Broadway's Lost Treasures delivers what the title promises: 21 historic performances of great moments in American musical theater televised on the Tony Awards between 1967 and 1986. (Five were not included when the program was broadcast on PBS in 2003.) Unlike some other arts, theater has rarely been well-documented, so it's a treat to see these numbers performed by the original artists rather than experience them through audio recordings or tepid movie adaptations. Sure, sound and picture quality are only adequate, some of the numbers are minimally staged and some appear to be lip-synched, and some of the performances that do have excellent film counterparts (Yul Brynner in The King and I, Robert Preston in The Music Man, Joel Grey in Cabaret) seem rather lackluster here. But those are minor drawbacks compared to the chance to see Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera perform "All That Jazz" and "Nowadays" from Chicago, or John Raitt, a stage legend who's woefully underrepresented on film, singing The Pajama Game's "Hey There." The most electrifying excerpt is from Evita, anchored by the powerhouse trio of Patti LuPone, Mandy Patinkin, and Bob Gunton, the most surprising is Julie Andrews singing "Send in the Clowns" (she wasn't in the cast of A Little Night Music), and the most touching is a 12-year-old Andrea McArdle breaking hearts in Annie's "Tomorrow." An indispensable record of a quintessential American art form. --David Horiuchi

America's pastime gets a Faustian twist in this 1958 studio musical, which recounts the ballpark bargain struck by an aging Washington Senators fan obsessed with helping his team trump the Yanks. With echoes of the real-life 1919 Shoeless Joe Jackson scandal, and tart observations on the tradeoffs between youth and experience, Damn Yankees fuses a classic dramatic dilemma with musical comedy to often charming effect. In transferring George Abbott's Broadway hit to the screen, codirectors Abbott and Stanley Donen are smart enough to retain Richard Adler and Jerry Ross's clever songs, Bob Fosse's sizzling choreography (with Fosse himself on camera for the sultry mambo number), and stars Ray Walston and Gwen Verdon, reprising their devilish turns as the Horned One himself, Mr. Applegate, and his temptress, Lola. Where the team strikes out, unfortunately, is in their concession to marquee politics, handing the pivotal role of Joe Hardy to handsome, vapid, celluloid heartthrob Tab Hunter, whose thin voice and unsteady screen presence argue that he should have stayed in the dugout. Walston is reliably spry and acerbic as the canny archangel, and Verdon, in one of her rare starring screen turns, confirms the comedic timing and sexy, muscular grace that made her a deserved draw in subsequent stage hits including another Fosse triumph, Sweet Charity. With her combination of feline grace and alternately steely, flirtatious femininity, Verdon makes you believe her when she sings, "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets." --Sam Sutherland

An offbeat and charming comedy with elements of science fiction thrown in, director Ron Howard's (Ransom, Apollo 13) unlikely fantasy ponders the price of immortality and the power of everlasting love. A group of aliens travel to a Florida retirement community to rescue some long-stranded colleagues cocooned and buried beneath the sea. But as the aliens take on human form and stash their counterparts in a swimming pool, a group of elderly retirees discover the pool and after swimming in the water find themselves rejuvenated, with boundless energy and insatiable appetites. Soon the retirees are forced to choose between living out their lives on earth with their families, or leaving with the aliens and attaining immortality. More character driven than dependent on the incredible plot, the film's charm comes from its characters and the wonderful cast, including Don Ameche, who won an Academy Award for his role as one of the randy retirees. --Robert Lane

Ron Howard directed this heartwarming fantasy that brings together a senior citizens' home in Florida, a swimming pool that doubles as a "fountain of youth," and some returning visitors from beyond the stars. Steve Guttenberg, Tahnee Welch, Brian Dennehy, Wilford Brimley, and Academy Award-winner Don Ameche star in this life-affirming fable. 117 min. Standard and Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 4.1, Spanish Dolby Digital Surround, French Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English, Spanish; theatrical trailers; audio commentary by Howard; featurettes; TV spots; theatrical trailers.

Winner of an Oscar for Cabaret, a Tony for Pippin’, and an Emmy for Liza with a `Z’—all in one year, 1972—Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was one of America’s greatest choreographers and directors. Born in Chicago, young Fosse began his career tap-dancing as part of the Riff Brothers in sleazy strip joints, where he encountered the erotic style that later became his signature. Best known for his Broadway hits (The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, Sweet Charity, and Chicago), he was also a successful movie director. Three of his five films were nominated for Academy Awards: Cabaret, Lenny, and the autobiographical All That Jazz. A compulsive womanizer, he had many affairs, even during his three marriages, the last of which was to actress Gwen Verdon, with whom he shared his most fruitful Broadway collaborations. As his fame grew, so too did his insecurities and addictions. He survived two heart attacks and several epileptic seizures, only to die on a street corner in Washington, D.C., in Verdon’s arms. After his death Fosse became a Broadway legend. Based on interviews with friends, family, and colleagues, this eloquent biography provides a vivid connection between Bob Fosse’s life and his work for stage and screen.

The Velveteen Rabbit The Velveteen Rabbit
List Price: $5.99

A stuffed toy rabbit (with real thread whiskers) comes to life in Margery Williams's timeless tale of the transformative power of love. Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'" This sentimental classic--perfect for any child who's ever thought that maybe, just maybe, his or her toys have feelings--has been charming children since its first publication in 1922. (A great read-aloud for all ages, but children ages 8 and up can read it on their own.)

A little boy's love for his stuffed rabbit magically brings the beloved toy to life, in an enchanting story about the power of love. Read by Gwen Verdon.

Here are some more information for Gwen Verdon:
Gwen Verdon

When it comes to name dropping, Martha Lanzillotti can keep up with the best of them. That's because the New York City licensed tour guide was an actress in her first career, and true stories about her early experiences dovetail nicely with what a tourist wants to hear when visiting America's entertainment capital.

As operator of her own business, called Explore New York, she is one of New York City's 1,300 licensed tour guides. She typically joins travel groups after they arrive in New York; on other occasions, she is a private guide for travelers who want customized sightseeing plans.

Before becoming a guide in 1992, Lanzillotti was a singer-actress with the stage name Martha Danielle (the latter is her middle name). She was in a few Broadway shows in the 1960s and 1970s (once sharing a dressing room with Glenn Close before that became a marquee name), traveled for months at a time with road shows, appeared in advertising (she is a former Tupperware girl and a former Lotto girl) and, for 13 years, performed in the "very lucrative" industrial theater. In that world, she sometimes shared the bill with the likes of Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon and other high-powered entertainers.

Corporations that sponsored industrial events used familiar shows and music to convey their own messages and sell products, and Lanzillotti's assignments could range from a car show in Detroit (she once did one of those dressed in car upholstery fabrics) to fashion week in New York. For the latter, she recalls staying at the Waldorf-Astoria and vocalizing early in the morning with her face in a towel to keep from disturbing her neighbors.

Then, from 1987 to 1992, Lanzillotti worked on cruise ships, mostly Ocean Cruise Lines, doubling as an entertainer and hostess, summering in Scandinavia and wintering in South America.

She said these experiences were great background for a tour guide, particularly for someone in New York City, America's "theater central," because she can name drop to her clients' content and she is once again on stage reading her audience.

Guides, after all, are "not just books on legs," she said. "Information is very important, but it's also about your personality and about being spontaneous."

Her first by-the-book obligation is to provide what was promised in printed itineraries or prepare custom itineraries to the travelers' specifications. Beyond that, however, she said she sees a chance to be creative with each client or group. She offers options for add-ons or alternatives, depending on customer interest or other circumstances, but the customers decide, she added.

Part of her job, too, is helping out-of-town coach drivers navigate the city, do drop-offs where permissible and locate parking. The drivers can be quite nervous, "literally with shaking hands," she said.

A New Yorker from birth, Lanzillotti was thrilled to study (using the recommended Michelin guidebook) for her 1992 licensing test because she learned a great deal about her home town and took herself all over the city for a month.

On the job, Lanzillotti always carries source material, and her current best companions are the New York City Blue Guide and the "Time Out" magazine; she also has relied on her Michelin and sometimes the New York Times Week in Review.

But, she is constantly updating and customizing her material.

For example, she said, for teens, she needs to know things like where certain basketball courts (seen in the movies) are located.

Or, she has to be ready to talk about "the most obscure things" when a coach is stuck in traffic. That's why Lanzillotti knows that the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, an Anglo-Catholic church in the theater district, is the first church in the world to be built on a steel frame. Who knew?

Some anecdotes don't require special circumstances. Lanzillotti sometimes discusses the rocks New York is built on. The Bronx is on rock called gneiss, pronounced "nice," and Manhattan sits on schist granite, so she says she tells her tourists, "The Bronx is nice and Manhattan is full of schist, and I pronounced that very carefully."

Martha Lanzillotti is a member of the local Guides Association of New York City, and she is a member of and listed with NYC & Co. She can be reached at exploreny1@aol.com. The author, Nadine Godwin, is editor at large for Travel Weekly, the nationÂ’s largest travel trade newspaper.

Rationale Behind Today’s Most Popular Songs

It’s been playing crazy on the radios. Everyone’s talking about it. Downloads are soaring high up the charts. CDs are running out of stock. Names have been emerging here and there. Such things are the effect of releasing a hit song.

Before popular songs became mass favorites, do we know anything about the concepts behind these singles?

Here are some songs that reached the peak of the charts and the background that took part of their success.

Everyone is dazzled (or at least, aware) of the iconic song “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” by superstar Beyonce. The theme of the song emphasizes women empowerment through its catchy hook and chorus. However, it was the video that actually made the whole song a worldwide craze, which was inspired by a 1969 performance of Gwen Verdon in a hit TV show. Beyonce stated that she saw the video of the performance and would like to incorporate its elements on her own video.

Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” also has its back story. According to Taylor, the concept of the song came from a guy pal who’s talking on the phone with his girlfriend which ends in quite a messy argument. Thus, the first few lines of the song emphasize the scenario. Consequently, the whole crush thing just came to life. Basically, it tells having a crush with someone who’s committed to another, who in turn doesn’t even like him/her for who he/she is.

Lady GaGa’s “Paparazzi” doesn’t really tackle much about the media stuff. According to GaGa, it’s a song about choosing between love and fame, and how this concept catches hordes of paparazzo. The chorus of the song is actually ironic because GaGa inserts that she’s a big fan of a paparazzi, which in reality is possibly the other way around.

These songs prove that popular songs are made, not born.
