Mulan [VHS] Mulan [VHS]
List Price: $22.99
Sale Price: $5.00

Solid entertainment from a new group of Disney animators. The story source is a Chinese fable about a young girl who disguises herself as a man to help her family and her country. When the Huns attack China, a call to arms goes out to every village, and Mulan's father, being the only man in the family, accepts the call. Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga) has just made a disastrous appearance at the Matchmaker and decides to challenge society's expectations (being a bride). She steals her father's conscription notice, cuts her hair, and impersonates a man to join the army. She goes to boot camp, learning to fit in with the other soldiers with some help from her sidekick, Mushu, a wise-cracking dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy). She trains, and soon faces the Huns eye-to-eye to protect her Emperor. The film is gorgeous to look at, with a superior blend of classic and computer-generated animation. Directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook make the best of it: a battle in the snowy mountains is as thrilling as the best Hollywood action films. The menacing Huns are not cute but simple and bad. The wickedness is subtle, not disturbing. The film is not a full-fledged musical, as it has only five songs (the best, "Be a Man," is sung during boot camp). Eddie Murphy is an inspired choice for the comic-relief dragon, but his lines are not as clever as Robin Williams's in Aladdin. These are minor quibbles, though. The story is strong, and Mulan goes right to the top of Disney animated heroines; she has the right stuff. --Doug Thomas

Mrs Doubtfire [VHS] Mrs Doubtfire [VHS]
List Price: $9.98
Sale Price: $2.95

This huge 1993 hit for Robin Williams and director Chris Columbus (Home Alone), based on a novel called Alias Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine, stars Williams as a loving but flaky father estranged from his frustrated wife (Sally Field). Devastated by a court order limiting his time with the children, Williams's character disguises himself as a warm, old British nanny who becomes the kids' best friend. As with Dustin Hoffman's performance in Tootsie, Williams's drag act--buried under layers of latex and padding--is the show, and everything and everyone else on screen serves his sometimes frantic role. Since that's the case, it's fortunate that Williams is Williams, and his performance is terribly funny at times and exceptionally believable in those scenes where his character misses his children. Playing Williams's brother, a professional makeup artist, Harvey Fierstein has a good support role in a bright sequence where he tries a number of feminine looks on Williams before settling on Mrs. Doubtfire's visage. --Tom Keogh

Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) is no ordinary father, so when he learns his ex-wife (Sally Field) needs a housekeeper, he applies for the job. With the perfect wig, a little makeup and a dress for all occasions, he becomes Mrs. Doubtfire, a devoted British nanny who is hired on the spot. Free to be the "woman" he never knew he could be, the disguised Daniel creates a whole new life with his entire family.

Independence Day [Blu-ray] Independence Day [Blu-ray]
List Price: $29.99
Sale Price: $8.57

In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh

Who will save the Earth after huge alien spacecraft demolish the Empire State Building, the White House, downtown Los Angeles and most of the world's major cities? How about brave pilot Will Smith, satellite specialist Jeff Goldblum and U.S. president Bill Pullman? The smash-hit mixture of sci-fi thrills and disaster movie dramatics also stars Randy Quaid and Robert Loggia. 147 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English DTS HD 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary; trivia; game; theatrical trailers; more.

Mulan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack Mulan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack
List Price: $12.98
Sale Price: $11.97

Lea Salonga, best known as the voice of Jasmine in Aladdin, steals the show here as the title character in Disney's Mulan. The former star of Miss Saigon adds touching elements to the feature, especially on introspective numbers such as "Reflection." Unfortunately, the voice of Donny Osmond, relegated to anthems such as "I'll Make a Man Out of You" doesn't really enhance the story line, a saga set in ancient China. Jerry Goldsmith provides the Far East tinge to the score, almost reminiscent of early Les Baxter. While Mulan is a far cry from the memorable Beauty and the Beast, it is both funny and charming. --Jason Verlinde

Hairspray (2002 Original Broadway Cast) Hairspray (2002 Original Broadway Cast)
List Price: $11.99
Sale Price: $6.29

The cast recording for the Broadway musical of John Waters's 1988 paean to dance, music, big beautiful women, and integration is a sheer delight. It's wonderfully upbeat all the way through, with a classic feel that's in keeping with the story's setting in the early 1960s. The characters come alive in these songs, from Marissa Jaret Winokur's (Tracy Turnblad) opening lines in "Good Morning Baltimore" to the stunningly upbeat finale, "You Can't Stop the Beat." The music is by Marc Shaiman, whose recent projects include South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, as well as a number of film soundtracks, and his compositions are simultaneously solid and exuberant. Shaiman and Scott Wittman's lyrics brim over with the unreserved passions and primary-color emotions that made the film so successful. Regardless of one's familiarity with the story or the stage production, it's hard to avoid the appeal of this recording; even the less cheerful songs are awash in bright colors, without disrespect for their subjects. --Genevieve Williams

Kull, played by Kevin Sorbo, wants to join an army where Taligaro, played by Thomas Ian Griffith, is the leader. However, Taligaro tells Kull that to join his army Kull must be or royal blood, even though Kull beats Taligaro in a duel. Taligaro gets a message from a soldier that the king has gone mad and started killing his own children. Taligaro and his army returns to the castle and Kull follows them. Taligaro confronts the king about his crime and the king threatens to kill Taligaro as well. Kull intervenes and fights the king, seriously wounding him. Taligaro tries to claim himself as the new king, but the king awakens and gives the crown to Kull naming him as the new king.

Kull, as king, try to change the laws which were currently in place by freeing slaves and allowing a temple priest named Ascalante, played by Litefoot to "worship what gods they will". Kull's new laws displeases Taligaro and him along with two other men visit a warlock who revives the red witch queen, Akivasha, played by Tia Carrere.

Kull befriends a fortuneteller, Zareta, played by Karina Lombard, who predicts that Kull will go on a quest and "the fate of his kingdom will be found within a kiss". Taligaro and Akivasha plot to destroy Kull by placing Akivasha as a maiden among many other women to be chosen as Kull's queen. Kull chooses Akivasha, of course, because she put a spell on Kull to choose her as his queen. On their wedding night, Akivasha poisons Kull, simulating death and blames Zareta for the crime of murder. Kull is only unconscious and is taken to Akivasha's castle as her prisoner. Kull escapes with the help of Ascalante and both of them rescues Zareta from execution. Zareta reunited with Ascalante, who is also her brother, joins Kull on his quest to the isle of ice.

Kull makes a visit with an old friend, Juba, played by Harvey Fierstein and asks Juba for a ship. Juba tries to double-cross Kull, however Kull outsmarts Juba, throws him overboard and continues his journey to the isle of ice. Akivasha sends Taligaro to follow Kull to the isle. Once there, Zareta takes in the breath of Valka, the ice god, in order to try to defeat the red witch queen, who is made of fire. Taligaro arrives and him and Kull have a duel in order to see who will take Zareta back with them. Taligaro wins and takes Zareta back to Akivasha, not as a prisoner, but to defeat Akivasha so he can be king.

Unfortunately, Ascalante is killed in battle and Kull escapes alone to follow Zareta and get her back. Once Kull arrives at the castle, a battle between him and Taligaro ensues and Taligaro is killed. Kull takes the breath of Valka from Zareta and kisses Akivasha, who is now a demon beast and is destroyed by the cold breath of Valka. Kull regains his kingdom, chooses Zareta as his queen and begins his own legacy as king.

FILM FACTS: Raffaella De Laurentis produced "Conan the Barbarian" and "Conan the Destroyer". Arnold Schwarzeneggar was suppose to play "Kull the Conqueror", but was unavailable. Robert E. Howard, the novelist, created "Conan" and "Kull". Kull in the novel by Howard is actually the father of "Conan". Kevin Sorbo was screen tested and picked for "Kull" 3 years prior to his acting on the hit series "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys".

Why You Should Catch a Catered Affair on Broadway!

A Catered Affair seems to be the musical on everyone's must-see list. A lot of people just want to see the amazing Faith Prince sink her teeth into another musical in her signature manner. Others are keen on watching a little story that's awfully big on heart. But the play has a lot of other things going for it too.

Enough Wedding Films!

Let's face it- Hollywood likes to churn out wedding flicks. Movies like My Big, Fat Greek Wedding and Father of the Bride have laughed all the way to the bank, cashing in on the foibles of putting a wedding together. So what makes a Catered Affair so different? While it's true that the play centers on a wedding, it's not about grumpy in-laws, wedding dress mishaps or cold feet. The play delves a little deeper and touches on the real tension and turmoil that happens to each character.

Unlike most wedding stories, this play gives us a handful of well-defined characters in a pretty simple situation. Jane Hurley is about to get married to her boyfriend Ralph. Jane seems to be opting for marriage more as an escape from her family. Apart from that, she certainly doesn't want a big wedding because she knows her folks can't afford one. So it should all just be a matter of heading down to City Hall and saying 'I do', right? Wrong.

Guilt And Regret

As the story of A Catered Affair unfolds, things rapidly become more complicated. Jane's mother begins to feel guilty since she has always made Jane live in the shadow of her now-deceased brother. Instead of letting her daughter get married at City Hall, she insists they have a big wedding with a lovely dress and all the fixings. But Jane's mother isn't the only one with issues. Jane's father has spent his whole life working hard as a cab driver. He now has enough money to buy his own taxi- unless, of course, he uses that money to pay for Jane's wedding.

As the big day closes in and tiny mishaps begin to snowball, each family member must confront his or her own feelings of guilt and regret. The play quietly but effectively explores the bonds that bind a family together- it shows how they can cause problems and also bring everyone together.

A Catered Affair doesn't boast of any high-level production numbers. Instead, the audience is treated to some real hummable, toe-tapping tunes that have memorable lyrics to boot. Unlike other shows, where each song has a very obvious introduction, the characters here almost imperceptibly break into a song. In the end, the show is a simple story that musically binds its rather complex characters together. An added plus-point of the current production is the fact that it has Tom Wopat, Faith Prince and Leslie Kritzer in the lead roles. Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book A Catered Affair, also has a role in the play. It's a show that you certainly don't want to miss. If you don't have the time to wait in line for tickets, you can always order them online. But make sure that you are dealing with an authorized ticket vendor first.

‘Perfect’ timing brings Harvey Fierstein to Gwinnett
LAWRENCEVILLE — Harvey Fierstein will be in Atlanta next week performing the lead role in the musical “Fiddler on the Roof.” Before the musical’s Atlanta engagement concludes, the Broadway legend will be seated in the audience at the Aurora Theatre for a matinee showing of the Tony Award-nominated musical “A Catered Affair,” for which he penned the book.
