James Cameron's Dark Angel [VHS]
|
|
|
One of TV's more interesting tough-girl action shows, Dark Angel is a distinctive blend of the personal, the adventurous, and the politically aware. Cocreators James Cameron and Charles Eglee present a complex scenario of biological super-science and social collapse in which their gene-manipulated heroine and hacker-journalist hero can genuinely make a difference. In this first season they also provide an adversary who is a lot more than just a conventional villain. Jessica Alba is impressive as Max, bred and trained as a super-soldier but reclaiming her individual humanity; Michael Weatherly is scruffily attractive as Eyes Only, who sits semi-paralyzed in his eyrie above Seattle uncovering crime, corruption, and other skullduggeries and assigning deadly errands to the woman he hopelessly loves. Jon Savage has real authority as Lydeker, a man who has stretched his conscience to the breaking point, but is not personally corrupt. Some of the best episodes--"Prodigy," for example--are ones in which Lydeker and Max are forced into temporary alliance. Early on, the relationship between Max and the other workers at Jam Pony--the courier firm that provides her with a cover identity--is a little forced, but later on the two parts of Max's life are more successfully integrated: "Shorties in Love," for example, is a genuinely touching tale about Diamond, the doomed criminal ex-lover of Max's lesbian roommate. Dark Angel was never a perfect show, but at its occasional best it manages to be simultaneously funny and dramatic. --Roz Kaveney

Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; audio commentary on selected episodes; featurettes; outtakes; alternate scenes; bonus "Supernatural: The Anime Series" episodes. **22 episodes on 6 discs. 15 1/2 hrs.**
Season six of the fantasy-horror-drama series Supernatural continues its almost perverse streak of setting the bar at the end of each season so impossibly high that its successor could never surpass the roadblocks in its path, only to leap over them with the same amount of aplomb, wit, and complexity the program has shown throughout its network run. When audiences last saw the Winchester brothers at the end of season five, Dean (Jensen Ackles) had abandoned hunting demons in favor of family life, while Sam (Jared Padalecki) had apparently lost his battle with Lucifer in the season finale. But as season six reveals, Sam is alive and well, though missing a soul, which makes his subsequent hunts with a reluctant Dean merciless and focused on a plan not entirely understood by either man. As the brothers grapple with shape-shifting infants ("Two and a Half Men"), vampires (the unfortunately titled "Live Free or TwiHard"), leprechauns (Robert Picardo in "Clap Your Hands If You Believeâ¦"), horror icon H.P. Lovecraft ("Let It Bleed"), and a variety of homegrown monstrosities, they discover that Sam's soul is in the possession of the demon Crowley (Mark Sheppard), who is using it to manipulate Sam into locating the souls of Purgatory, which could turn the tide of a civil war raging in Heaven towards Crowley and renegade angel Castiel (Misha Collins). The Winchesters must then stop the infernal duo's scheme before an even greater apocalypse can occur. With such high stakes and grim fates hanging in the balance, it's a wonder that Supernatural can spare a moment for its trademark quirky humor, but such episodes as "The French Mistake," where the brothers arrive in an alternate reality where they assume the identity of Ackles and Padalecki, or the aforementioned "Two and a Half Men," display the producers' knack for combining the lighthearted with the show's trademark depth and darkness. Most impressively, the season sets up Supernatural for a seventh go-round that promises--yet again--to top its predecessors. Extras are again substantive and plentiful, with "Jensen Ackles: A Director's Journey" focusing on the actor's debut as helmer on "Weekend at Bobby's," perhaps the most interesting of the lot, with plenty of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with cast and crew. Somewhat weightier in tone and content is "Soul Chasers: Supernatural and the Quest for the Soul," which explores the concept of the soul from religious and philosophical perspectives. Writers and executive producers Sara Gamble, Ben Edlund, and Bob Singer are featured on commentary tracks for "Clap Your Hands" and "The French Mistake," while the latter is covered in collections of alternate takes and outtakes and a stand-alone blooper reel. Two episodes of Warner Bros. Japan's Supernatural: The Anime series, both featuring Padalecki and Ackles as the voices of Sam and Dean, bring the set to a satisfying conclusion. --Paul Gaita

All 22 episodes from season five--including "Sympathy for the Devil," "Fallen Idols," "The Real Ghostbusters," "Hammer of the Gods," and "Swan Song"--are featured in a six-disc set. 15 1/4 hrs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; audio commentary; featurettes; deleted scene; gag reel. **22 episodes on 6 discs. 15 1/4 hrs.**
How's this for a story arc: the Gates of Hell are opened, unleashing both Lucifer himself and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and bringing to an end civilization as we know it. That's what awaits fans of Supernatural in its fifth and most epic season to date. The stumbles in plot or character that are typical to most long-running series are largely missing from this season (though some might consider the stunt casting of Paris Hilton as a pagan goddess in "Hammer of the Gods" as such); instead, there's a solid, complex, and entirely satisfying run of episodes, and even a pair of series highlights in "Changing Channels" and "The Real Ghostbusters." The former finds heroes Sam and Dean (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) trapped in a TV-influenced netherworld populated by perverse small-screen archetypes, while the latter is a clever bit of meta-fiction involving a real ghost at a Supernatural fan convention, complete with Winchester brothers look-alikes. The other 20 episodes bounce between stand-alone adventures and the larger story at hand, which finds the brothers racing to collect the rings of the Four Horsemen, which will return Lucifer to his prison. This is fantasy storytelling for television at its best--broad in scope and heavy with special effects, but never forgetting that the core of the show is the relationship between Sam and Dean and their joint quest to rid the world of evil. Both are well represented here in a season that brings the show's main story line to its fitting and satisfying conclusion. Fans should also be pleased with most of the extras on the six-disc set for Season 5. The most ambitious feature is the Apocalypse Survival Guide, hosted by Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver). Presented as a tour through Bobby's house, the guide gives viewers a detailed lowdown on the major players in the war against Satan, including the Horsemen, various demons, and the Man in Red himself. Navigating one's way through the interactive videos can be a challenge, as the layout requires viewers to constantly restart the disc in order to review certain videos, but for sheer informational content, it's hard to beat. Also present is a commentary track by series creator Eric Kripke (who left the series at the end of this season) and writer Ben Edlund on "The End," which required such elaborate sets that the show earned its own back lot; said location also gets a once-over, as does an unaired scene from "The Real Ghostbusters." Best of all is perhaps the entire web series Ghostfacers, which pokes much-needed fun at the reality show Ghost Hunters in addition to providing some minor scares. --Paul Gaita

Here are some more information for Jensen Ackles:

When it comes to horror themed or related shows,it's been awhile for the WB."Angel" ended last year, and of course they lost "Buffy" to UPN years ago. Then there was the high hopes they had for "Dark Shadows", an update of the old vampire television show.Unfortunately, things fell apart faster than a paper bridge, and the show never saw the light of day,and was eventually scrapped altogether. This fall, they will try their hand at a new supernatural/horror themed television series aptly titled "SUPERNATURAL".The series stars "House of Wax" and "Cry Wolf" star Jared Paledicki and "Smallville"'s Jensen Ackles who play as brothers who road trip around the country in their '69 Chevy Impala, carrying on their missing father's quest to seek and destroy the evil supernatural forces responsible for their mother's slaying twenty years ago.
Director David Nutter, and filmmakers McG and Eric Kripke who was behind the awful (atleast in my opinion) "Boogeyman" are the brains behind the series.
The WB hasn't had many horror/supernatural themed series but the three that they have had ranged from pretty good to good."Buffy" started on the WB and was an awesome show with a huge following,as well as "Angel" which while not as popular as "Buffy" was, still had a very solid core audience and lastly "Charmed" which I personally dug in it's very early days but we all know the total disgrace it has broken down into now.The premise for the series is quite an interesting one, with alot of potential. But the question with this show is,can Paledecki and Ackles perform well enough to attain and keep the viewers attention for an entire hour?
I for one am not a fan of "Smallville" at all, so I can't speak on Ackles acting ability since I don't watch the show, but Paledecki came off as sort of annoying and unenthused in "House of Wax".But oddly enough, that kind of attitude might work for this show since he is after all playing a kid with a missing dad and a dead mom who always has to be on guard from the evils of the supernatural realm. Not much room for jollies and smiles in the life of someone like that.and I've yet to see "Cry Wolf" which opens in September,so he might have done better in that film.
Personally,I would've casted two much more well known actors in both roles, but the WB seemingly is doing the in house thing with this series by casting within the ranks of actors who have already solidified themselves on current WB dramas."Supernatural" out of the three horror/SCI-FI shows which will premier this fall, the other two being ABC's "Invasion" and "Nightstalker" has the most potential, which means chances are,it won't live up to even half of it.But theres reason to have faith, since the WB has managed to put together some great horror/drama/thriller series in the past.Hopefully "SUPERNATURAL" will be another one to add to the list. It's currently locked into the Tuesday night slot at 9/8 central this September.

I wonder which one of the boys jensen ackles and jared padalecki, plays the boy role in their gay love affair?
I choose jared, because he has more of the gay feminine voice and has the long hair, and jensen has the short hair and the very loud deep voice, and he's playing as the boy in their very gay love affair. they are dating.
Jared definitely.
