Here are some more information for Ian Brennan: Michael Brennan considers himself fitter than most people his age. Now in his mid fifties, Brennan, a resident of Toronto, has been competing in cardiovascular events for the past 31 years. He credits his endurance training as the reason for his youth-like abilities. "It has kept me energetic and youthful. It has kept my cardio high and enabled me to participate at a competitive level in marathon running and triathlons (57 marathons, 2 Ironmans) and at a high performance level in ice hockey, cross-country skiing (skate skiing), cycling and swimming". There are more and more mature athletes competing in cardiovascular events these days. Of the 1,000 people who will be competing at this years Toronto Island Triathlon, about 10% will be mature athletes over the age of 50, says John Salt, founder and President of MultiSport Canada Event Management that will host the triathlon August 14 and 15th, 2010. The ever increasing number of mature athletes is welcome news to world renowned researcher Dr. Roy Shephard, of the Faculty of Physical Education and Health at the University of Toronto. "The involvement of older people is certainly increasing from year to year", says Dr. Shephard. Research conducted by Dr. Shephard and others, shows what Michael Brennan and other older triathletes have experienced themselves; that the three events of the triathlon (cycling, running and swimming) act as a fountain of youth in mature people who participate in them. Dr. Shephard's study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, shows that fitness gains are possible in people 64 to 83 years old. The best response were those that used high intensity with long periods of training. For the high intensity group, upper gains of 25% maximum aerobic power was possible, or the equivalent of having a maximum aerobic power of someone 12 years younger. The study involved methods such as cycling to test the fitness level of the subjects. A second study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, tracked older runners over a 20 year period. The results showed they were half as likely as similar aged non-runners to die early deaths. The study conducted by Dr. James Fries, of Stanford University School of Medicine, also found that the runner's initial disability from aging had an onset that was 16 years later than non-runners. A third study published in the International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education, examined medical data from 40,000 men over a 32 year period. From that data those that swam for fitness were compared to those who did not swim for fitness. Results showed that swimming cuts men's risk of dying by about 50%. The study was conducted by Dr. Steven Blair of the University of South Carolina. Why are the three events of the triathlon (cycling, running, and swimming) so special, and why do they act like the fountain of youth? "The main point about cycling, running and swimming is that they are endurance sports, which are probably the most effective in terms of enhancing an individual's maximal oxygen intake," explains Dr. Shephard. "Up to an hour of activity at perhaps up to 75% of maximal effort", would achieve the results shown in his study. Participating in a full triathlon may be too long and intense for some, but luckily there is an event called Give-It-A-Tri, which is a shortened version of a triathlon. The average finishing time of Give-It-A-Tri events are about an hour, which is within reach to most mature athletes, and exactly the amount of time suggested by Dr. Shephard to achieve the age defying results shown in his study. John Salt, in his mid fifties himself, says there is no reason why a mature person could not try this event. "If someone is in reasonably good shape, can swim 400 meters, bike 10 kilometers, and run 2.5 kilometers, they can participate in a Give-It-A-Tri event. For someone who has not been active and is over 50, I would suggest they talk with their doctor." There were many mature athletes at last year's Toronto Island Give-It-A-Tri. Among them were Boleslaw Szramek, from Mississauga, who competed in the 60-64 age group and finished with a time of 41 minutes and 18 seconds. Ian Fyfe, from Toronto, competed in the same age group and finished at 51 minutes and 4 seconds. Ted Overton, from Toronto, competed in the 70-74 age group and finished with a time of one hour and 20 minutes. Michael Brennan has "been in the business of running" for 15 years as a running instructor/coach, race organizer, and race consultant. He suggests a training regimen for your first Give-It-A-Tri. The first part of training is to get "running fit", meaning run three times a week through the spring (to train for a summer event) to "let running build your endurance and cardio for cycling and swimming." Then, "get on a stationary bike or road or mountain bike once a week. Consider doing this on the various trails around the city or quiet streets - for safety, avoid busy streets. If 5K is easy the first time, add 5K to the next session...build to 20K if you have time and energy." Finally, "get into a pool once a week and do lengths (about 200m in total the first time or more if that's easy, 250m the second time, and add 50m each session)". Go for the plunge and give a Give-It-A-Tri a go yourself. It's the perfect way to get the intensity and duration for all three of the best endurance sports at the same time. You'll walk away from the training and the experience a new person, and in the findings of Dr. Shephard, you'll have the ability of a person who is 12 years younger!
