The last Nirvana collection recorded before the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, Unplugged caught many by surprise with its stripped down, neo-acoustic offerings with a bridled fury. When Cobain sings, "I swear I don't have a gun, I don't have a gun" with clenched teeth (instead of an open howl) and when the haunting strains of "About a Girl"--from their earliest LP--chills even with quieted guitars, you discover a new appreciation for the nuances of one of the greatest bands of recent times. Highlights include covers of three Meat Puppets tracks (featuring special guests Curt and Kris Kirkwood of that influential "college rock" band), the weepy cello on the Vaselines' "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam," and their cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." --Lorry Fleming

This 1997 beginning-level, interval-training workout alternates intervals of 3-1/2 minutes of aerobic exercise with 1-1/2 minutes of strength training, so your heart rate stays elevated for a total of 31 minutes. The aerobic segments are simple steps, repeated frequently. Some are high-impact (jumping and jogging), and although Austin has two assistants, neither demonstrates low-impact alternatives, which would have given beginning and overweight exercisers more options. The strength segments also could have been designed better. The first strength interval works the shoulder muscles, which are small (especially in women) and fatigue easily, so they are therefore usually worked later in a workout. Another exercise that Austin says targets the chest really doesn't, because it's done standing where gravity puts more of the load on the shoulders again. The shoulders get their third interval later on, so your shoulders are likely to be tired, while the larger muscles of your chest and back get minimal work. After the interval workout, Austin does eight minutes of standing leg exercises and abs, and finally a stretch. --Joan Price

The Hot Spot is best known to lecherous film buffs for Jennifer Connelly's topless scene, but this sultry southern noir deserves more than prurient interest. It's arguably Dennis Hopper's best directorial effort (OK, so that's not saying much), and Charles Williams's source novel Hell Hath No Fury finds Hopper in a comfortable B-movie milieu, riffing on Double Indemnity with an overripe tale of sex, greed, and blackmail in an unnamed Texan town. Fresh from the final season of Miami Vice, Don Johnson stars as a shifty drifter, conning his way into a salesman job on a used-car lot, where the boss's insatiable wife (Virginia Madsen) offers him sexual favors and a lovely secretary's (Connelly) innocence is threatened by a percolating scandal. Nobody's really innocent, of course, and Hopper spices this languid web of secrets with enough trashy misbehavior to qualify The Hot Spot as a bona fide guilty pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

Denise Austin: Hit the Spot--Abs gets right to the point with three sessions that target and tone the abdomen. Each 10-minute segment concentrates on the rectus abdominus (a major muscle of the abdominal wall) and the oblique muscles (that run along the side of the midsection). Whichever program you choose will deliver an equal challenge with only a minimal variation on choreography. Spine alignment is imperative here and Austin reminds participants about the importance of keeping the low back close to the floor. Reverse curls, crunches, and torso twists are taught with special attention to contracting the muscles that are used for each movement. Some modifications are offered for beginners or those who have back or neck weakness. While this program provides a great abdominal workout, the opposing muscles of the low back are not worked here. The low back helps aid in torso stabilization and the addition of these isolations would enhance the overall benefits of this great workout even more. Mats or towels are needed, and a small pillow may come in handy during certain exercises. These tried and true exercises are presented with that famous Denise Austin spunkiness that may leave you thinking that smiling and sit-ups can co-exist. --Olivia Voigts

Recorded over the course of two days at New York City's Avery Hall, this concert was held in honor of Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday. Along with material from such legendary Sondheim works as "West Side Story," "Sweeney Todd," "Company," and "Sunday in the Park with George," the program includes performances by Bernadette Peters, David Hyde Pierce, Elaine Stritch, Mandy Patinkin, Patti LuPone, and more. 116 min. Sondheim! The Birthday Concert is a historic tribute to the Broadway work of Stephen Sondheim that took place in New York's Avery Fisher Hall in March 2010. That's 25 years after a similar all-star concert, Follies in Concert, was held in the same venue, also with Paul Gemignani conducting the New York Philharmonic, and the song list and parade of stars seems intended to evoke those memories. But rather than re-creating one show, this concert hosted by David Hyde Pierce celebrates three decades of work in honor of the composer's 80th birthday. It starts a bit slowly, with some songs for which Sondheim wrote only the lyrics, but even that offers something "new": an unfamiliar song from Hot Spot (music by Mary Rodgers) called "Don't Laugh," performed by Victoria Clark. From there the concert shifts into high gear with Sondheim's shows from the '70s and '80s. Three songs from Follies are covered by a young generation of talent (Jenn Colella, Matt Cavenaugh, Bobby Steggert, Laura Osnes), by Audra McDonald and opera star Nathan Gunn, and by original cast member John McMartin. That's followed by some thrilling reunions: Joanna Gleason and Chip Zien's "It Takes Two" from Into the Woods, Jim Walton with a song he didn't sing in Merrily We Roll Along ("Growing Up"), Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters with "Finishing the Hat" and "Move On" from Sunday in the Park with George, and Patti LuPone with two different Sweeney Todds--George Hearn and Michael Cerveris. Six "ladies in red" sing solos--LuPone's "The Ladies Who Lunch," Marin Mazzie's "Losing My Mind," McDonald's "The Glamorous Life," Donna Murphy's "Could I Leave You," Peters's "Not a Day Goes By," and Elaine Stritch's "I'm Still Here"--before hundreds of currently working actors flood the theater and sing "Sunday" to emotionally overwhelm the guest of honor. Since none of the shows represented were written later than the '80s (Passion is not represented, though its two female leads are, nor is Assassins), it's safe to say that this combination of songs sung by so many original stars will never be repeated. --David Horiuchi
