Inspired by real events, the fascinating The Great Debaters reveals one of the seeds of the Civil Rights Movement in its story of Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington in a captivating performance) and his champion 1935 debate club from the all-African-American Wiley College in Texas. Tolson, a Wiley professor, labor organizer, modernist poet, and much else, runs a rigorous debate program at the school, selecting four students as his team in '35, among them the future founder of the Congress of Racial Equality, James Farmer Jr. (Denzel Whitaker). Washington, who directed The Great Debaters from a script by Robert Eisele (The Dale Earnhardt Story), anchors the story with the team's measurable progress, but the film is also about the state of race relations in America at the height of the Great Depression. With lynchings of black men and women a common form of entertainment and black subjugation for many rural whites, the idea of talented and highly intelligent African-American young people learning to think on their feet during debates would seem almost a hopeless endeavor. But that's not the way Tolson sees it, as his students serve themselves and the cause of racial equality in America with energetic arguments in favor of progressive government and non-violence as a viable social movement. There are some startling moments in this movie, particularly the sight of a man found lynched and burned to death, and an extraordinary moment in which we see black sharecroppers and white farmers engaged with Tolson in arguments about unionizing together. Forest Whitaker is outstanding as Farmer's emotionally-reserved father, also a Wiley professor. This is the kind of film where one hopes two great actors such as the elder Whitaker and Washington will have a scene together, and when it comes it's as powerful as one might hope. --Tom Keogh

The career-focused Clarice has a mini-showdown with her well intentioned mother: "In all your lessons about how to be strong, you left out some very important things," Clarice cries to her mother (Jenifer Lewis), who snaps, "What?" "How to love, Mama!" The film, based on the novel by the best-selling author T.D. Jakes, embraces spirituality, but never preaches (a combination that would be welcome in more films about relationships and family), and the decisions of its characters are always believable--sometimes heartbreakingly so. Like Schoolhouse Rock, Marlo Thomas's 1970s children's TV show, Free to Be… You and Me met with immediate success and became a treasured piece of entertainment over the years. Based on her award-winning album of songs, skits, and comedy, Free to Be explores the infinite possibilities of childhood. Fans know most of the skits in the 45-minute show verbatim, and it's easy to see why right from the beginning with an infectious title track followed by a puppet sketch featuring Thomas and Mel Brooks as newborns. Top talent appears on both sides of the camera, including Alan Alda who directs and performs a cartoon about a boy who wants a doll. However, the presentation does show its age at times: a teenage Michael Jackson singing (with Roberta Flack) on how he's not going to change when he grows up. For all ages. --Doug Thomas

Compress a season's worth of MTV's The Real World into 90 minutes, marry it to a Girls Gone Wild video, and basically you've got The Real Cancun, an ambitious if unwieldy effort to extract a feature film from bawdy footage of a spring break spent in sunny Mexico. Created by The Real World's production team, Cancun tosses 16 attractive college kids into an unrestrained, endless party in paradise, where the waves are majestic, the booze flows freely, and wanton sex--despite free-form nudity and ample opportunity--proves a surprisingly elusive dream. The trouble here is that a lot of spaghetti was thrown at the wall, but none of it sticks: There are too many people, not enough time to develop compelling individual stories or relationship cycles, and an unwillingness among most of the cast to make a leap from relaxed licentiousness to uncensored lust.
