"It's an ugly world," warns brooding undercover cop Jason Patric to his naive rookie partner Jennifer Jason Leigh. "You get ugly with it." First-time director Lili Fini Zanuck brings both accomplished style and three-days-without-a-shower grit to this tough adaptation of Kim Wozencraft's book, the real-life story of two undercover narcotics agents who succumb to the rush of the drugs and the danger while building a case in rural Texas in 1974. This isn't an action film, but a harrowing, tense drama in which sudden death hangs over every drug deal and the so-called rules no longer exist. Patric and Leigh give riveting performances as the compromised cops trying to survive the self-destructive spiral into addiction, and Gregg Allman is memorable in an almost wordless performance as a shady bar owner. Eric Clapton's bluesy score and a soundtrack of well-chosen roadhouse tunes perfectly set the time and the tone. --Sean Axmaker

Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake of J. Lee Thompson's 1962 thriller dabbles a bit in some fascinating psychological crosscurrents between its characters, but it finally trades in all that rich material for extensive and gratuitous violence. Robert De Niro plays a serial rapist released from prison after 14 years. Angry because his appalled attorney (Nick Nolte) made it easy for him to be convicted, this monster is out to hurt Nolte's character through his wife (Jessica Lange) and daughter (Juliette Lewis). The themes of interlocking guilt and anger between these people suggests a smart film in the making. But the final act, set on a boat with De Niro's vengeful pervert attacking Nolte and the two women, takes a more unfortunate direction. Stick with the original (which starred Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, each of whom make a cameo appearance in this film). --Tom Keogh

Well-made for the genre--the excessive-skin-displayed-before-gruesome-bloody-torture-begins genre--Hostel follows two randy Americans (Jay Hernandez, Friday Night Lights, and Derek Richardson, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd) and an even randier Icelander (Eythor Gudjonsson) as they trek to Slovakia, where they're told beautiful girls will have sex with anyone with an American accent. Unfortunately, the girls will also sell young Americans to a company that offers victims to anyone who will pay to torture and murder. To his credit, writer/director Eli Roth (Cabin Fever) takes his time setting things up, laying a realistic foundation that makes the inevitable spilling of much blood all the more gruesome. The sardonic joke, of course, is that Americans are worth the most in this brothel of blood because everyone else in the world wants to take revenge upon them. This dark humor and political subtext help set Hostel above its more brainless sadistic compatriots, like House of Wax or The Devil's Rejects. In general, though, there's something lacking; horror used to suggest some threat to the spirit--today's horror can conceive of nothing more troubling than torturing the flesh. For aficionados, Hostel features a nice cameo by Takashi Miike, director of bloody Japanese flicks like Audition and Ichi the Killer. --Bret Fetzer

After winning consecutive best director Oscars (for A Letter to Three Wives and All About Eve), Joseph Mankiewicz turned his attention to this extremely curious social comedy. Cary Grant plays a famous, idealistic gynecologist whose mysterious past is questioned by a vindictive colleague (Hume Cronyn). Meanwhile, the doctor falls for a pregnant patient (Jeanne Crain), whose unmarried status is daring for a movie of 1951 vintage. The title is an all-too-apt description of Mankiewicz's chatty style, but it also carries sinister echoes of the McCarthy era--specifically, an attempted right-wing purge of the Director's Guild, I which Mankiewicz was the main target. This subtext lends interest beyond the movie's rather tame romance. The Grant character, named Doctor Praetorius (no relation to the Bride of Frankenstein wacko, one hopes), conducts a college orchestra and is prone to "twilight sadness"--it's an offbeat role for the actor, and one he clearly relishes. --Robert Horton

Oh, the innocent days when the sexiest thing on television was Barbara Eden's hidden navel! In the classic 1960s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie, an astronaut stranded on a desert island discovered a bottle containing a genie--a shapely blond genie in scarves and diaphanous pantaloons! He sets her free, but she follows him back to Cocoa Beach, Florida, where her efforts to serve him only cause mischief and threaten his career in the space program. I Dream of Jeannie depicted the male fantasy of a beautiful but subservient girl--but this subservient girl was all-powerful and oddly willful in her attempts to serve. It all worked because of the leads: Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman went on to lengthy careers (later starring in Harper Valley PTA and Dallas, respectively), but arguably never matched the chemistry they had as Jeannie and Captain (soon to be Major) Tony Nelson. Jeannie, though naive and eager to please, always had Eden's intelligence and steely resolve lurking under her bubbly blonde surface, while Hagman projected a genuine decency that somehow made the potentially salacious situation seem innocent. Still, the show would never have been more than a knockoff of the similar Bewitched (basically, the battle of the sexes with a magic twist) if Tony's secret hadn't been discovered midseason by his best friend, fellow astronaut Roger (the wonderful Bill Daily, later on The Bob Newhart Show). Unburdened by the need for decency, Roger could be the show's insatiable id, eager to use Jeannie for no end of self-serving purposes. Meanwhile, psychiatrist Dr. Bellows (Hayden Rorke) served as the show's perpetually flabbergasted superego, constantly demanding a rational explanation for all the madcap events around him. All at once the show's storylines--which had previously been dominated by Jeannie's desire for marriage--could wander in any daffy direction the writers chose. The result was deeply silly and utterly charming. I Dream of Jeannie's first season was shot in black and white, so The Complete First Season is available in its original form or colorized (which, though skin tones seem a little waxy, is relatively inoffensive). Also included is a short feature with enjoyable interviews with Eden, Hagman, and Daily, as well as the show's creator, Sidney Sheldon. --Bret Fetzer

Baby Knowles?
Beyonce’s father, Mathew Knowles will be heading to court for a paternity suit that was filed against him. He was accused of having an 18-month affair with Alexsandra Wright who claims that her newborn baby Nixon is his. Mathew has not paid child support nor has he taken a DNA test. His lawyer told the press, “We are not aware of the birth of a child†and he was confident that this is simply a rumor. I’m sure we’ll find out soon.
Phillips Family Crisis
Chyna Phillips has checked herself into a rehab facility and is undergoing therapy for anxiety. It has just been a few months since her sister Mackenzie Phillips told the public she was raped by her father John Phillips of the Mamas & Papas. The two were often high on drugs and when she was 19, on the night before her wedding, John had his way with Mackenzie while she was in a drug stupor. Apparently this was the beginning of an incestuous affair that would go on for ten years. Chyna supported Mackenzie her but their mother and ex-stepmother do not believe that Papa John did such a thing. This situation coupled with the fact that Wilson Phillips is not making any money right now could be huge stressors for Chyna. I don’t think a financial struggle is in her future since she’s married to William Baldwin. Mackenzie supports her sister and told In Touch Weekly, "I love my sister so much. She was there for me, and I am here for her...She is so very strong and funny. She is going to be just fine, I know it."
Mr. And Mrs. Leonardo DiCaprio?
Not yet. Leonardo and his girlfriend Bar Rafaeli were spotted at the Berlin Film Festival where Bar was rocking a new diamond ring on her left hand. A German newspaper claimed that Leo got down on one knee in the hotel to propose to Bar on Valentine’s Day. Rumors spread that the two were engaged but a source close to Leo told the press that the couple is not planning to tie the knot any time soon. Leo’s mom has supposedly been pleading for him to propose to Bar who is ready for a commitment. The couple split last summer because Leo wasn’t ready to settle down. It looks like mom and girlfriend are not getting their wish just yet.
Kristen Stewart a Prostitute?
It looks like Stewart put her girlish charm on the backburner to play the role of a prostitute in the film Welcome to the Rileys. The movie also stars James Gandolfini, a.k.a. Tony Soprano, and is currently showing at the Berlin Film Festival. It is slated for release to U.S. theaters this fall. The film was shot in 2008 before the Twilight Saga hit the big screen. Director Jake Scott told the press how lucky he feels that he had the chance to grab Stewart before she became as famous as she is now. Stewart is a prostitute who is rescued by Gandolfini and his wife. The couple was grieving from the loss of their own daughter and find peace when they are able to help the young woman.

The film Valentine’s Day was a box office sensation over the long weekend grossing $67 million from Friday through Monday night. It made a whopping $21 million on V-Day alone! Warner Brothers was so excited over the film’s success that they hopped right on the bandwagon to make their next hopeful smash holiday film, New Year’s Eve.
Britney Spears and boyfriend Jason Trawick didn’t have a Valentine’s Day as glamorous as Leo and Bar. They opted for McDonald’s! The couple was seen together at a Mickey-D’s drive-through and Britney seemed to be content with the french fries she was eating in the car. Hopefully they had a chance to go on an actual date the night before!
