooby Doo: Where's My Mummy. Velma's sphinx restoration project quickly becomes a dangerous mission for Scooby Doo and the gang when a buried staircase leading to Cleopatra's tomb is unearthed and the curse of Cleopatra is resurrected. Faced with the fall of the River Nile, a desert on the rise, a newly awakened army of the dead, a ruthless treasure hunter and the threat of being instantly turned to stone, the gang sets off to explore Cleopatra's tomb. Things go awry when Velma gets turned into stone and Scooby and Shaggy get cut off from Fred and Daphne. In an odd turn of events, it's Shaggy and Scooby who persevere to solve the mysteries of the fallen river and the army of the dead. Problem is, if Cleopatra's curse is a hoax like the gang believes, why is Velma still solid stone? Bonus features include a National Geographic segment that offers some basic Egyptian history and information about King Tutankhamun's tomb, a "Mummy Rap" music video, a look at the celebrity voices behind the characters, deleted scenes, and an interactive "Escape from the Ankh Chamber" game. But beward the ancient pharaoh's curse: "The Nile will fall, the desert shall rise and all who dare enter will be turned to stone!" 2nd Chance (Women's Murder Club)

2nd Chance reconvenes the Women's Murder Club, four friends (a detective, a reporter, an assistant district attorney, and a medical examiner) who used their networking skills, feminine intuition, and professional wiles to solve a baffling series of murders in 1st to Die. This time, the murders of two African Americans, a little girl and an old woman, bear all the signs of a serial killer for Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to lieutenant of San Francisco's homicide squad. But there's an odd detail she finds even more disturbing: both victims were related to city cops. A symbol glimpsed at both murder scenes leads to a racist hate group, but the taunting killer strikes again and again, leaving deliberate clues and eluding the police ever more cleverly. In the meantime, each of the women has a personal stake at risk--and the killer knows who they are. 2nd Chance speeds along at a Formula One pace through many tight curves, but unlike recent entries in the Alex Cross series, it doesn't sacrifice good characters to a twisted plot. Lindsay's the star, but there's a fine esprit de corps among the four women, who are even better developed here than in the first book. What makes them both convincing and interesting as a criminal-justice juggernaut is their willingness to stick their necks out, even if they suffer for it. If you haven't picked up a James Patterson novel in a while, this is a great time to start anew. --Barrie Trinkle
A brutal madman sprays bullets into a crowd of children leaving a San Francisco church. Miraculously-or was it intentionally?-only one person dies. Then an elderly black woman is hung. Police homicide inspector Lindsay Boxer senses a connection and together with medical examiner Claire, assistant D. A. Jill, and Chronicle reporter Cindy, finds a link that sends a chill through the entire nation. This killer's motives are unspeakable.A Main Selection of The Literary Guild®, of Book-of-the-Month Club®, of Doubleday Book Club®, and of The Mystery Guild®

Here are some more information for Jeremy Piven:

Getting bored by a cable TV roster is nothing new. In fact, the new wave of satellite TV providers basically sprung up because the old system was inadequate and the old programming tired. If you look at the lineup of shows, original series, movies and sports coming into play these days via satellite, you'll see why there is so much buzz surrounding the service. Here are 5 hot items now playing.
1. Boardwalk Empire. It's a new HBO series starring Steve Buscemi about Prohibition Era gangsters in Atlantic City. The pilot is directed by Martin Scorsese. Could there be anything hotter to hit the screen in these times? The art direction looks exquisite and Buscemi is perfect for the role of a mob boss in the 1920's. If you think about it, there hasn't been a series on HBO recently that wasn't any good. With the type of names behind this one, you would be right to expect more of the same.
2. Couples Retreat. Vince Vaughn movies are always eagerly awaited by his loyal fans. Couples Retreat is another hit from Vaughn and Jon Favreau, the two behind Swingers and Made. In fact, Faizon Love from Made is also on board for this film, which follows four couples who head off to Hawaii in hopes of patching up the rough spots in their relationships. Jason Bateman's career continues in the right direction in this film. Check it out in HD whenever you want 'On Demand.'
3. Entourage. You might be wondering how this show can continue for so long but the answer is simple. When you have a lot of quality ideas and the writers to execute each episode, you are going to give the actors good material to work with. Entourage continues to bring in the guest stars while giving its ensemble cast a lot of great lines to deliver. Jeremy Piven might be the best thing about this terrific show.
4. The MLB Pennant Race. Few things are as fun to follow in sports as the race to the AL and NL pennants. This Year, the typical favorites seem to have their weaknesses, but the Phillies and Yankees could very well make it back to the playoffs. The teams that are really surprising everyone are the Padres and the Reds. Cincinnati and San Diego have a real shot at the NL pennant. Teams can find themselves only one clutch hit from the World Series at times. Whether the Rangers will get there is anybody's guess.
5. The Hurt Locker. It's modern warfare in the movies and it won Best Picture of 2009. The Hurt Locker needs little introduction. Its arrival on satellite TV movie networks is enough to get the buzz going in a big way. Of all the amazing things about the film, one piece of data stands out: Kathryn Bigleow is the first woman to have directed a Best Oscar winning film.
Check out the direct TV promos and see what would make you happy. Your direct TV dvr will allow you to call the shots when you turn on the TV.
