For most people born in the mid-late 1970s to the early-mid 1980s, their childhood included the rise of video games as a dominant form of entertainment. One of the most popular genres during this period of time was Adventure Games. These are games where the player assumes the role of the main character in a story that generally involves a quest of some sort. The player is required to perform various actions and make use of several items that they carry around in their "inventory".

In order to be successful, the player must use problem solving skills to advance throughout the game. It was and still is a great way to promote outside the box thinking while at the same time creating a fun experience. The success of the genre spawned many games attempting to take advantage of the growing popularity, but one of the front-runners for consistently producing quality games with high entertainment value was LucasArts. #10: The Dig -- you control Commander Boston Low who is stranded on an Alien planet in this sci-fi adventure game.

#09: Loom -- play as Bobbin in this fantasy adventure where you must use musical related puzzles to advance in your quest.

#08: Full Throttle -- you control Ben, a biker in a futuristic utopian society.

#07: Grim Fandango -- the first LucasArts adventure game to use 3D graphics, this game focuses on Manny Calavera and takes place in the Land of the Dead.

#06: The Curse of Monkey Island -- play as Guybrush Threepweed, a self-proclaimed pirate trying to rescue his lost love in this third installment in the Monkey Island franchise.

#05: Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis -- this game takes the beloved film character Indiana Jones and sends him on another adventure looking for the lost city of Atlantis.

#04: Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge -- the second game in the Monkey Island series has the player once again controlling Guybrush Threepwood on another rescue mission.

#03: Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle -- using elements of time travel, the player is able to play as several different characters while trying to save the world from a mutant tentacle.

#02: Sam & Max Hit The Road -- play as Sam (a dog), one half of a quirky detective team assigned to solve a case that takes him and his partner Max (a rabbit) across the country.

#01: The Secret of Monkey Island -- the first appearance of Guybrush Threepwood is a classic that has spawned four sequels and is the game that really pushed the success of LucasArts adventure games to a whole new level.

One of the most appealing aspects of LucasArts adventure games is that the player can never "lose" and is able to progress throughout the game as long as they can figure out what they have to do next. This prevents them from making a mistake and having to start their game all over again from the beginning. LucasArts adventure games are also filled with a great deal of humor to go along with the story to make the experience that much more enjoyable. The Nintendo DS' intuitive stylus controls make it seem like a perfect platform for the revival of the classic adventure genre. Gamers who grew up on these sorts of point-and-click adventure titles – beloved games like Monkey Island, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango – would love the chance to take a nostalgia-laced trip through these classics once again in handheld form, but are they willing to accept a few technical and narrative concessions in the process?

Tetraedge Games sure hopes so, as they've just released a port of Microids' critically successful 2002 PC adventure title Syberia  on the Nintendo DS. Unfortunately, a lot of changes were made to the game's core gameplay and narrative in the process, ultimately making the DS translation the worst iteration thus far. Point-and-click aficionados will enjoy the game's unique world and intriguing story, but there's no denying that Syberia is clearly meant for the PC.

The game opens with Kate Walker, Syberia's main protagonist and the character players control throughout the adventure, standing in the rain as a procession of mechanical automatons passes through the gates of a small nearby church. She has come to the small European town of Valadilene to secure the sale of a small toy company for her employer. This seemingly simple assignment becomes much more complex when Kate discovers Anna Voralberg, owner of the Voralberg Toy Company, has passed away and the only way to complete the sale is to locate the missing heir.

You have to commend Tetraedge for their effort in porting Syberia to the Nintendo DS. The very fact that they somehow managed to shrink a complex narrative and an intriguing, beautiful world onto a handheld in the first place is an impressive feat. Unfortunately, the qualities that made Syberia the critical success that it was six years ago didn't make the transition fully intact.

The game's narrative and puzzles have been abridged, the DS specific controls are sloppy at best and the graphical degradation hurts what was one of the PC version's strongest selling points. Syberia is a gaming experience that really shouldn't be missed, just make sure you're playing on the PC where the game truly belongs.
